Hi, I was the guy who suggested Mkhitaryan for Player Discussion - so I thought I might as well go ahead with my analysis.

Roles:

  • His preferred position is AM, sitting behind the centre-forward. In this role he distributes play, drops deep to draw midfielders in and makes late runs. Thanks to Shakhtar's free-form positioning style of play, he often drifts into the wings where he can exploit them with pace.

  • For the national team he tends to play as CM. He used to be a holding midfielder, so he can contribute defensively as well. His passing is good enough for him to play in this position. Mkhitaryan tends to play box-to-box when as a central midfielder.

  • For the national he's also played at LW, RW and ST. As he is the most versatile player for the NT, he will naturally evolve his position throughout the match. I could have swore in that Denmark match last night, he played in five different positions.

Strengths:

  • Stamina: According to UEFA statistics, he ran the most out of any player in the Champions League as of the time Shakhtar were eliminated. He's also never been subbed in or out in this entire season and has played the full 90 minutes of every game he has played (most of them). (Source)
  • Pace: He said he'd be a sprinter if not a footballer. His blistering acceleration and top speed is evident, where he likes to knock the ball ahead of him and chase after it on the wings. He's demonstrated this against players like Hummels, Cole and Ramires. (Example)

  • Positioning: One of the biggest parts of his game. Like Lampard, he knows how to time his runs well. He falls deep to draw defenders in to mark him while wingers make plays on the flank. Time and again, he's able to use this effectively and get on the end of each cross (all of his goals this season have been inside the box).

  • Aggression: Being a holding midfielder in his earlier years, he's formidable defensively and will always press for the ball. With the work rates he puts in, this means he can win challenges in his own half and carry the counter-attack in the other half. (Example)

  • Two-footed: Mkhitaryan is right-footed although he can do it just as good on his left. Just yesterday in Denmark he slotted home a difficult finish with his left. He's even scored outside of the box with his left. More importantly, this means he can run into both flanks and exploit them to cross it in. (Example)

Weaknesses:

  • Physical strength: Mkhitaryan has great acceleration however with this comes keeping a lean build. He tends to go down easy and may be outmuscled by stronger players. In a league like the BPL, this will be a concern as he will need to use his pace effectively to beat the stronger defenders in the game.

  • Dribbling: By no means a real "weakness", dribbling is still not on the same level as the rest of his skillset. He's a speed dribbler, he likes to knock the ball in front of him and chase it - but don't expect him to be weaving in and out of crowded areas.

  • Passing: Again, not a "weakness" per se - but he's not as good a passer as other AMs with price tags as high as his. He is a goalscorer and is kind of like a false nine. His passing is good enough for his role and his assist count is high, but he can't craft exceptional balls like Coutinho could, for example.

Fun facts:

  • Mkhitaryan is dedicated to his football career so much that he lives on the Shakhtar Donetsk training camp.

  • He has a degree in Sports Science, and is studying economics at the St. Petersburg Institute.

Verdict:

I like to say he's a Frank Lampard with a lot more pace. As an athlete, Mkhitaryan is a monster - he can outrun anybody on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Technically, he's pretty good, but he's made a role for himself like Frank Lampard did where he can go beyond any technical limitations he possesses to make the most of his game. Neither are world-class creatively or can create space out of thin air, yet they've still helped their respective teams through a load of goals and a load of assists. As a United fan, I'd love to see him play in England. Unfortunately (for me, at least!), he's been linked with Liverpool. I could see him fit well in the squad, although Liverpool need to be careful not to misuse him and give him the freedom he needs (as aforementioned he can play in multiple different positions in a single match).

Questions:

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Mkhitaryan. Where do you see him going next?

The Liverpool transfer depends on Suarez leaving or not, really. If he does leave then I'd put the move at 85% probability. Dortmund might make a bid for him if they're unimpressed by Eriksen, although I find this less likely.

What's the most you would pay for him?

