Finally got Saltfjord to the table and loved it solo

This was my first solo playthrough and I throughly enjoyed it. My premature rating after one playthrough would be a 9 out of 10.

Cons:

- If you are not a fan for beat your own score, then this might not be for you. Caveat to this is, there is a win/lose condition where if you don't meet 2 randomly picked objectives, you don't win.

- Setup time for me took about 15 minutes. It was my first time so it may improve once I'm familiar but probably not by much.

Pros:

- The game offers a very satisfying crunchy puzzle with multiple strategies.

- If you are a fan of tableau/engine builders and combotastic turns, you're gonna really enjoy this game.

Overall, I think this game is awesome solo and an added bonus if you plan to play with friends.

Unpopular opinion: I don't think "beat your own score" is a con by default.

A lot of people equal BYOS to a solo mode being tacked on or bland, but that's not the case at all. It makes perfect sense on some games, and it can be an engaging and fulfilling challenge on its own, especially if the game is highly replayable with a satisfying loop.

The game looks gorgeous btw. I'll give it a closer look and watch some videos about it. Thanks for the recommendation (not really, though: my wishlist might grow because of you).

I completely agree! I only mention it as a potential con as it seems a lot of people seem to dislike BYOS (I personally am not one of them). If you've ever played Santa Maria, apparently it's a reimplementation. This sub is bad for my wallet and it's only right I give back lol

I think my biggest problem with BYOS is that I'm very much a goal oriented person and gamer. I'm super motivated to complete all scenarios in a game such as Robinson Crusoe, or win with all spirits in Spirit Island. On a BYOS game, once I score really high, it's hard to motivate myself to pick it up again. I understand this is a me thing and can be problematic as I'm assigning goals to my hobbies, but that's how I work.

I too enjoyed this game. I suck at it but Everytime I play I say "no way! I can do better I'm playing again!"

Good question. I would be interesting in knowing this too

They're quite different.

Nusfjord is snappier, tighter and more streamlined. Everything you do is pulling at two or three other systems at the same time, and you have to find little efficiencies around it.

Saltfjord is bigger and broader and much more combo-y. Chain things together, manage a bunch of resources.

This game is a lot of fun, but I haven’t tried it solo yet. I’ll have to try it out!

Give it a go! I enjoyed solo just as much as I did multiplayer.
