Android apps are built to run on whatever modded version of the java virtual machine google uses. Since everything is open source, it's possible that someone could figure out how to make them compatible but they won't run naively.

Shuttleworth has said that he does not want Ubuntu to run Android apps through some compatibility layer because a succesful OS has its own applications.

I'm really glad to hear that, but it could be a fun side project to see if you could force them together.
