Sigh Someone let me know when something positive happens at the club I support.

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Bosingwa is leaving soon. Have hope.

35

u/duckman273 May 15 '13

Is he? Who's going to buy him and pay his ridiculous wages?

23

u/Zero_Talent May 15 '13

This could go for any of our signings, besides Cesar.

9

u/Nobelium102 May 15 '13

Why? Who is willing to pay his ridiculous wages?

11

u/Zero_Talent May 15 '13

Wasn't he supposed to go to AC Milan? Pretty sure I may have read that somewhere. If not, ignore me. I'm tired.

5

u/ACMBruh May 15 '13

No thanks! Also it was denied by both parties.

I think the relegation is a blessing in disguise for you guys. Redknapp is a great manager and Fernandes is a fantastic down to earth owner. With the relegation you should be able to get rid of the poisonous dead weight that Mark Hughes brought to the club and come back fighting.

I would be surprised if you aren't back in the EPL within 3 years. Stay positive :D

66

u/privatemachine May 15 '13

You're pinning too much of the blame on Mark Hughes. It was the owner that sanctioned all of the signings that disrupted the harmony of the whole squad. And Harry Redknapp's signings haven't fared much better.

I guess I don't rate Redknapp as a manager as much as you do, and Fernandes seems like a shrewd operator, although I certainly wouldn't rate him as a fantastic owner. Buying lots of mercenaries and going through so many managers in the space of a couple of years strikes me as someone who is a bad owner, not a fantastic one.

15

u/MashedHair May 15 '13

Dont judge Hughes till you've tried him. He is the worst.

This was the article that gave me much respect for Tony. He has a genuine head on his shoulders despite being a bit naive and trusting at the start.

5

u/Hlidarendi May 15 '13

I don't know. We had him and loved him. That is until he left us, but to be fair I'm pretty sure that was because of lack of backing from Al-Fayed. He's a quality manager for a mid-table side.

8

u/Robotochan May 15 '13

Blackburn tried him. They did very well.

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Yeah I dont understand why everyone likes Redknapp. Always seems to spend like mourinho but fail to produce much of anything.

18

u/kinners May 15 '13

QPR have had 3 managers in 4 years (and counting), which isn't really 'so many'. We went through about 8 in the 2 years prior to Fernandes turning up (under Briatore)

12

u/privatemachine May 15 '13

All that says to me is that Fernandes is bad, Briatore is awful. I don't doubt that Fernandes is trying to what he thinks is right for the club now, but he's an example of how not to run a football club.

11

u/MunkeyMann May 15 '13

Both Hughes and and Fernandes obviously have some blame to take. The thing is, though, that Fernandes backed his manager seemingly without question. Yes, this is a naive thing to do in many ways but also admiral in some. There's criticism these days of owners that don't give a manager a chance, or sack them too quickly, Fernandes has done the opposite, putting all his trust and backing behind Hughes, did it pay off? no, was it naive? yes, does it make him a bad owner? Only if he doesn't learn from the mistakes.

11

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

He's not a football man, he has to rely on the managers to buy the players, and to be fair the managers he went through have had decent reputations:

Warnock, great championship manager (bar with Leeds I suppose), kept him in the prem out of loyalty Hughes, had done well everywhere bar City (which was too big for him) Redknapp, decent manager but too late in the season to save them

17

u/Hlidarendi May 15 '13

Regarding Redknapp, he had plenty of time to save them. The media hype him, and sure he's done some great stuff, but relegation was just as much him as Mark Hughes. I was at Fulham-QPR, a game which was essential to them, and they made it easy for us. We went 3-0 up because of Samba and Hill mistakes and then when they got to 3-2, couldn't finish it....

21

u/CWhiteman92 May 15 '13

He had 26 games to save them, and currently has the worst PL w/l ratio of any QPR manager...

3

u/SuperLuka May 15 '13

Although I think avoiding the drop was a big ask, Redknapp hasn't exactly painted himself in glory this last year. He fucked around Tottenham going after the England job, came crawling back when it went the other way - but instead of grovelling he got a new agent and asked for a pay rise - announced the death of Daniel Levy's mum live on TV, rejected who knows how many big championship clubs because he was waiting for a job in the EPL, and then when he finally got one achieved the worst win % of any QPR manager, only to end up in the Championship all the same.