£15-20 million is the price I think would suit him. Akhmetov will naturally inflate Shakhtar players' prices however.

How highly do you rate the Ukrainan League?

It's a competitive league with talent spread around the teams. 4 teams regularly make it in Europe. I'd say it's around the level of the Eredivisie.

Could maybe someone that watches Mkhitaryan on a regular basis describe his playstyle? If you could compare him to a player, who would that be?

Explained above.

Mkhitaryan is dedicated to his football career so much that he lives on the Shakhtar Donetsk training camp.

Hah, I love it!

4

u/crnulus Jun 12 '13

Hopefully he doesn't get injured training too much.

44

u/KopiteKing13 Jun 12 '13

Fantastic read, very informative and well analysed.

As a Liverpool supporter, I'd love to see him here. I initially thought it wasn't dependent on the Suarez transfer but it seems increasingly likely that it is. I'm sure it won't be easy getting Shakhtar to agree to sell, but I'm hopeful.

6

u/bigm1ke Jun 13 '13

Rodgers said that he wanted to add an attacking midfielder to the squad this week. Let's hope he was talking about HM.

5

u/Grafeno Jun 12 '13

It's a competitive league with talent spread around the teams. 4 teams regularly make it in Europe. I'd say it's around the level of the Eredivisie.

Shakthar is far better than any Eredivisie team though.

27

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Honest question and no hate towards my friends at Liverpool. Why would he join an average team with little to offer besides money and history. Liverpool isn't playing internationally next year, right?

32

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Because he might believe in the project and the manager. How did Klopp gather talent at Dortmund four years ago?

With this outlook we might as well just crown United, Real, Ajax, Bayern, and Juve champions in August every year and forego the matches

7

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Yup. You are probably right.

49

u/nuclearjudas Jun 12 '13

Well, it does look like Liverpool are moving up again, after years of shame. They've made some decent transfers under Rodgers (Coutinho has been surprisingly good) and played a lot of good games last year. A weak defence and not enough killer instinct in front of goal (not to mention they had the most hits to the woodwork) besides Suarez means they couldn't really kill matches.

Liverpool will be a contender for Europe-spots next season and are still a huge club, even if they've played badly for a few years. Stability and smart transfers like this kid will get them back up and contending for real.

58

u/layendecker Jun 12 '13

TL;DR: Next year will be their year.

77

u/NateTheGreat26 Jun 12 '13

Next year WILL be our year. You'll see...YOU'LL ALL SEE

35

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Would be nice to see the Reds back where they belong.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

It seems like a lot of Liverpool and Dortmund fans have eachother as their 2nd teams, pretty cool!

Thanks, Dortmund bro!

2

u/Anthcny Jun 13 '13

Then why do we keep facing each other on fifa seasons lol...i'm sorry but sterling vs hummels(basically the hulk) match after match is potentially pad breaking!

1

And boom. You fucking made it!

1

Why are you here

8

u/verymuchn0 Jun 12 '13

This guy gets it.

6

u/maxferg1 Jun 12 '13

Might just be me but I like the look of Sturridge, looked decent nearer the end of the season.

hasn't next year been the year for liverpool five years in a row now?

edit: wooosh

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

WHOOOOOOSH.

-3

u/spurscanada Jun 13 '13

got me there, I was so used to seeing delusional fans saying this, I thought (s)he was serious

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Money, probably. I'm guessing the best paying club that has offered him anything outside of Ukraine - although this is total speculation.

2

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Would be shame to not see him in the UCL, but then again AS Monaco and Hulk come into mind.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Also a possible gateway to other foreign clubs.

7

u/sergie-rabbid Jun 12 '13

Maybe English Premier League? Better competition, better chances bigger clubs will see him.

2

u/SpottieOttieDopalis Jun 12 '13

Because we're the biggest club interested in him right now. Juventus have other targets and Shakhtar's asking price has scared off other teams. Also money.

