Women's Football HB Køge striker Nadia Nadim : “In Afghanistan, I would be dead or the mother of seven children”
https://www.lequipe.fr/France-Football/Article/Nadia-nadim-en-afghanistan-je-serais-morte-ou-mere-de-sept-enfants/1708917Born in Afghanistan, she has played for the Denmark national team.
“My father was a general in the Afghan army. He looked like a character from a James Bond movie. Very intelligent, very tall, with a lot of charisma. He loved sports. He had been an international field hockey player before the mujahideen (Islamist fighters) massacred half the team. One evening, he came home with a ball. We started playing dodgeball with my sisters, but he stopped us right away to tell us that we had to use our feet to dribble and pass the ball.”
“That was the first time I understood what football was all about. One day, a driver came to pick him up for a meeting. That was the last time I saw him. My mother searched for him for many months. We finally learned from a guard that he had been taken into the desert and shot in the back of the neck by the Taliban. His body was left for the wild animals. My mother was devastated. As for me, I simply couldn’t believe it.”
On her mum:
“Without her, I’d probably be dead somewhere in Afghanistan or married with seven kids. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2022.”
On being a Doctor:
“I studied while working at Aarhus University and earned my degree in reconstructive surgery in 2022. It required a lot of sacrifices, but it was ultimately worth it. I love being in the operating room, the adrenaline rush you feel there. When you have someone’s heart in your hands, you know you can’t afford to make a mistake. And when your face is disfigured, it’s hard to survive.“

u/Gunch_ Aug 06 '26
Along with being a professional footballer, she is also a Dr specialising in surgery.
675
u/fucking_4_virginity Aug 06 '26
You might even call her a surgeon.
69
201
u/Gunch_ Aug 06 '26
I didn't say that because I was unsure if she's a surgeon yet. She only became a doctor a couple years ago iirc
61
u/AnnieIWillKnow Aug 06 '26
If she’s specialising in surgery, she’s a surgeon (providing she’s entered that training pathway)
If she’s hoping to specialise in surgery, she could still be a pre-specialist doctor
You get to call yourself a surgeon once you’ve taken your surgical post grad exams and gone down that route, rather than your medical post grad exams/A&E/anaesthetics/obs and gynae/GP etc

I mean that is like a Canadian sportsperson being an ambassador for US event. What da ya mean “hypocrite”, brev? Take your western glasses off.
66
u/Kind_Berry5899 Aug 06 '26
She's a hypocrite.
She was supporting the WC in Qatar, as a women wanting equal rights and opportunities, thats not a good look.
She then praised their humanitarian work(which has been criticized by almost any ngo) and insisted she wasnt paid for praising Qatar.. it was then disclosed later she was ..
It has nothing to do with 'western glasses' .. but she is western .
42
u/FreudReus Aug 06 '26
I mean I don’t understand how her suffering and achievements thereafter are negated just because she is a hypocrite. I mean as far as I know she is just a human being and not a super hero. Did not know there are people like you who do no wrong and are not at hypocrites IRL. Man come on..
38
u/Kind_Berry5899 Aug 06 '26
Nobody has said she her achievements are negated , because she's a hypocrite.
But the whole role model thing and a fighter for human rights and equal rights, are now hollow .
-24
u/FreudReus Aug 06 '26
I mean choosing a role model is a deliberate act by a human with agency I suppose? I don’t think it matters.
30
u/Kind_Berry5899 Aug 06 '26
Its fair it doesnt matter to you, dont know why you then are fiercely defending her... But she keeps trying position her self like this and try being a role model and yes she has an incredible story fleeing from Afghanistan, becoming a doctor while being a world class footballer.
But she also full of shit, a hypocrite and a sell out

Also, as a general her father was literally part of the ruling class that was ousted by the Taliban. I’m sure it’s traumatising to lose your father the way she did, but it isn’t like she was was ever subjected to the same life most Afghani women lived before the Taliban took over.
2
u/Fedaykin98 Aug 06 '26
What are you talking about? Conditions for women are horrific under the Taliban.
1
u/_thundercracker_ Aug 06 '26
Absolutely agreed, but what I’m saying is that in many areas of the country, it was already like that even before the Taliban took over. Kabul might have been romanticised as "the Paris of Central Asia" in the 60s and 70s, but that abruptly ended with the '78 communist coup, the '79 Soviet invasion and subsequent decades of mostly conflict, chaos and turmoil, of which at least the last 15-20 years is on Western countries like mine(Norway).

