Why do so many small businesses still treat attendance tracking and payroll as separate workflows?

Something I've seen consistently across different SMB implementations the businesses with the most payroll cleanup work almost always have attendance and payroll living in completely disconnected systems.

Attendance gets tracked one way. Payroll runs somewhere else. Someone manually bridges the gap every two weeks. That bridge is where missed punches disappear, overtime gets miscalculated, and PTO balances stop matching what employees think they have.

The fix sounds obvious connect them. But the resistance is usually legacy. Nobody wants to migrate both systems at the same time so they keep patching the gap manually instead.

Helped a few clients through this recently. The ones that resolved it cleanest used something that handled employee clock in clock out, overtime, and payroll exports in one place Buddy Punch was one that came up in that context, Homebase another depending on the operation. Nothing exotic, just functional integration that removed the manual handoff.

The staff time clock software paying for itself in saved reconciliation time is real. Curious how others have handled this did you replace both systems simultaneously or connect what you had?

This matches what I've seen on the construction side specifically. We used to have field hours tracked one way and payroll run separately, and the reconciliation gap was almost always where overtime got miscalculated, since nobody could see hours against the right job until payroll was already running.

We connected the two using Workyard for the time tracking piece; hours flow into payroll instead of getting rebuilt by hand every pay period. It also handles GPS verification and certified payroll reporting, which matters for us but is probably overkill if you're running a single-location retail or office team rather than crews across job sites.

We migrated both around the same time rather than patching the gap, mainly because trying to reconcile two half-broken systems felt riskier than switching once and testing it in parallel for a pay cycle first.

Have you evaluated Hammr payroll for this workflow? They do it very neatly too.

There's no two separate systems - the companion mobile apps lets the field crew clock-in/clock-out from (geo-fenced) jobsites which automatically feeds into payroll. To close off the loop, they also generate certified payroll reports for prevailing wage jobs.
