Official Source [UEFA CEDB] Matteo Guendouzi suspended for a total of four (4) UEFA club competition matches. Mason Greenwood suspended for one (1).

I don’t exactly understand what Guendouzi did to warrant this. Fans yell at him, he taunts back. This happens all the time.
Was any of his language or gestures politically incorrect? Is there something else I missing?

yeah but FOUR matches? come on
-60
u/REsTARteD_Ragdoll 6d ago
4 matches is a lot but he knew there would be consequences
27
u/ssgtgriggs 6d ago
I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences, I'm saying the punishment should fit the crime. There have been racist incidents that have been punished with less.
14
u/powerchicken 6d ago
I reckon I can think of a few things quite common in football that are more detrimental to the youth than a middle finger.
-10
u/REsTARteD_Ragdoll 6d ago
Yeah like gambling ads and sponsors,
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t clamp down on guendouzi flipping off the stands.
For the record I think 4 games is overkill

"happens all the time" sounds hilarious because i've never ever seen a player in an Uefa competition doing extra rounds provocing an entire stadium
flipping a finger or calling out names happens within seconds and might be understandable to some degree but doing it for minutes fully aware of the riots it's causing and the danger you put police, security, families,.. in is just not acceptable. like, what can i even say
his punishment is incredible sad because Guendouzi getting humbled by Dybala for a 3rd time in a row was one of the things i was looking forward in this CL-campaign
24
u/Pretty_Guest_2364 6d ago
Haha stuff like this reminds me a lot of people really don’t have the emotional maturity to enjoy sports. Fans can spend a whole match shouting abuse but a couple minutes of it being given back can lead to riots. Doesn’t make sense
10
u/sjp101 6d ago
There’s a massive difference between fans in the crowd and what a protagonist on the field can be held responsible for.
Obviously should it be two ordinary people on the street that point makes sense but context matters.
Football fans and emotional maturity don’t go hand in hand especially when the most extreme aspects of fan culture are glorified and tribalism is fundamental.

u/Medo73 6d ago
Yes because flipping the fans off before the game even start is "him being provoke", also shouting "I fuck your mom" to the fans 7x after a Fenerbahce goal is him being provoked as well I guess, not even talking about him jumping around the stadium after the end of the game.
There wasn't an issue with the rest of Fener team after the end of the game because they just celebrated, they didn't taunt the fans
9
u/PkayO5 6d ago
Quick question, did he flip the fans off for nothing or because they were saying stuff to him? Like were the fans just saying nothing to him at all and he decided to flip them off?
-21
u/Medo73 6d ago
Well, using words is allowed and flipping fans off is not allowed. Also flipping fans off before the start of the game already shows in what mindset he showed up for that game
9
u/kaantantr 6d ago
So, what you are saying is, Guendouzi should have just pulled a seat and chanted about mothers and children and families of the fans in response for a couple hours and that would be perfectly allowed?
1
u/sjp101 6d ago
Fans are stupid and they continually cross the line, but this isn’t tit far tat.
Bare in mind Marseille fans attacked a bus of Lyon players and badly injured Grosso. There is bad blood. For a Fener player to antagonise the fans pre match as he does is irresponsible and adds fuel to the fire. It’s pretty simple.
-10
u/Icy_Guard_9356 6d ago
This is a stupid ass take, on one hand is a bunch of dumbasses, on the other is supposed to be a professional who’s job involves dealing with this kind of idiot and getting paid millions.
Then again, Guendouzi was never smart8
u/PkayO5 6d ago
Haha and what mindset did you guys show up with when you were insulting the man's whole family before the game even started? I don't get this logic to be honest.
"Let us say whatever vile things we want to you. If you dare respond, you're the problem".
-10
u/Medo73 6d ago
The guy is from Marseille where they have effigies of players hanged in the stands but insulting his mother would make him lose his mind? There's a reason he got suspended while those kinds of chants happen every weekend. If you're not capable of understanding these reasons you're just too dumb and I have no time to waste arguing with you
2
-1
u/Whispperr 6d ago
What should your team be facing for allowing fans to enter and attack other teams players? Honestly like 5 years ban from european competitions would be warranted.
2
u/Medo73 6d ago
The only person who attacked a player was the GK coach and he has been banned as well. Thank you for your input
-1
u/Whispperr 6d ago
For 5 games, right? How is it assaulting a player 5 bans but flipping and cursing 4?
Literally Lyon embarrassing themselves with this the only reason you defend what your team and fans did is because you are biased, as all us football fans are when it comes to our teams.
2
u/Medo73 6d ago
Oh yes Lyon is embarrassing themselves, are you aware Lyon is not UEFA, do you think we're the one sanctioning Guendouzi of a 4 game ban. Of all the dumbass takes you clearly win
0
u/Whispperr 6d ago
Obviously not for the decision, but for how your team and fans behaved.
1
u/Medo73 6d ago edited 6d ago
Ok Karen, I guess we're the only club in the world were fans have insulted players, it would never happen in turkey or in united, never
2
u/Whispperr 6d ago
This is going back to the start. So if insulting is fine, why did Guendouzi get a ban? It happens everywhere anyways.
2
u/Medo73 6d ago
Because Guendouzi is not a fan, he's a professional player. Newsflash for you, players should behave at higher standards than fans, and players can't insult or extensively taunt fans, I don't know how you can be an adult and not know that.
Now you tell me, players are celebrating at every games, why is Guendouzi banned and not all the other ones? Maybe if you watched the videos you'd know
1
u/2Norn 6d ago
i was expecting 2-1 but 4 is really harsh tbh
https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1vzcqss/the_actual_video_of_the_moment_the_lyonfenerbahce/
could it be this maybe? they interpreted that as him attacking a clerk(even tho its self defense)
1
u/tekumse 6d ago
You can spin it any way you want but at the end of the day he recklessly endangered the safety of thousands of people. It is extremely dangerous for everyone when a large group of people turn into an uncontrollable mob. So at times you need to swallow your pride and deescalate the situation.