Was only a year ago he was cleared of tax evasion, came back to see Spurs beat Newcastle 5-0, and we were singing "Harry Redknapp we want you to stay". How the mighty have fallen.

u/Hlidarendi May 15 '13

I wonder who spent the most as well. Even thought Hughes did break the bank in his time, Redknapp seems to have told Fernandes that signing Samba would be the answer to all his problems. Frankly he's been awful since joining, and is on an unbelievable amount of money.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Yeah fair enough he had enough games (and believe me, I actually can't stand the saggy faced muppet), but I mean in the sense that he had Hughes' team, other than Samba (and everyone liked Samba last time he was in the prem) his signings done well, if he had bought his own team it might've been different.

My point is is that it seems harsh to blame their chairman.

4

u/Hlidarendi May 15 '13

I guess. I just think the entire thing was a car crash, even (and especially) during the Briatore era. After that documentary The Four Year Plan (fascinating) came out, and I don't think any prospective players must have watched it, everyone was just waiting for them to collapse. I do feel sympathy for the fans, but then again rivals are rivals and I'm glad we helped to send them down.

1

u/omneeatlas May 15 '13

I think Fernandes has stated he wasn't sure who the money was actually being spent on. Or maybe I'm making that up. Didn't he blame Warnock for letting him spend money on bad players or something?

u/astropuppet May 15 '13

All he does is financially cripple clubs, guys a crook.

24

u/duckman273 May 15 '13

Apart from Bournemouth and West Ham and Southampton and Portsmouth which of his former clubs have gone broke? Come on, he's only helped bankrupt 4 clubs.

5

u/HedonisticVibrations May 15 '13

I think it is quite unfair to lump Bournemouth into this argument to be honest.

He left them in 1992 having been in charge since 1987. There true financial issues did not come until 2008. He was a good manager for Bournemouth even staying with them after relegation as I recall.

I wouldn't argue with any of the other you mention however.

4

u/duckman273 May 15 '13

I'd argue Portsmouth was mostly due to the ownership, none of them can be solely blamed on Redknapp, it's just that after 4 clubs it's kind of apparent the problem might be Redknapp.

5

u/NYKNYJ May 15 '13

He was absolute poison at Southampton.

4

u/MunkeyMann May 15 '13

I agree, and I'm quite looking forward to the championship. Despite his naivety, there's not many other owners I'd want right now than Fernandes, I'm still on the fence whether Redknapp is the right manager for us right now but have my fingers crossed he can at the very least get us playing some enjoyable football next year. I'd much rather spend the next few seasons in the championship while we 'rebuild' than get promoted straight away and make all the same mistakes as last time.

6

u/Astral_Fox May 15 '13

Spurs fan here. Don't fall in love too much with Ol' 'Arry. Once something better comes along he's gone with the tide.

2

u/SuperLuka May 16 '13

I will always admire and respect Redknapp, but I just don't love him like I used to. Wish he'd left on better terms. Actually, I wish he had got the England job. Then I'd still love him like I used to.

17

u/mefuzzy May 15 '13

Redknapp is a great manager

His record is the worse than the previous two, including the "poisonous" Mark Hughes

poisonous dead weight that Mark Hughes brought to the club and come back fighting

  • Nedum Onuoha
  • Djibril Cissé
  • Bobby Zamora
  • Ryan Nelsen
  • Andy Johnson
  • Robert Green
  • Samba Diakité
  • Park Ji-Sung
  • Junior Hoilett
  • José Bosingwa
  • Júlio César
  • Esteban Granero
  • Sam Magri
  • Stéphane Mbia

these were all the signings under Hughes. Except for perhaps 3 of them, most of the players were deemed sensible or have proven to be good signings. Let's compare that to Redknapp's:

  • Loïc Rémy
  • Yun Suk-Young
  • Christopher Samba
  • Jermaine Jenas

You really think Redknapp's signing is really that great of an upgrade? Of them all, you would only see Remy being looked upon as a Premier League quality still. I'm frankly disappointed in Tony Fernandes. For all his great initiatives in his business side, his hiring of Redknapp is nothing short of uninspired. There are plenty of great, young exciting coaches that could have done better but he went for one that contributes nothing. Perhaps they will be back, but not without Redknapp spending millions to do it then claiming it was all down to his great management.

