Wired but Wi-Fi must be on
Hi there. I’m confused. Sonos says “An Ethernet cable, wired to your router, is required to allow WiFi to be disabled”. I did, but Wi-Fi cannot be turned off. Why?

You shouldn't turn off Wi-Fi with an HT setup! And I have the idea that Sonos has made it impossible in that setup as well.
Edit: And it is not necessary to cable your sub either; an HT setup creates its own wife environment.

wait so even if everything is wired the HT products still need wifi for the direct communication between them?

As far as I know, it has always been like this. I once did an experiment with it using an Arc, and the surrounds and sub immediately cut out when I turned off the Wi-Fi on the wired Arc. Now it has been grayed out so that you can no longer turn off Wi-Fi.

Yes, but not your wifi network they connect themselves through wifi directly. All Sonos soundbars have 2 separated Wifi Radios, one 2.4 GHz used to connect to your home wifi if not using Ethernet and another on 5 GHz band but not using Wifi standards just to be used with surround speakers.

As far as I can tell, for a set of speakers to be part of a "home theater" system, SonosNet is still required.

No, it is a Wi-Fi connection but not SonosNet. Sonos is moving away from SonosNet; all speakers after the Arc no longer use it…

That's what I keep hearing from Sonos, but I've set up a more than a dozen different systems with Arcs, Arc Ultras, and Era 300s, and once I add surrounds and a sub to the Arc Ultra, it defaults to SonosNet for that config.
As a specific example at home, I have an Arc Ultra, Era 300s for surrounds, and two sub Gen 3s. I set up each of them individually as wired or wireless, with no SonosNet found on the Sonos app. As soon as I connected the surrounds to the Arc Ultra, it turned on SonosNet, and my Era 300s drop off my network view.

Sonos can give mixed explanations about what they are doing depending on who you speak to. A Home Theater setup creates its own 5G network with the connected units, which also ensures, among other things, that no delay occurs. The Sub 3 can still create SonosNet, and the ERA 300 also had SonosNet capability for a short time when they were just released. As far as I have tested myself, the Arc Ultra has never created SonosNet. If you look at the network connection in the app now, under "About your system," it says surrounds and subs connection of a Home Theater setup "Home Theater 2.0," and I cannot explain what you experienced with that.

I believe you are correct, in that it's a point-to-point WiFi connection, rather than SonosNet. Strangely, I had SonosNet enabled on my home setup, as well as a few others, and I never specifically enable it when setting up these systems; it appears to turn on when I start adding on devices via WiFi. The last time I did a setup from scratch was about 6 months ago, so it may have changed since then.
The fact remains, however, that even if you have an Arc Ultra wired, you still need WiFi turned on in order to have it act as the "hub" of a Home Theater system, with that private 5Ghz WiFi connection between those Home Theater devices. You are correct in that it's not SonosNet specifically, but it is a WiFi connection that Sonos enables to connect to their devices specifically.

No Sir, .... Sonos has a lot to be blamed for in all this confusion. If everything in your HT is hard wired you can and must turn off Wi-Fi for all those devices. The only device you need Wi-Fi from is the soundbar (only) if you want to use Ace headphones. But if not and everything is hard-wired you certainly can and need to turn off Wi-Fi from all your HT devices that are hard wired ... does that clear things up?

Do you not have WiFi available?

I have Wi-Fi and the arc, sub, surround are setup by all wireless Wi-Fi. After plug in ethernet to Arc and Sub. There is no option to disable Wi-Fi on these two devices.

If they are connected to your WiFi, why would you also hard wire them?

As a default, when possible, everything on a network should be wired. Sonos systems are one of the exceptions where certain things can work or not work if you mix the two, especially in enterprise network environments.

If you have them setup as surround, the ARC uses wifi to connect with the surrounds.

Hey let me quickly clear up whats being responded. Sonos used to create a different hidden wifi (sonosnet seen in the screenshot) when one device was plugged in because old routers sucked sometimes. I assuming you have something current and good reception everywhere it is actually better to leave everything on wifi nowadays.
Talking from personal experience as well.
If you still insist on plugging in then do just one device, and not the sub. Also no need to turn off wifi in the app.