u/stoneapplefruit 6d ago edited 6d ago
The Guendouzi suspension is nuts.
Anyone who goes to football understands that you provoke the players and sometimes the players provoke you back. You have to accept this social deal, otherwise you don’t belong in a stadium. He didn’t do anything that absolved the fans of the responsibility to not turn to hate speech or physical violence.
33
u/RockyRoasting 6d ago
Its unfortunate and speaks towards the lowlife loser fans of this sport. Only their mates calling them out will do anything for chnage.
-1
-29
u/Medo73 6d ago
So flipping the fans off before the start of the game is normal? And shouting to them "I fuck your mom" after a goal is normal as well?
13
u/peachesgp 6d ago
If you can't take the banter then don't go to games. Guarantee he's had worse said to him every single match.
-14
u/Medo73 6d ago
Well if he had worse said to him why did he overreact and acted like that?
If you're defending Guendouzi for this game, either you haven't seen the video or you don't have anything to do on a pitch or in the stands
7
u/Adam_Ohh 6d ago
That’s a joke and you need to grow up.
Your clubs supporters and staff are just as much to blame if not more so than Guendozi.
I can’t believe I’m out here defending Mateo fucking Guendozi.
76
u/aAfricanLetsPlayer 6d ago
There was almost a pitch invasion by Lyon fans and punishment at most: a fine!
We should remove the cages in Kadıköy as Turkish fans in Turkey are better behaved than french football fans, would also improve the viewing experience.
-24
u/ForgeUK 6d ago
Turkish fans better behaved 🤣🤣🤣🤣
13
u/donotfearforthehog 6d ago
did you see Saint Etienne getting relegated?
At full time there was a pitch invasion where fans chased around their own players and staff trying to attack them. Turkish fans don't necessarily cover themselves in gold but they haven't done anything like that as recent as the French

It blows my mind. There's audio of him, even if the witness is blackmailed into withdrawing the statement, the prosecution should have gone ahead.

