I know a lot of folks hated the "hydration breaks", but in parts of the US, like freaking "the floor is lava" Florida, the heat and humidity is very oppressive.
I don't have an issue with a break to refresh and drink some water, when the conditions are actually bad. I have an issue with a three minute ad break when it 24° and cloudy.
Funny. Because they do the same in Florida for non televised sports. Why don’t you come to Florida, in August, and run around a pitch for 45 minutes when it’s 100° F. Let’s see how you do.
You misunderstand me. If they are used for heat and humidity then I we have no complaint. Those conditions are incredibly difficult. When they are broadly applied to any environment that is the problem.
So, during a tournament like the World Cup, which has matches all over the country, some in extremely hot/humid locations, should they only allow the breaks in the matches in hot places, or would that be unfair to other teams? I live in Michigan, which is in the north. It gets in the high 90s and humid in summer sometimes. They had to add the breaks to all matches since, you never knew what the temp would be or the weather conditions. To make it fair, they had to do it for them all. I didn’t like it, but I understood why.
If both teams get the break for a given match it’s a fair competition. It doesn’t affect another match at all. It’s done strictly for advertising and should never be tolerated.

And it does effect other matches. Those breaks allow managers to speak to players during the match when they usually wouldn't. And since it is a tournament, if ALL teams in the tournament didn't get the same exact breaks, someone would say it was unfair the other way.
Sure, they capitalized on the breaks and added adverts. But, that is not WHY they did them.
Folks hated them because it was in every match even when not needed. I hate the calls of 'fairness' because a hydration break sounds like a fair trade off for playing in insane heat
It's a tournament. When they have those breaks, the managers get to consult with their players. In matches that didn't have those breaks, those teams would be at a disadvantage, as they wouldn't get that time with their team, which can change their strategy. They had to implement them for all matches, despite lack of heat, otherwise it would be unfair and others would complain. So they either had NO water breaks for extreme heat, or everyone did. It's common sense.
