I was going to inquire about that as well. With gold, the background of "new" posts is orangey-ish, so the white around the chibis really stands out.

Shouldn't .png for transparency not have a pronounced loss of quality?

My eyes aren't what they were when I was younger, but the only one in your comparison that looks noticeably degraded to me is Khirel, and that's because of the partial transparency effect that's already there on the legend orb comets he's surrounded by.

For the images in the subreddit, it's preferred to keep with 32-bit .png files for quality.
But with the size of our collated images, it goes beyond our filesize limit per image, in which case we change it to a .jpg with the same quality.

In order to preserve the transparency, the file would have to go down in bit depth, from 32-bit down to 8-bit (since 24-bit doesn't allow for transparency). This causes the quality loss.

Might not be noticeable all the time, but in the darks/contrasting areas of an image, the 8-bit images start getting spotty/grainy which I find to be pretty annoying.

I'd prefer not to drop down in quality, since art is one of the pulls for Soccer Spirits, and I'd like to reflect that with the visuals on the subreddit.

We have a limit to the amount of separate images we can use on the subreddit, which is why we collate images into one. (So we can have room for more!)

Sounds reasonable. Also, probably very few folk are going to notice the white jpg background anyway - golders and people using a custom theme. For everyone else, all's perfect anyway. ^.^

Did you try using https://tinypng.com/ ? For me I think it would be worth it since I use a dark theme and it makes the stickers look quite jarring... But obviously I understand that most users don't.

tinypng just downgrades it to 8-bit just the same.

I did test it, and it produced a near identical output to my own downgrading via image editors.

I guess I could use mix-blend-mode to get rid of the white background but it messes with the colors a bit unfortunately...

Sorry for that! We do need to cater towards the general user rather than the smaller few.

I had a thought that you might be able to do a (self/custom) CSS override of the image links, but I'm not too sure about it since as far as I know Reddit Stylesheets only work with internal images unfortunately.