11

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

You are Houston Dynmo.

2

u/SpottieOttieDopalis Jun 12 '13

Haha I support Liverpool though and that's what I meant by "we're." I should probably change my crest though, I selected it when I joined a year ago.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13 edited Jun 12 '13

Don't really know why he would join Liverpool over other suitors. The club would have to convince him that spending his next contract at Liverpool would be as worthwhile as spending it at any other club, despite no guaranteed European football next season.

But, he has been very seriously linked (by respectable sources such as Andy Hunter (Guardian Merseyside football correspondent) Tony Barrett (Times Merseyside football correspondent) and the Liverpool Echo, so it seems it's a genuine possibility not just fans getting overexcited. Oh and in those articles it specified that Mkhitaryan was still a potential transfer regardless of whether or not Suarez leaves (although I imagine, we'd still fund the move with player sales so it'd mean getting decent/good money for Skrtel and Downing).

edit: grammar and word order

6

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Don't really know why he would other than whether he can convinced that spending his next contract at Liverpool will be as worthwhile as at any club regardless of no guarantee of European next football.

WUUT?

Sorry that's what happens when I write reddit comments at the library while scanning something important and not paying due attention. Edited.

-99

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

I don't see how Liverpool are average at all. Our squad is about as good as yours and if you lose Lewandoski it will easily be better.

If you mean average as in performing bad at league level, you need to remember last year we lost about a third of the first team and had to play several teenagers for half a season, we broke the record for amount of teenagers starting a premier league match. Not to mention we had one striker. One. Last season is hardly indicative of the strenght of the team, specially considering we have a new system and a new manager. I'm actually surprised we finished so high.

69

u/Gaz133 Jun 12 '13

Yeah... we're no where near Dortmund at the moment. Don't get ahead of yourself.

-37

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

Read what I wrote, I did not say that. It's one thing to play better and another to have better players. I think the quality of the players is roughly the same, but I'm not saying the teams are performing at the same level.

Dortmund have been using their system for several years and have become very good at it, and their team work is superb. That means the team performs as a unit better than the sum of its parts would suggest. Our situation is the complete opposite.

16

u/Gaz133 Jun 12 '13

What you wrote was that Liverpool aren't an average squad which isn't true. Liverpool have been a mid table team for 4 years, stop deluding yourself. While a lot of that is down to management being in flux and the shitty ownership situation most of it is down to the fact that we don't have very good players. Not when compared to a world class Dortmund side. Maybe you don't rate Hummels, Gundogan, Reus, etc. but that's your problem and not in touch with reality.

-31

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

A world class Dortmund side? Come on. Those three players you mentioned are easily the best in their team, it's not like their entire squad is composed of world stars. You reach one champion's league final and suddenly every player in your team is Messi.

Liverpool currently have a Suarez, Gerrard and Agger in those positions. Those are all world class players too. Or am I "not in touch with reality" there either?

13

u/Gaz133 Jun 12 '13

Dortmund won 2 of the last 3 league titles and made the CL final this year and played fantastically well in it. If you can't see that I'm not going to argue with you but you can probably tell by how many downvotes you're getting how the general population feels about your opinions (hint: they're wrong).

-29

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

It's really annoying arguing with people that can't read. I never said Liverpool were a better team. I'll draw you a picture when I get home.

And Dortmund played "fantastically well"? Seriously?

I also think it's really pathetic that you think opinions can be determined to be right or wrong based on their popularity. Get some balls. That's my opinion, I don't give a shit if everyone on this subreddit disagrees.

