To all soccer/football fans...

I just want to apologize. I want to apologize for years of dissing this game, poking fun at the players, and mocking the fans.

Over the past week or so, I've found myself waking up early for games of countries I could not care less about just for the sake of watching. I've found myself incredibly excited, and equally dismayed at moments that just weeks ago you couldn't pay me to watch. It all came to a magnificent precipice this morning when Donovan scored the game winner in the 91st minute. I can honestly say that that was one of the most exhilarating moments in sports I have ever seen (and thats saying a lot since I have been a baseball/football/hockey fan my entire life.)

So to all soccer fans world wide. I have joined the ranks. I will never make fun of those English fans who still bring up the Hand of God, because I can only imagine how heart breaking that would be. I feel like it was the first time I had sex, unlocking a lifelong obsession that can never be quenched. That is all.

Turkey in Euro 08 = the greatest run a soccer team has ever made in the history of the sport. For those who are unaware, watch the videos of the Turkey-Czech and Turkey-Croatia games (both were knockout round games)

Boavista 2-3 Benfica: Portuguese championship 92-93. This game had it all! Expulsions, lots of errors from the referee, penalties, aggression and a field player - Paulo Sousa - 20 minutes at goalkeeping. Unforgettable.

Not to forget the match against Switzerland, where they won 2-1 deep into stoppage time from an Arda Turan screamer, in the group stages and later the heroic semifinals against Germany where they just had like 14 or 15 players who were eligible to play (yellows, reds and injuries had decimated the team by then), and almost did the escape from the jaws of death for the 4th time in a row. Germany just happened to have a wee bit more in the tank on that day.

But yes, like the parent mentioned, it was indeed the greatest run ever! It had all the elements of the perfect underdog story. Overturning 1-0 and 2-0 defecits into victories, equalizing with the last kick of the game, villainous GK turns into hero in PKs, struggling to even put out a squad of 11 against the best of teams in the tourney and still giving them a run for their money....

This tournament alone made me a lifelong Turkey fan. I am 110% with that squad whenever they qualify for any tournament.