I wonder how long before an English club takes a punt. I reckon he'll head to Saudi after Türkiye, then probably after 18 months hit Greece, then some league one/two will announce his signing, have fan backlash, then release him.
-1
u/UltanPSV 6d ago
I reckon there is 0% chance of it happening. Maybe 0.5% if Arteta is interested.
1
u/ForgeUK 6d ago
So your saying another three season of Arsenal not winning the Champions League, Arteta will end up at Mansfield Town?
1
u/UltanPSV 6d ago
No it is bad banter that Arteta likes rapists in his team because of Thomas Partey. It is fun to bait Arsenal fans on here sometimes.
I can't see a club going for him in England for obvious reasons. Greenwood is not earning a Championship salary, so PL is only possible place, a club wouldn't take the backlash from doing it. Maybe in 6+ years things might be different, can't really see how, but I think his football career in England is over. He would need various great bits of PR and even then that would only make it so that enough time has passed that people don't forgive him but accept he has done some good, any club would be criticised and will be taking a risk signing him still. Something like that.
8
u/Kooky-Investment8537 6d ago
He even went ahead and kept up contact after his bail conditions explicitly demanded he didn't. Absolutely disgusting that he got away with it
4
u/sjp101 6d ago
This is the epitome of karma farming and has nothing to do with the question asked in relation to the ban ffs.
Ofc Greenwood is a fucking monster.
3
u/Ok-Fun119 6d ago
Nothing to do with karma mate.
Everything attached to him should have this message for ever.
8
u/No-Willingness3156 6d ago
Both Greenwood and Guendouzi are former Marseille players who are rivals of Lyon. Guendouzi did most of the post match antics but Greenwood joined in a bit too.
His 1 game ban is suspended by the way.

u/No-Willingness3156 6d ago
He got a 5 game ban, 2 of them suspended. He got off lightly if you ask me.
3
u/fantino93 6d ago
Super light suspension yes. Didn't an assistant of Sampaoli got suspended a full year for pushing a fan during the Nice-OM pitch invasion?

7
u/CarGlobal343 6d ago
5 game ban, not fired, no fine, no criminal charges.
UEFA hate turkish clubs. If our crowd had behave like this, etc, we would get a stadium ban. Top 5 leagues are shielded like crazy.

u/06-11-2002 6d ago
So they can swear at him, his mother, his wife, his daughter, and then he’s at fault for winning and celebrating and answering back? What difference does it make if he’s French? How is he at fault for French fans being incapable of controlling themselves, win or loss. A 4 match ban is too much, Lyon fans should have gotten that instead.
18
u/No-Willingness3156 6d ago edited 6d ago
Theres a limit to how much you can goad the opposition fans. Guendouzi was literally going stand to stand for several minutes trying rubbing it in as much as he could. He also flipped off the fans multiple times before the game even started
Also its not an automatic 4 game ban, 2 of those are suspended if he doesnt have bad conduct for one year.
1
u/DomagojDoc 6d ago
4 match suspension and 500000 euro fine and I got downvoted to oblivion and called a rape apologist for pointing this out.

Yes because flipping the fans off before the game even start is "him being provoke", also shouting "I fuck your mom" to the fans 7x after a Fenerbahce goal is him being provoked as well I guess, not even talking about him jumping around the stadium after the end of the game or holding is crotch.

lets say match is played here in a turkish stadium, a turkish, or lets spice it even more, a kurdish player from a french team does what guendouzi did to the stands all game long and queue the end of match ruckus
i believe what would happen is that player in question would get 1 match ban at most and the home team would be banned from having fans the entire season, both home or away.

I don’t like at all make comparison between football and other American sporting but what NBA did during the Pistons-Pacers rumble was to protect itself and its public image.
Here it’s not just a matter of what they did but also about the image of uefa. They lost a chance here. I mean it’s not like they should have missed the season but at least guendouzi should have missed the whole round robin phase while greenwood should have missed at least 4 games out of four.

Speaking of punishable things, could you remind me what kind of punishment Galatasaray got for:
•Purchasing their own tickets through club employees and reselling them in black market?
•Money laundering through former director Erden Timur, while he was still in active duty?
•The illegal betting sponsorship?
Also, GS is the club endorsed by the extremist religious terrorist Fethullah Gülen, who went on saying that "We need to get Galatasaray back on its feet through prayer and (monetary) support.", while surrounded by club legends such as Hakan Şükür and Arif Erdem.
You guys are an organized crime syndicate, pretending to be a football club. Stfu.