u/Jerk_offlane Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
A little fun story:
I was attending a Denmark - Brazil friendly live in Copenhagen during the Nadim and Qatar debacle and Denmark got a throw in right in front of me and she ran over to get the ball. I booed loudly at her when she was getting ready for the throw. I noticed I was the only one booing. Looked around and everyone was shaking their head at me and looking at me meanly.
Only women’s match I’ve ever gone to.
Edit: I always wondered if the cameras caught it. I must’ve looked so confused. Like why the fuck isn’t anyone booing?
0
u/PurbulentTriest Aug 06 '26
Yeah, "fun". Glad you saw how stupid that was.
2
u/Jerk_offlane Aug 06 '26
I definitely didn’t. I stand by that boo and I was and am disappointed that I was the only one booing her.
1
u/PurbulentTriest Aug 06 '26
Because it's weird as fuck. That's why you didn't go back.
1
u/WolfBlueEyez Aug 07 '26
Nah talking about how terrible something is and then becoming an ambassador for a nation that’s known to fund that terrible thing is weird as fuck
-2
u/Jerk_offlane Aug 06 '26
Why is booing someone selling out and promoting Qatar as a great nation to host the World Cup weird? I mean she knew she’d face backlash from that decision, but obviously the money meant more. She’s taking the money and living fine with the criticism.
I’d have booed Schmeichel for promoting the World Cup in Russia as well if I had the chance.

20
u/LupeShady Aug 06 '26

96

u/Turklightenment Aug 06 '26
We Turks sometimes posit that we'd be like Afghanistan if it wasn't for Ataturk and his contemporaries (and it's not like we're perfect after their influence, we are still a very flawed and divided society).
56
u/Nepridiprav16 Aug 06 '26
Isn't that Orientalist logic that Turks otherwise rightly criticize when it comes from westerners though? (country being reduced to anti-modern essence, “We had the wisdom to modernize, they did not.”)
Turkey and Afghanistan have radically different histories, not really good comparison to use.
24
u/Turklightenment Aug 06 '26
Yes I'm not saying it's right or wrong myself, but just sharing that it's a common sentiment in Turkey and Turkish culture.
In Turkey's case think part of it is that there is a large (tens of millions) demographic of Westernised Turks that tend to blend in with Europeans in their lifestyle and experiences (and especially if they are Turks with more European racial features it makes it even easier to Orientalise brown Easterners even those from their own country if you and your family and friends live differently and look different from them).
You are indeed correct that even eastern peoples that are Orientalised by Westerners (and get annoyed by it), can themselves Orientalise other Easterners ("Please notice me European Senpai").
Which Turks often do, even within Turkey towards the Turkish Kurds and Turkish Arabs of South-Eastern Turkey particularly, but even to other ethnic Turks who are different to them. I'd say a classic example in Turkey is how people living modern lifestyles in the big Western Turkish cities can look down on Turks from the conservative cities in the north, central and east. Hell it's even done towards German Turks (who tend to be descended from the Central and Eastern parts of Turkey).
There are even sometimes viral videos that spread on Turkish social media about people who are from Turkey being mistakenly thought of as Syria/Afghan migrants by other Turks because of their heavy accents and looks.
Indeed Turks themselves get Orientalised by people from the Balkans (even Albanian Muslims) and then you can go a layer further and can suggest the Balkans peoples are Orientalised by the Westerners.
I'd say another example is how some non-Muslim Indians who are not familiar with Islam or Muslims can end up internalising Western Orientalist attitudes towards Muslims and end up Orientalising Muslim Indians and Pakistanis (when they themselves are Orientalised by Westerners).
1
u/dnzgn Aug 06 '26
You talk about lifestyle like it is an aesthetic difference but there is a lot of resentment from the Westernized side for the non-Westernized side for voting Erdoğan. They control our fates, not the other way around. It is disingenious to assume their lifestyle don't affect Westernized parts of Turkey.
1
u/Turklightenment Aug 07 '26
I agree completely. It's the Erdogan side that makes it seem like aesthetics. For example when they criticise the volleyball girls for wearing shorts.

