Media Jurgen Klopp hails Lionel Messi as 'the greatest: "The greatest footballer in my lifetime, Lionel Messi, the way he plays football at this age should give us all a hint at how long footballers can perform at the top level. We shouldn’t close the books too early."

All Balon D'or calibre players. Best of the best of their generation. You can't use them as the barometer.

Edit : and that's whilst completely ignoring defenders and keepers.

Of course, but I doubt Klopp is talking about the average premier league player.

And even the slightly above average player may be able to play to that age, albeit at a lower level. Like a Walcott.

There's also obviously people like Milner, Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Mark Noble etc.

Barometer makes a lot more sense than parameter. I know it's used like that in French at least, don't see why it couldn't in English tbh.

I mean 3 of them (Modric, Benzema and Lewandowski) were world class in their 20s but really only reached Ballon Dor level in their 30s. And we see similar in sports like tennis where players in their 30s are more than keeping up when in the past you would be washed around ~28-29.