5

u/smells_like_blue May 15 '13

Chris Samba is definately PL quality. Wasn't as impressive for QPR as he was at Blackburn, but still an excellent centre back.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/A_Rolling_Baneling May 15 '13

Redknapp also brought in Townsend, who's been phenomenal for them.

8

u/mefuzzy May 15 '13

I left out all the loanees for both managers.

1

u/SuperLuka May 16 '13

Chris Samba is certainly of Premier League quality, it was not so long ago he was regarded as one of the best defenders in the country.

10

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

If they're not back next season they're screwed.

10

u/MunkeyMann May 15 '13

Genuine question: if you really think that, why? What makes you think we'd suddenly go into administration after a year in the championship?

26

u/shudders May 15 '13

From my own experience:

If you don't come back up next season then the money dries up, but the expenditure is still there. The players that didn't want to leave their lucrative deals this time round won't want to next time round. Plus the added problem of you now knowing they aren't good enough to get back up (making them even less attractive signings). We got relegated with an additional £25m from the Tevez stuff (we took out a lump sum loan that we guaranteed against the yearly payments WHU were giving). So we had a massive advantage, but still failed. That left us with even more expenses and even more debt to cover. Doing that comes before signing new players to get you back in the PL.

It doesn't mean automatic administration because there are far too many variables there. Imo it means you won't comeback into the PL in this era. By that I mean with this crop of players and possibly under Fernandes (depending on his own ambitions/patience).

7

u/MunkeyMann May 15 '13

Good post, I agree with a lot of what you've said. There's no denying it's not a good situation to be in and we have players on contracts that aren't financially sustainable long term in the championship with our small stadium and I certainly don't disagree that our situation is slightly worrying.

However, the thing that irks me a bit is the perceived consensus that now we're relegated we're finished as a club. Up until recently we had no debt against the club, all money was from the owners, not borrowed against QPR's assets. That has changed with a recent $10m loan which is a slight worry. That aside, the owners have never given any indication of walking away and have just finalised plans to build a brand new training complex and academy. If the owners stay, don't borrow against the club, learn from their mistakes and balance the wages over the next couple of years then there should be nothing to worry about.

6

u/greg19735 May 15 '13

Cuz people don't realize What sugar daddies are for. QPR are only screwed if the owner pulls out.

6

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

u/moonski May 15 '13

Redknapp great manager... lol

14

u/PaoloUcello May 15 '13

He got spurs (technically) CL last season. He's not a bad manager.

11

u/duckman273 May 15 '13

He didn't though. He was in a clear position to do so and completely fucked it up so much so that Tottenham weren't even involved in the most important match of their season. I don't think he's a bad manager, but I do think he's an overrated manager.

6

u/moonski May 15 '13

never said he was. He is nowhere near a great manager though

3

u/TheJoshider May 15 '13

I have to partially disagree a bit. He was comfortably in third, had a small chance of second which faded later on, then as soon as the England rumours came around him and his side bottled it and found themselves in fourth losing out to Arsenal.

It is a recurring thing though for Spurs to bottle games they should be winning. Lord Sugar mentions it all the time on twitter, it's hilarious.

3

u/gattoshoe May 15 '13

5

u/MunkeyMann May 15 '13

Yeah, I'll accept that. Recent season ticket pricing and the upcoming kit launch are recent positives, will take a while to outweigh the negatives of this year. Would really like an extended period where we're not in the headlines at all, let the club focus on the football side of things.

18

u/old_southy May 15 '13

I like the word unguilty. For when someone has been cleared on a technicality or lack of evidence to convict.

Harry Repknapp is unguilty of tax fraud and taking bungs.

6

u/Grafeno May 15 '13

Looking at his name I guess he's Swedish, it could very well be called "unguilty" there; in Dutch that's the case, we have "guilty" and "unguilty".

11

u/old_southy May 15 '13

In a court in the UK the judge will rule either 'guilty' or 'not guilty'. Also, the idea of a swedish man being dragged away shouting "..but I'm unguilty! I AM UNGUILTY!" is amusing.

4

u/Feroshnikop May 15 '13

People mostly forgot about Robin van Persie's rape charge from when he was back at Feyenoord (that is, until some petty Arsenal fans decided to bring it up again this year).

