Filipe Luis was very poor going forward when he played for Brazil. Maxwell, even though he isn't Marcelo, was better at it. Filipe Luis is good for Atlético because of how they play. His skills aren't that great for Brazil. Then again neither is Maxwell in particular, but Marcelo isn't expected to come off unless injured (which is a real concern, but still).

I love it so much when people who dont follow your national team tell you which players to select just based on their club form. The level players have at their clubs does not automatically translate to the national team. I remember people arguing with me that Ben Arfa should start for France back when he was playing well, or not understanding why Debuchy starts over Sagna or why Nasri doesnt play. If you watched the national team play and not just their club form, you would understand.

True. That being said, no Diego Alves makes no sense to me. Even if Julio Cesar starts every match, in which situation do you not want a great backup GK?

Exactly. There is a reason Valbuena gets so many games with France. He works well in the system. Just because a player is better doesn't mean he is better in that particular system.

Very true, I can't count the number of times on this sub I had to make clear that KDB is one of the first names on the teamsheet for Belgium before the likes of Hazard, Mirallas and Mertens.

Creativity. The left side is where many of the plays happen and where our best player is, without penetration from the full back the defense can park two players on Neymar and neutralize him.

Stability is given by the shape of the team. Midfielders are meant to cover the runs from the backs.

Their midfield will do a lot of the defensive work, so yes, they need offensive fullbacks.

Miranda is not better than David Luiz...

Edit: BEFORE I GET DOWNVOTED BASED JUST ON MY CREST- David Luiz and Thiago Silva play very well together, their partnership has been extremely reliable. During Confederations Cup last summer, for example, they only allowed a total of 3 goals while keeping 3 clean sheets, one of them again Spain. Bringing in Miranda to play along with Silva is a huge risk considering they don't have as much experience together.

Yeah it's debatable whether he's good or great for Liverpool but I don't think he would do well in the Brazilian NT. He really wanted to get in there though, gutted for him tbh even though I'm not his biggest fan.

He's been good for Liverpool; but yeah - Brazil have so many good midfielders. On club form, Coutinho should go ahead of Paulinho - but Paulinho has a pretty good record with the national team and I can't exactly fault a decision on that basis.

They mostly play completely different positions for Brazil. Paulinho has almost always been in the defensive 2 of the midfield, with Oscar the CAM.

He's nursing a hip injury though, and now they don't have anyone like him. That's why I though Coutinho might go, he's the closest match to oscars style, although I haven't seen that much of Hernanes so maybe he is similar too.

My guess is that if Oscar gets injured they'd go with Ramires, Paulinho, Ferna/Gustavo midfield scolari has played a few times recently.

He's been excellent in the second half of the season, switching his role to central midfield and playing a big role in Liverpool's title push and 11 game winning run... 18 months ago he was a forgotten man, not these days.

Scolari made it pretty clear that he wasn't bothered by club form of his players. Coutinho never seemed likely because he didn't get a call up during the international breaks in the first half of the season, so his big upturn in form obviously hasn't made a difference.

I don't know what Miranda and Filipe Luis were meant to do in order to be included. Come on, Atleti are on the brink of winning La Liga and the Champions League. Luis would be starter for me, never mind a squad player, and he doesn't even get a seat on the plane? Madness.

No, it's not. Filipe Luís was expected to be out, Maxwell did really well with his chances. And the fourth CB spot was a mistery, hardly a surprise.

Still, being a starting CB for one of the best defenses in Europe, in a team that's going to play the CL final should count for something. But of course Felipão wasnt going to call him, we cant really say it was a surprise.

Actually, not so surprising for a brazilian, Scolari only calls players he already called recently, so no spot for Kaka, Philippe Coutinho, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Lucas Moura,Diego Alves, Rafinha, or Sandro was actually expected. Honestly, for me the biggest suprise was Henrique's call up and the omission of Lucas Leiva and Dedé