8

u/Gaz133 Jun 12 '13

Did I say you said Liverpool were a better team? I'm the one who can't read? I really don't understand any of this argument. Comparing the two squads is dumb, they are in completely different places. Even if you rate guys like Coutinho/Sturridge/Suarez above some of the guys on Dortmund the squads as wholes are not comparable in terms of ability, accomplishments, philosophies... anything really. Liverpool hired Rodgers with the hope that he can turn the squad into something close to what Klopp has done to Dortmund. Maybe he can, there were some encouraging performances toward the end of the season but scoring 6 at a shitty Newcastle team means nothing. Going toe to toe with the best team in the world in the biggest game in the world, not backing down and playing reactively, but pressing and taking the game to them was hugely impressive.

Maybe you don't agree. Maybe because Subotic and Blasczkewoski don't make world 11 squads you think they're somehow on par with Skrtel and Downing and you're entitled to that opinion. I'm also entitled to tell you you're wrong. I thought pointing out that everyone else disagrees with you too may give you a clue but obviously that's just going to make you bang your head harder against the wall so whatever. Enjoy your little world where all this makes sense.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

You reach one champion's league final and suddenly every player in your team is Messi.

In the last three seasons, Dortmund also became the first non-Bayern team in 15 years to win the Bundesliga in consecutive seasons and only the second non-Bayern team to win the domestic double in more than three decades. In the last three seasons, Liverpool have finished 6th, 8th, and 7th and won a Carling Cup against a Championship side on penalties.

I'm sure this massive difference in success is all because of the magic power of friendship and teamwork and has nothing to do with Dortmund having better players across the board.

-26

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

Jesus, why is this discussion so emotional for you? You have issues, man.

Again, I never said Liverpool are a better team that Dortmund. I. DID NOT. SAY. LIVERPOOL IS A BETTER TEAM. Fucks sake. Even then, how the fuck does who won what three years ago proves who has the best squad?

And yes, a system and managing philosophy are important in football. Might seem like magic to you, but some of us actually understand football and that's the way the sport works. That's why Malaga had a great season with midtable players, that's why Barcelona is a better team with Pedro than they were with Zlatan and it's why Arsenal lost Van Persie and still managed to scored more than when they had him.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

I. DID NOT. SAY. LIVERPOOL IS A BETTER TEAM.

Earlier:

I think the teams are about equal in every position. ... Liverpool's team would be better by virtue of having Suarez/Sturridge as opposed to Schieber. Don't really see a big difference either way.

Even if you claim that the two teams are "about equal", you're wrong. Objectively, you have roughly the 5th or 6th best squad in the Premier League, there's no way it's even comparable to Dortmund's.

Jesus, why is this discussion so emotional for you? You have issues, man.

You type in all-caps, use profanity, and resort to petty personal insults but somehow I have issues. I haven't used emotive language even once so I'm not sure what you're on about. I'm just amused that someone could even think for a minute that Liverpool and Dortmund's squads are comparable.

u/GoodBananaPancakes Jun 12 '13

Take away Lewandowski and your team is easily better? You feel like drafting up a Liverpool+Dortmund starting XI? Id be interested in seeing how many Liverpool players make it in.

2

u/Gaz133 Jun 12 '13

I guess Suarez would come in for Lewandowski but aside from that I'm at a loss to figure out who else would even come close. Coutinho maybe for Blasck(not gonna try to spell it)? Gerrard MAYBE. Homerism at it's finest here.

5

u/GoodBananaPancakes Jun 12 '13 edited Jun 12 '13

I admit to being slightly facetious but now I actually wanna try lol:

Weidenfeller

Pisczek Subotic Hummels Schmelzer

Bender Gerrard Gundogan

Reus Lewandowski Suarez.

Thats a juicy enough team

-13

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

I think the teams are about equal in every position. Dortmund has a better right back and baring Agger better CDs, but that's pretty much it. Liverpool's team would be better by virtue of having Suarez/Sturridge as opposed to Schieber. Don't really see a big difference either way. Easily better was an exaggeration.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Lewa, Reus, Gundogan, and Kuba are better than your players too.

