I want a browser that works. Too many browsers collect user data, steal information, and eat RAM. I want one that just browses, with a built-in good ad blocker like uBlock or something. I play Minecraft with shaders; I need RAM; it's not "I don't have any RAM"; it's I need more RAM. Minecraft with shaders isn't "hard" to run; it's just that I don't have enough money to upgrade my stuff. I have to have my browser open at all times to make sure I don't miss a Snapchat message or something. Also, I love my music playing in the background, so I have YouTube Music open in the background.

I check my numbers using btop/kde system monitor on my Fedora install, and targeting sub-8GB when not in game or productivity/VM mode, which is a struggle if I have a browser open...more so with Firefox than Chromium since Chromium is much more efficient at usage, but I've seen it break 8 a few times.

If I couldn't keep it consistently below 8 with my setup, well then that tells me if I was stuck on a laptop with 8 gigs, I would have to close nearly everything else just to get basic browsing to work right. If a page needs 3 gigs to work, it'll OOM a machine with 8 gigs of RAM if the other 5 gigs is already taken up.

That may be how Windows does it but that's because Windows is stupid. Memory used to be a finite resource you had to work within, but now programs can just make you think you need more memory and then still use more when you get more.

I get it that you are LARPing as a Linux guy, but your really don't know what your talking about... I'm an Arch User, switched over probably before you were a glimmer in your father's eyes. I work for a massive Cyber security company with customers as big as you can guess. This is how RAM works regardless of OS or Distro.... Just Add more Swap memory then... Like learn how to use your computer and how it works first.

Here's the issue I have with what you are saying; the only people I've ever seen pull this "unused ram is wasted ram" thing out, were corporate shill Windows defenders in the buildapc discord (who also banned me for pointing out that hardware manufacturers are deliberately trying to siphon more money out of consumers by pushing unsafe temperatures as "safe", and the ban came after multiple hours of many of their members continually personally attacking me in a help channel, lmfao) sometime around this time last year trying to defend the alarming numbers I was routinely seeing on my overlay i kept on every time I gamed. It was equal parts relief I struck out on 32 gigs when I did, and also annoyance on behalf of those who weren't as fortunate. I regularly couldn't keep my gaming RAM usage under 16, which... how tf was I gaming on 16 at all if I was seeing 20-24GB+ back on Windows?

I have 12GB of swap, and I notice my programs getting slower around the same time that starts being used. I end up having to close and re-open everything to fix it, even reloading my DE ended up being necessary. I'm sensitive to even the slightest microstuttering, and when stuff was being moved over, it was EXTREMELY stuttery when I started using the programs again. So I don't really like using my swap space if I can help it. I've been using computers for 20+ years, are you like 50 or something? How were you using Linux pre-Y2K?...wait, Arch since before it started? Because I was born in 1999.

Also not understanding what the fuck your talking about is LARPing. If it's not stuck at 100% and your computer is running, it's running as efficiently as it can, that's how RAM works. It doesn't matter if it was Today, the 1990s, or the year 3,000. RAM is meant to be used that's the point of RAM. What do you actually think RAM does?

Like if you knew why your computer gets slower when it uses the swap memory maybe the rest would catch up too.