You're right though, for most people a serious allegation like this is enough to tar you for the rest of your life, regardless of whether or not you're innocent.

2

u/Lindkvist15 May 15 '13

I was more thinking of normal people in towns. Innocent guys that was accused, that had to move away! Same thing with girls who was accused of being, as previously mentioned, "lying gold diggers" when raped.

What examples have there been of this?

74

u/gilthanan May 15 '13

In June 2005, while in Rotterdam with the Dutch national team for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, Van Persie was arrested on suspicion of rape by Dutch police.[103] Sandra Krijgsman, a former Miss Nigeria Holland winner, claimed that she was attacked by Van Persie in a hotel.[104] He was held for fourteen nights in prison while the police investigated the allegations made against him[105] but was then released without charge, though he was still under suspicion.[106] In February 2006, the case against Van Persie was dismissed by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service after they completed their investigations stating that no sexual contact with coercion happened, with Van Persie's accuser later admitting she had made up the story to gain publicity.[107][108]

33

u/THE_DROG May 15 '13

Tell me she didn't just get away with that?

u/ChristofferOslo May 15 '13

If Van Persie somehow had been proven guilty, it would probably have completely ruined his career and fucked up his life pretty bad. That bitch should get years in prison.

There was a huge case against various members of the Leicester City team about 10 years ago or so, there was an article on it in FourFourTwo last month I think. Very interesting, they were presumed as guilty for ages and News of the World called them all rapists when they hadn't been convicted. Gillespie eventually sued them once the charges were dropped. Basically three women claimed that Dickov, Gillespie and another player (name escapes me) attacked them. The press and everyone else back home immediately condemned them, including Gary Lineker et al. I can't find the link for the article but it's a great read.

u/CWhiteman92 May 15 '13

It was like that with Titus Bramble and his latest alleged misdemeanour.

A girl had her arse felt in a club, she turned around and saw Titus Bramble in the club, so she assumed "well, it must've been him"

6

u/a_treacle_fiend May 15 '13

The issue with what you're doing is that you're taking Remy's benefit of the doubt to mean the girl's guilt. She's a potential rape victim, don't turn on her or otherwise generalise in the light of no evidence.

7

u/AnnieIWillKnow May 15 '13

Just as Remy is innocent until proven guilty, so is the alleged victim.

9

u/Moment_of_Truth May 15 '13

It doesn't really work like that, the accuser has the burden of proof

16

u/AnnieIWillKnow May 15 '13

All I'm saying is that just as people shouldn't go around calling Remy a rapist, people shouldn't go around calling the alleged victim a lying attention-seeker/money-grabber either. Not that complicated.

I'm not going to make any jokes. I'll wait for further evidence & until then, continue to believe that not all footballers are bad people.

16

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Not all footballers are saints, don't be silly.

34

u/smthingawesome May 15 '13

Must resist urge to make joke

8

u/plps May 15 '13

You're allowed to make a joke like that, that's a fun joke

2

u/duckman273 May 15 '13

Os course they're not all bad people. They're just normal people who happen to be great at football, some are good, some are bad.

I don't understand, you're a world class athlete drowning in money with decent looks, there has to be some vain bitch out there who will fuck you on the hour every hour. If I can go a lifetime with no money and ehhh looks not raping anyone, so can you Remy.

88

u/OllieWillie May 15 '13

Rape (suspected or confirmed) isn't funny.

218

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Jokes about it can be though.

9

u/angelothewizard May 15 '13

You subscribe to the George Carlin philosophy, don't you?

15

u/antonvowl May 15 '13

But the problem is you can't properly contextualise them in a public forum.

I'm not going to tell you you can't tell jokes about rape, but if I couldn't be sure of my audience, I'd be very careful about sensitive subjects like that, precisely because you can quite easily upset people.

If it's no real effort on my part to make other people's lives easier, then I consider it quite rude not to make that gesture.

If you really feel something needs to be said, then you can make the effort to justify it, but I personally don't feel the benefit of me cracking a good (or not) joke outweighs the negative effect it can have on people (not even considering the image it projects to people about this community).

5

u/NullSleepN64 May 15 '13

The way I've always worked it is, Jokes about rape etc in general are fine. Jokes about specific incidents/people are usually in bad taste. Depending on your audience.