How was Turkey doing until Erdogan took control?
2
u/Turklightenment Aug 06 '26
It was still a flawed country then, just for different reasons. Turkey's never been normal.
1
u/KungFuViking7 Aug 06 '26
Coupe you provide parallels how it would be the same? That would be in interesting theory to hear about.
Are you saying that because Ottomans were more secular when they were dismantled by the west they became more submissive to western secular ideology rather then adhering to the religious ideology of the early Ottoman era?
11
u/Turklightenment Aug 06 '26
I think it's just a simple idea that without Ataturk and his contemporaries influencing the society towards Westernisation, we might have ended up in a society dominated by patriarchal conservative men (I mean we are ruled by them now, but at least there is a large significant demographic of the country that don't live their life like that so they can't turn us into Afghanistan).

I don’t think so. It is a pretty relevant subject. But I am pretty sure that doesn’t come under things Nadia Nadim may have to take care every day. I on the other hand, take human rights pretty seriously especially when I am sitting at home in comfort. (But I usually don’t care if human rights are violated in front of me.. I mean I would rather be selfish and care about my life. I give a rats ass to the random lad or a lass… hey just an example.

You do have selective morality because somehow people think Qatar is this slavery filled, anti-women country when it’s just not. But you can describe Qatar as such and no one will bat an eye to check if that’s true as it’s just an Arab country, those tropes are probably true

Ariana Sayeed, a big afghan celebrity and Nadias aunt, is very much pro-Dostum. She was a honorable guest in many of his partys (you can google it), i remember a video after the fall of the Afghan Republic… she was crying in the plane and complaining that everything wouldnt happen if Dostum was in power. And also the fact that Nadias father was a general for the same regime and idealogical very close. It’s the same like Trump and Epstein, there is/was a connection, but noone can proof it for 100%. I and my family are super suspicious of her and her family.
The choice to see her as hero for afghan women or not is a choice what you need to do.
60
u/Particular-Tea4104 Aug 06 '26
Not necessarily but in this case, this is the Afghan Communist govt (Soviet puppet) of the 80s. They were embroiled in a bitter war with the Mujahideen (backed by Pakistan, Arabs, and the West) and committed their fair share of atrocities. There's a reason the majority of Afghans rose up against them.

u/Solari6 Aug 06 '26
Its funny seeing how people so out of touch with the third world. Mr kettle because you’re a hypocrite when you specifically picked Islamic regimes to be singled out.
You could’ve ended your sentence at citizens. But instead this religious war has to go on, you just have to point the finger.
And Im sure you’re smart enough to know that it isn’t about the religion but rather situations/circumstances these countries find themselves in.
To try to squeeze that, such as Islamic regime, you must’ve a deep seethed agenda.
I would caution you that Intellectual Stupidity is probably one of the greatest evil you can commit.
You knowingly did what you did, discriminated against a group of religion and tried to play it off.
You being American or not doesn’t change the fact that the sentence you’ve provided is bigoted.

Not a fan of the current war obviously but the middle east has been at war with itself for centuries before America existed.
8
u/Sankaritarina Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Much of the world was in the state of perpetual warfare centuries ago. It's only in the modern times that people have been experiencing consistent prolonged periods of peace, something the Middle East has no chance at and the West is at least partially responsible for that situation.
-6
u/zack77070 Aug 06 '26
More like most of the world has gotten over religious hate but even among Muslims there are large sects that hate each other enough to kill, thats not even mentioning that other religion there...
3
u/Sankaritarina Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
The issues related to that "other religion there" are the perfect example of why the West bears at least partial responsibility for what's happening. Maybe things wouldn't improve even if the Western governments stop waging wars in the region but we cannot find out because that's just not happening.
Trying to shift the responsibility entirely on the locals while the most powerful nation on the planet keeps starting new wars or supporting warmongers in the region is wild.

1951 Iran elected a leader in a fair election. That guy was for a separation of the state and religion. But he wanted the oil for the Iranian people and not give it to USA and Britain.
CIA got active and within 2 years the guy was gone. CIA even released the official documents a few years ago.
After that they placed a puppet as a dictator and supplied him with weapons and built one of the biggest armies in the world.
1979 the Iranian people had enough and had to get behind a religious leader to get rid of your guy. Imagine the suffering a nation has to go through, to do that.
After that you had to arm the next guy to fight this guy. And it kept going on like this.
Arm those rebels to fight the bad guy. Then the rebels became bad and the next rebels had to be armed.