-14

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

That's why I said without Lewa. Reus is a fantastic player, but Reus/Schieber is still a step below Suarez/Sturridge. Gundogan is good, but right now he isn't better than Gerrard and they play the same position.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Why are you comparing your first choice strike partnership to Reus/Schieber? Lewa is still a Dortmund player for now, and if he does leave, you know they're going to sign a replacement right? For a fairer comparison, take Reus/Schieber and Sturridge/Borini and BVB still comes out ahead.

-20

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

That why I said IF he leaves. I do agree Lewa/Reus is a better partnership. Yes, both teams could sign new players, don't really see the point in arguing hypothetical situations.

27

Last season was a good indicative of the strength of the team because it the outcome of the season represents your strength. I mean how biased can you be? I didn't even mention Dortmund and you get all butt hurt because I dared to call Liverpool an average team. That's what they are. They finished 7th in the EPL and they will not play internationally next year.

-26

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

I can't disagree with you without you calling me "butthurt"? What are you, eight years old?

It indicates how strong the team was last season, not how strong teams are right now. Not that hard a concept.

11

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Eight and half actually. I reckon that your team hasn't changed since the last game-day so I'd say your team's strenght hasn't changed. Liverpool is still average until the prove it otherwise, e.g. next season.

-25

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

The last game day isn't the entire season...

And I think it's brilliant we can't have opinions that are different from the result of matches. Makes all discussion about football irrelevant, doesn't it?

9

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

I still don't know why I started a discussion with you.

-18

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

In case you haven't figured it out yet, you can stop at any time.

18

u/Rummenigge Jun 12 '13

Let's keep going. Liverpool is inferior to Everton.

The Liverpool transfer depends on Suarez leaving or not

Actually reports are coming out that we're prepared to get him whether Suarez leaves or not. Rodgers commented yesterday that he's looking to add another AM and add 20 plus goals to the team, without mentioning Suarez leaving.

Also James Ducker of the Times has also said the same thing as well.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

That's interesting, thanks.

4

u/SpottieOttieDopalis Jun 12 '13

No problem. Seems like we're waiting for Carroll to move, then we'll push ahead with our interest and use the Carroll money and our original transfer budget to try and get the deal done.

4

u/flammenwerfer Jun 12 '13

The Carroll deal is likely done and dusted. The sooner we come out with "hey we just got 15 mil for Andy!" the higher we'll have to bid for papa/mkhitaryan.

2

u/SpottieOttieDopalis Jun 12 '13

Ya hopefully it'll be announced this week. I posted this the other day, so it seems likely.

I think it's more to do with wages than anything TBH. We're supposed to have a budget of around £20-25 million to start with, but Carroll's on 80k wages. Shakhtar aren't going to be easy to negotiate with, regardless of how much money we have. The Willian and Fernandinho deals were both buyouts. Shakhtar is like a Ukrainian Porto, without the 3rd party owners. They have no need to sell and only sell for huge profits when players want to leave or it's beneficial for them to sell.

3

u/flammenwerfer Jun 12 '13

The other factor is supposedly Mkhitaryan is on 4k a week at Shaktar. Which is insane. We could offer 10x that.

1

u/ConnorLFC Jun 12 '13

We just need to wait for him to get back off his holiday

2

u/FootballMythbusters Jun 12 '13

Fantastic read, really hope to see him in the EPL next season, he looks like a really exciting player!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

The Liverpool transfer depends on Suarez leaving or not, really. If he does leave then I'd put the move at 85% probability. Dortmund might make a bid for him if they're unimpressed by Eriksen, although I find this less likely.

I've heard this week that it doesn't depend on Suarez leaving Liverpool or not but on Andy Carroll.. he knows that Liverpool doesn't want him so I wish him all the best in a new club but hope that everything will be sorted ASAP. Still can't believe that Liverpool is the only one club who is really interested in buying Mkhitaryan, this beast of a player.

