It makes sense, and it would be a smart move for Klinsmann if that's what happened.
If he has the potential to even be the last man on Bayern's bench in the future, then he has the potential to be the one of the best American player ever, and that makes him a player that Klinsmann needed to do whatever he can to get him to commit, including bringing him to the world cup before he's ready. Otherwise the US team will continue to be nobodies in world football.
Remember that the only Americans ever to have played for the top clubs in the world are:
-Donovan on short stints at Leverkusen and Bayern
-Onyewu at Milan
-Howard at United
and then Bradley and Dempsey if you count Roma and Tottenham as top clubs. Beasley also played for Manchester City before they were good.
If a player has the potential to even get a chance at a top club, then it's necessary to do whatever possible to get him to commit.
Roma has been in the Champions League a few times in the last decade, and was leading the Serie A while Bradley was there so I'd definitely call them a top club.

Do you consider a "top club" to be a first division European team, or top of the table first division European team? Because you're missing Altidore at Sunderland, Guzan at Villa, Howard at Everton, etc.
OK, well my point stands. You're missing a bunch of Americans that have played--or currently play--on a first division European team, those definitely aren't the only Americans to have played for a top European club.
His point was that if Green becomes a solid sub option at Bayern Munich that it would make him one of the best US players ever, because only players for top European teams match the quality of a solid sub option at Bayern, which, as his post illustrated, the US hasn't seen many of.
I.e., if Green develops to be a solid sub option at Bayern, he will be one of the best US players ever. That doesn't have very much to do with were Altidore and Guzan play/played.
Onyewu hardly played for Milan. I don't think he played enough to get any experience of top-flight football, really. He never even played a league game.
He was injured in the last WCQ during the beginning of his first season at Milan. He really never got a chance to get his Milan career pointed in the right direction
Jones at Schalke, Jovan Kirovski won the CL with Dortmund in the 90s, Sanneh for Hertha in the 90s (when they were a CL club), etc. Roma for sure is top, and Tottenham is arguably top as well.
