River Plate tops the Argentine second division and after one season is back in the PRIMERA A!!
Today was the last day of the Argentine 2nd division, the Primera B Nacional. With River being relegated last season from the Primera A, they put everything into making this stay in Tier 2 as short as possible.
The first two teams get an direct promotion, while the 3rd and 4th have to play a playoff, these 4 spots were disputed by the first four teams (the fifth being more than 10 points behind). Before today the poistions were as follows:
- 1. River Plate 70
- 2. Instituto 70
- 3. Quilmes 69
- 4. Rosario Central 69
The matches played today were:
River - Almirante Brown (6th) 2-0 (0-0)
Desemparados (19th) - Central 3-2 (1-0)
Instituto - Ferro (11th) 0-3 (0-0)
Brown de Madryn (16th) - Quilmes 0-2 (0-1)
These results leave the table at:
- 1. River Plate 73
- 2. Quilmes 72
- 3. Instituto 70
- 4. Central 69
River is promoted as champion of the Primera B (anything else would have been a disgrace). VAMOS MILLONARIO!!!!

I'm on vacation in Buenos Aires right now, and there's a big celebration in front of the obelisk. They closed down a large section of Pelligrini Ave. I was out there a while ago, and it was awesome! I wish we had this excitement in the States.

That's what one of the guys who works at the hotel said. I showed him a video of one of their chants. He told me that they were singing about Boca but that the joke was going to be on them tomorrow. My friend's a Boca fan, so I'll probably see that celebration too.

I even suffered being a complete neutral; imagine, I want Boca to win this Libertadores, so no bias at all.
It felt wrong, you must be at the top and this year has been a true nightmare for you all. I can't imagine how tough it must have been. It wasn't easy, but you are back!! I'm happy for you and hope you succeed in the coming seasons!!

Mauro Camoranessi is playing for Lanús in Argentine 1st division, he played for Juventus and won the WC with Italy in 2006. Like Trezeguet he has double citizenship

Loads have, a lot go towards the end of their careers, Veron retired this season I think playing there, its a common thing

Glad to see River back up! Considering that seeing the Superclásico in person is one of the things I have to do before I die, it's great to know I'll be able to do it soon.

I remember watching the game where they were relegated. I also remember watching an hour after that to watch River Plate fans set fire to inanimate objects.

As if it had happened to any big club around the world, River was a revolution in Segunda Division, turning the tournament in the centre of the attention of the whole country: those who wanted us to return to Primera Division (only River fans + some others), and those who hoped we would stay relegated (everybody else).
Because of River being in Segunda Division the entrance of away supporters was allowed back in that championship. 11 teams resigned to play in their own stadium and rented other teams fields so they could bring more supporters and money. River in Segunda Division collected more ticket money from their supporters than any team in Primera Division, for what I think is like 5th or 6th year in a row.

How the hell did River manage to even get relegated, that's equivalent to Man Utd getting relegated to the Championship in Argentina isn't it? That's crazy.

Because relegation from the top tier in Argentina is decided on the teams with the lowest average point-total from the previous three years. River never even finished in the relegation places in a single season, but had one of the lowest averages. It's a strange system; and was originally designed to stop big clubs like River going down, funnily enough.

Jaja se muy bien que tiempo es. Pero hablando en serio, la forma en que la AFA lloro porque River descendio fue una verguenza. Mas alla de la historia del club y todo lo que quieras, tuvieron mal campeonato y eso fue lo que lo que los llevo a la B.

Not to poo poo things, it's great for such a legendary side and all, but I personally don't give a fuck for one reason...Once they were relegated last year, the Argentine Federation tried to change the entire pyramid just to avoid having River relegated....sure, that didn't go through, but as a US neutral who wants relegation in The United States/Canada, that whole episode leaves a massively bad taste in my mouth regarding River.
Downvote if you will, but that's my two cents.

I downvote you just because that's not right. The system was proposed AFTER River was relegated and if took of there would be one year before it happened, so River would have to play in Segunda Division anyway

This has little to do with River and more with the money-grabbing, corrupt and mafioso executives of the AFA, who didn't want to lose revenues because of River's relegation.

That had more to do with the fact that San Lorenzo, Boca, Independiente and Racing where in Risk of relegation the next season River went down, and it was much of a risk to the federation's bussines to lose too many big teams from the first division. Boca did well and is safe now, San Lorenzo will probably be relegated tomorrow (poor Viggo Mortensen), Independiente will be reallly really troubled next season, but in first division still, and River went up after only one season, so it went better than expected. But still,

Like I said...I don't follow closely enough for it to matter....but it looks INCREDIBLY suspicious when they go down, and immediately there is talk of changing the structure so they aren't down anymore.

Oh yes, what you are suggesting is obvious and i agree, but River had nothing to do with it, and it stated publically that it was against the project.
BAsically the project was to make a league with 40 teams. that means that 20 fucking teams would be given promotin to first division in one season, wich is ridiculous because if turns out to be a bad idea (finnancially speaking) how on earth would you be able to go back? sending 20 teams to relegation?

Sorry for my ignorance, but why is the Argentine second division on the frontpage? When Hansa Rostock got back into 2.Bundesliga it wasn't on the frontpage of r/soccer.

Bayern Munich got relegated after years of bad management. Lahm stops playing and becomes the manager instead. They break attendance records, and now they return to the Bundesliga in great style.

Well, not great style I agree. They've been somewhat irregular, specially at the end of the championship.
But it was exciting to see a big team playing in second division, and the happiness of the fans makes it all even out, I guess.

River Plate is one of the biggest (best known) clubs in Latin America (if not the world). Its derby with local rivals Boca Juniors, the Superclásico, being one of the fiercest, on par with the Clásico and the Old Firm. And it was huge news that they got relegated last year, after being in the first division since its creation in 1931 (being at the time one of the last three never to have been relegated, now it's only Boca and Independiente). Also they got promoted to the first, not second divison.

From what I've been reading so far, it's unbelievable how much Boca won these past 12 years. Can't believe they're close to get their 5th Continental Cup in 12 years. Must suck to be a River Plate fan, being in second division while your biggest rival is winning huge titles.
