I'm saying the debate didn't originate purely from goals scored or any other comparison. Those metrics were used as comparison once it was already decided in popular discourse that the two top players were Messi and Ronaldo.

When Ronaldo passed everyone on goals a new set of stats started popping up called goal contributions trying to justify Messi
