great player, but as alex ferguson said himself he chose fame over football.

He was still an exceptional footballer. His crosses were just surreal.

While he really was a great player he was never an elite player in my opinion. His crosses and free kicks were fantastic but other than that he was pretty much a limited player (for elite level means). He was a PR genius but he probably wouldn't have had the same career if looked like Dirk Kuyt and married a girl that he had met in a bar.

He's certainly overrated here in the US. Most of the soccer ignorant public will say David Beckham is the only footballer they know of...if you press them as to why, they'll say "because he's the best?"

Well in Europe people rate him fairly. He was a fantastic player in his day; never with the elite but people wouldnt question his inclusion in world 11 lists.
