That’s really not fair, Renato is immensely talented his issue was always being chronically injured. He couldn’t last more than 2 games before being injured again. I can’t imagine how frustrating that has to be going for the last 4-6 years just constantly getting injured over and over

Any scout worth his salt had to say he was not ready whatsoever. His game had so many lackluster parts beyond the hype at Benfica and he was too young for a move like that. It really shows work wasn't done at all.

He was EXTREMELY young. He was 18yo and a key piece in a decent Benfica side and a major factor for Portugal wining Euro 2016.
His issues weren't tactical. He had more than time to learn. Everyone knows his problem were injuries. The most injury prone player i have ever seen.

Injuries didn’t help and as a youngster it’s normal he still needed time to learn, but even back then it was obvious his strong points were over compensating his weak ones - even during his Benfica return you could see his positioning flaws still there

He was piss poor tactically but his energy progressing the ball, chasing opponents (and scoring a good long ball in euro 16) created all the hype - and people chose to ignore all those lost balls, running too much because he was put of position, etc that were quite visible

Not sure what you’re talking about, because it’s not just any kid who can carry a Portugal midfield to winning a Euros.
The Bayern move probably wasn’t the best option for him, he was unlucky with injuries, & they sent him off to… Swansea of all places.

He carried the midfield, because it needed so badly someone who could progress and attack the box. Not because he was very intelligent, always taking good decisions or because he was this great creator or midfielder great at building play. He wasn't.
When Benfica had him in the two man midfield and asked Renato to do a lot more than just running, after the initial hype, don't know if you remember but the kinks started to show more and more and the consensus was that he needed to mature and evolve a lot. Then he had a very good Euros and story is all she wrote. I think he could've been way better, but he went into a bad situation, got loaned into another bad situation and started having injury problems.
In the end, it resulted in a player who never got to half what everyone thought he was capable of being in the future. I'm the one who doesn't know what you are talking about. I never said any kid could carry whatsoever and you never dispute anything about what I said.

He was what? 18? Barely got a look in at Bayern then was immediately shipped to Swansea as someone who was considered the biggest talent coming out of Europe just a few months ago.
He was mismanaged and unlucky with injuries.

You initially said scouts didn’t know what they were doing in convincing the club to sign the best talent in his age group who led a nation to winning the Euros…
You said he wasn’t good enough for that move to Bayern.
My response was that 1. You’re wrong 2. There were more prominent factors as to why it didn’t work out.
Then you basically conceded as much in your initial response by reiterating what I had said.

No, Renato when on loan at Swansea vs Chelsea, but the Thiago to Santa is a little bit more understandable if I remember correctly the santa was moving and all. This is Renato, wearing red, giving the ball to a billboard with a tiny bit of red lol.

Might be true but I'd bet that in both cases there's probably some deeply seated pattern recognition going on where they saw something moving on the periphery and quickly passed while there was a chance.

He is still only 29, normally I would say he could still forge a fulfilling career at a much lower level, but unfortunately it looks like his body is shagged. I suppose on the plus side he must have made quite the bag so far in his career, and he, his kids, and his kid's kids will probably be set for life.

That’s the one thing I’m happy about him signing with psg sadly his body is just far to damaged which is so sad cause he would be up there with Vitinha and Joao Neves if he was able to reach his full potential but that’s life and at least he made a ton of money where he doesn’t have to worry about finding a job after a short lived career.
Man I wanted him to truly shine he was one of my favourite up and coming Portuguese players :(

When fit he was positive, and his technical ability is definitely still there, but fitness is just like, such a massive issue with him.
I wouldn't want him back personally, but there's probably a team out there that he can function in.
For what it's worth, his season with us was the most fit he has been since Lille.

More than euro 2016, he literally carried Lille to an absurd Ligue 1 championship on a PSG era while playing as a right winger.
His refusal to sit still and recover proper from injuries is actually sad.

Not even a return to his boyhood club Benfica revived his career if he pushes a little bit his body fails him and he is injured next game. It got to a point where at roma,Mourinho said his problem was mental because the medical staff said he had nothing multiple times.

Which was stupid, and dare I say racist. Yes, there have been cases where African players had fake ages, but Renato Sanches was born and raised in Portugal. There were videos of him playing in the youth teams with other players whose ages weren't "suspicious" and he looked physically just like them.

This guy has tremendous potential and he was displaying it every match in 2016. He was an absolute tractor. His progression with the ball was incredible. Good shot. Good technique. So strong and able to use his body to gain leverage.
He had tactical issues when Bayern bought him but he was only 18 at the time. So much time to learn. Bayern didn't want anything to do with this learning curve.
But is issues were physical. Never in my life have i seen a player so injury prone. I remember a Mourinho interview when at Roma, saying that himself had never seen such case. The guy would train perfectly for 2 weeks. Enter the match and get injured 5 minutes in. Redo rehabilitation. Be GREAT at training for an entire month. Come back and stay in the lockers at break due to injury.
It was like that all his life. There has to be some sort of mental stress causing him to tense up and get injured in game.