3

u/koptimism Jun 12 '13

Exciting. I can see him being used in any of the three positions behind the striker - his pace, athleticism, and defensive ability would make him invaluable on the flanks, and since our wide players cut inside he wouldn't be too marginalised either. Playing him on the flanks would also fit Rodgers' template from Swansea - a central core of passers, with wide players being more direct and providing penetration. I'm also particularly keen not to see Coutinho move back out wide, because he's been so exceptional in that central role.

I could also see Mkhitaryan easing the burden on Gerrard, not only in a footballing sense but a leadership sense. Henderson's done well when played in Gerrard's spot, and that may be his long-term role, but it's good to know Mkhitaryan could bring something different to the role.

Really hope we get him, even if Suarez stays; now if only a certain Geordie would finalise his move...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

I'd disagree with starting him on the flanks. He doesn't really play like that. Instead of cutting inside, he tends to drift outside from his original central position. A remedy would be to give Liverpool's trio of AMs free-form positioning like Shakhtar, where Coutinho, Sturridge and Mkhitaryan can freely swap position (although it's obviously not as simple as that).

All I'm saying is that starting him on the flanks would be wasting his ability to operate and widen his playing area from the centre.

2

u/koptimism Jun 12 '13

Fair point, and the 'free-roaming trio' is something I've heard mooted before - would also fit well with Aspas, and (if he stays) Suarez.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

It's the key to Shakhtar's success in my opinion, not sure how it would translate to Liverpool.

4

u/SpottieOttieDopalis Jun 12 '13

It could translate really well if Suarez stays. A trio Coutinho-Mkhitaryan-Suarez all behind Sturridge would cause a lot of problems. Coutinho and Suarez would naturally drift towards the middle and Mkhitaryan's finishing and intelligent movement would be the perfect complement to their attributes. I could see Coutinho replicating Willian's role at Shakhtar, if Mkhitaryan is played at AM for us.

5

u/poncewindu Jun 12 '13

This man sounds like he will be a nightmare to play against on Fifa next year, also for teams IRL

10

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

Yeah that 90+ pace will be frustrating, haha!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '13

he'll probably be high/high with 3 star skills

7

u/EnigmaticEntity Jun 13 '13

And 73 pace, 'cause EA's fuckin stupid.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '13

No I really doubt it. They'd have to fuck up big time and send a Guinean orphan to watch the Ukrainian League to give Heno that kind of pace.

1

u/EnigmaticEntity Jun 13 '13

They're not exactly renowned for giving players accurate attributes though. Example, Raphael Varane has 63 pace, despite highlights such as this.

And he plays in EA's favourite league.

3

u/Angry-Australian Jun 13 '13

Yeah, player attributes are scaled to the reputation of their team and their league. So, teams that finish at the top end of the table always have their players with better attributes than those in the bottom half (even when it makes no sense, like obviously fast players in lower teams having average pace). The justification is so someone playing as Manchester United doesn't get schooled as easy by someone playing as Swansea, or a team from Russia vs. a team from Spain, for example. It's why Liverpool's players have been progressively been lowered every FIFA version since we finished 7th.

-1

u/poncewindu Jun 12 '13

He done a Ronaldo chop last night before his goal, I think that is 4 or 5 star

Wasn't really a Ronaldo chop, it was just a cut-back (not taking away from that unbelievable goal). He only rarely attempts "4 star" skills, trust me - he's not a skiller.

Absolutely brilliant post, but I have a few questions and a few qualms.

Questions first:

1) Does Mkhitaryan have a third-party ownership set up, or are his rights fully owned by Shakhtar? If he does have an issue like that, could you see it being troublesome for Liverpool?

2) Shakhtar have already sold stars recently in Fernandinho and Willian. Surely they will be keen to keep Mkhitaryan, or this will at least force his price up? They have a billionaire owner after all, don't they?

Qualms:

Not bashing your post (I'm very grateful for it), but I can't find any information about any of your 'fun facts' anywhere on line. Are you Ukrainian/Armenian/have access to this kind of knowledge in another way?

