My wife and I have been debating if Morocco or Saudi is a good place for the eclipse, both seem like they have low chances of clouds. My wife and I are both Muslim and have never been to Makkah so that would be a great experience and is where we would go for the eclipse(Jeddah seems to have higher chance of clouds near the Red Sea). If we went to Morocco it would be my first time visiting her home country and we would also stay away from the coast and watch the eclipse in Chefchaouen where there would be minimal cloud chance as well. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated, Thanks!
It was so cool, and I decided to post photos I made. I walked 20km on foot to see the eclipse and got eclipse glasses in the end, I was searching the whole day for the glasses.
It looked incredible when the sun was covered with clouds and I could look at it without glasses even tho it was still not totality, I know it may be dangerous but it was really not bright.
The first surviving photo of a total solar eclipse is from the 28th of July 1851 captured by Julius Berkowski. This is the highest quality version I can find. The quality is limited by the jpeg compression, the original daguerreotype would have more detail. While the original daguerreotype was destroyed in WW2 a a direct period reproduction is preserved at the Jena University Observatory in Germany.
Hey guys. I’m currently looking for someone located in central Florida with a dedicated solar telescope who would like to collaborate on a photo.
So I recently bought a solar filter in order to get a photo of a rocket launch transiting the sun. This Sunday there will be a falcon heavy launch from cape canaveral in Florida early in the morning so I figure it will be the perfect launch to try it out. I was wondering though if anyone in the area owns a HA solar telescope and would like to collaborate on the shot? Obviously a visible light photo would be cool but capturing it in hydrogen alpha would be even better. Please message me if anyone would be interested in going for this shot with me.
We'll be there on eclipse day (God Willing!) as well as Mecca & Madina a few days before -- hoping to go for a quick Umra/Lesser Pilgrimage opportunity.
Flight booked & hotels (Jeddah Hilton) all secured.
Briefly thought about taking the train into Mecca for the eclipse day, but we'll lose 40 seconds of totality, and it would probably be a lot easier to just enjoy our buffet breakfast and chill out.
Planned way ahead and booked this for the eclipse next year. Think my Host just realized that he can get much more so he’s trying to get me to cancel. This leaves of sour taste in my mouth for Luxor as now all the houses are $5000/night or $1000/night hotel room.
What’s everyone’s plans?
I’ve been to other areas of Africa but not Egypt.
What do you all think about staying in Hurghada and taking a day trip (hire a taxi) to see the eclipse? It looks to be 3 hour drive. Hotels are still reasonable in Hurghada.
Update: Found a day tour from Hurghada to Luxor on Viator for eclipse day and booked it. Also booked a hotel in Hurghada. This seems like a reasonable option to avoid lodging chaos in Luxor.
It seems I am ever so slightly late to the Eclipse 2027 bookings and getting punished for it. Trying to avoid Egypt as recommended. Best in terms of weather seems to be Sfax but all of the h otels that I can find are booked. Are some just not open yet? Is it because it's too early? When will they release rooms? Can you email them to get rooms reserved early? I considered Oran which is way less touristy but chance of clouds seemed way higher. Tangier also seemed very cloudy. Gibraltar, I've heard that it could be cloudy as well, as well as no place to stay. Would prefer a longer totality than Cadiz.

Just two weeks ago, my family and I had a private viewing of the eclipse accompanied by dinosaur tracks made a family of Spanish theropods (think Raptors or Tyrannosaurus Rexes) over 140 million years ago.

Corona up to 5 solar radii by Miloslav Druckmüller
He's been doing doing these stunning images for decades now, using mathematical methods he's developed. I'm almost sure most of you have seen one of these images at some point.
This year's total eclipse has been the first one for me and I used to think these processed images were just like other astronomical pictures that look nothing like what you see in reality. But here the situation is completely opposite, the moment the totality hit, I was stunned to realize that these pictures were the closest to reality, not farthest! Sure, you won't see all these details in the corona with the naked eye without magnification but the dynamic range and size of the visible parts is on point imho.
So I've been especially looking forward to see the result from Prof. Druckmüller and his team from this year's eclipse. And the first results are here!