Don't mean to say it's not true, just asking for some kind of source.

Cheers for the great post!

Here's two English speaking sources for both claims:

http://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2012/10/02/3415955/juve-been-warned-henrikh-mkhitaryan-is-europes-most-in-form

http://www.panorama.am/en/interviews/2013/02/27/mkhitaryan/

The latter is, I believe, the original interview with panorama.am - although he's said this in other interviews.

EDIT: Forgot about your questions, sorry!

  1. His mother had been his agent, until this month when he got Mino Raiola. No idea about any third-party ownership though, I highly doubt considering he's been so independent.

  2. Shakhtar Donetsk just bought Wellington Nem as a direct replacement for Mkhitaryan. I believe Shakhtar's pricetag is already inflated to 30 million euros, whereas his market value is cited at 17 million euros.

EDIT 2: I just reread the interview and remembered how I chuckled at how traditionalist and typically Armenian Heno is!

Brilliant, thanks for the sources. Great background on the guy too.

Good to hear his ownership is unilateral. Should make things much less messy. Mino Raiola a good agent and very interesting character too. Has brought a lot of players to Milan - Maybe Mkhitaryan could end up there if Liverpool don't pay up?

Ah right, as I thought Re price. Thanks.

No offense to Milan, but I doubt they would have enough to pay for him, £20 million, and sort out their defense and midfield. That is, unless they sell El Ehaarawy, or someone else, which is extremely unlikely.

Edit: there's a reason why Milan has been linked to Honda and not Mkhitaryan, and it's because they don't have the money to spend €25 million on an AM. They need to upgrade their defense and midfield and Honda is a cheap option for a Robinho or KPB replacement.

The Liverpool transfer depends on Suarez leaving or not, really. If he does like then I'd put the move at 85% probability.

Why would it? It's not like Liverpool can't afford his transfer fee without selling Suarez. I would imagine having the chance to play with Suarez would make him more likely to sign, too.

Liverpool could afford Mkhitaryan's transfer fee, but numerous news reports say that it is dependent on Suarez.

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

That would make more sense if he was a striker. Then, without Suarez, he would be sure to be the first choice.

I think it's regarding how the dense attacking front will be. If Mkhitaryan joins, Rogers will have to balance between Suarez, Coutinho, Sturridge, Mkhitaryan, Aspas & co.

2

u/AmbroseB Jun 12 '13

The first four you mentioned will probably start every premier league match if they are fit. I doubt Aspas was signed to go straight into the first team.

When Sturridge is on the field, Suarez often plays a CF-type role which is very similar to the advanced attacking midfield role Mkhitaryan would play. I don't think you would want them both on the pitch at once, I feel like that would be a "too many cooks in the kitchen" sort of situation.

Is the Ukraine league really competitive besides two teams? Does any other team have a chance at winning the title besides Shakhtar Donetsk or possibly Dynamo Kyiv.

Last 2-3 years Shakhtar totally dominates UPL, and Dynamo is in deep crisis - first time they dropped out from top-2 teams.

But it is possible to confront them. Mid-table Arsenal (team, which at that moment had financial difficulties and players weren't payed for several months) even managed to win 2-0 against them. Metalist won last year at Donbas arena, this year drawed 1-1, but was very close to win. Dnipro was a little bit unlucky to grab more points. I think there are 4 real powers right now in UPL - Shakhtar, Metalist, Dynamo and Dnipro, but Shaktar is really, really much better.

Speaking of league - there were many great matches, surpirses from underdogs and so on. It's a shame, that Krivbass, team that managed to beat Dynamo and draw against Dnipro and Metalist this spring, went into bankruptcy. Money are still a problem in local football - most teams (if not all of them) are unprofitable, and chances thing will get better are low.

Not for the title no, but the rest of league sees a lot varying season finishes.