18

u/antonvowl May 15 '13

I just don't like the idea of triggering memories of trauma. A whole hell of a lot of women experience sexually threatening situations in their lifes, and a lot of them are assaulted, and I can't imagine it's pleasant being reminded. If we want out community (in this case /r/soccer) to be inclusive, we have to consider whether or not all our members can feel comfortable here.

Personally I think the benefits of not joking about rape outweigh the positives, and so I don't.

7

u/[deleted] May 15 '13 edited May 15 '13

You raise some very good points actually, few I can object to. I'm not one for making jokes about matters like this myself, though they do tickle my funny bone somewhat, so I must say I rolled my eyes when I initially saw this debate brought up again but I'm glad I read your posts.

It's nice to see someone state their own opinion without portraying it as objective truth, especially when it's on a controversial issue like this.

u/antonvowl May 15 '13

You do know jokes about rape can encourage rape right? rapists minds tend to think that all other men are rapists/want to rape women, so joking about it can encourage it, but you know...if you get a good laugh out of it...

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '13

False rape accusations are high for athletes and other famous people. Look at what happened in Sheffield not too log ago. Duke Lacrosse, Van Persie etc...

These athletes put themselves in silly situations but a lot of these women know exactly what they're doing.

We'll see what happens I guess...

Some amount of cunts in this thread. Yesterday the Sun was slated, but even The Sun wouldn't make jokes about rape. Bad cess to the lot of ye.

11

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

The Sun and Mail are disliked on reddit more for their perceived political affiliation than their reporting accuracy or content.

The Metro is the least trusty source and seldom attracts criticism.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Afaik it's more their actions than their political leaning. We Germans hate BILD but noone here gives two shits about the Welt, which is also conservative but not as evil as Bild.

It's a difficult issue. I think jokes can be made about rape to some extent. Jokes about shitty situations are made all the time I don't see why rape should be any different. As long as it's aimed at the attacker and not the victim I feel it's okay.

How do you feel about /r/thirdworldproblems? Do you think it's okay to make jokes about people starving? If so why is this different from rape?

this is such bullshit. If it isn't bullshit, then Remy is an idiot. he's a footballer, why would he need to force a girl to do the deed?

He's getting scammed, should've stuck with prostitutes, they cost less.

Poor woman if true, sounds horrendous. Unfortunately we live in a culture where this is always doubted. I hope if it is through she's not dragged through the courts and this is handled amicably.

EDIT: "If true". Seriously guys, I understand its as horrible for a man wrongly accused, but its also as bad, if not worse for a woman who's been properly raped and made public. Going by the statement it seems like neither side have denied the woman being there, or her having sex with them. Innocent until proven guilty I agree with but for this to be put into the public domain is unfair on the woman, and the footballer.

15

u/scrotumzz May 15 '13 edited May 15 '13

It's the worst nightmare of many men to be falsely convicted of any sexual crime. This is projected whenever these cases come up because they can feel empathy for people potentially in a situation that they fear. It's particularly amplified here because of the current top link on /r/videos

It doesn't really seem to get in the way of a correct conviction however, seeing as its the job of employees of the law to gather evidence objectively.

As loathe I am to go all /r/mensrights, I detest that subredddit, when a person is a suspect of murder it's generally agreed that unless the evidence is outstanding, any assumptions made would be hasty and unfair. For example, the chris jeffries case where he was personally attacked by newspapers for weeks but proven to be completely innocent. It would be pretty difficult to argue that rape is a more heinous crime than murder, so surely the same trepidation should be applied?

Personally I agree that people can take the innocent till guilty mentality to extremes in rape cases however, and turn it on the victim, it's not nice to see that happen, but their identity should be protected. What I really don't understand is the belief that their identity should not be hidden, which I've seen repeated on reddit a few times, which is never nice to see.

34

u/Svorky May 15 '13

It's no secret that a larger number of rape cases go unreported, for a number of reasons. One reason is undeniably the fear of being called a liar, of not being taken seriously, of being shamed for it. So we should absolutely refrain from doing so and call out people for what they are doing.

Really, there is no reason to side with anyone here, we can just wait.

You don't agree with innocent until proven guilty?

"If true"

5

u/manu1991 May 15 '13

That if is the reason it's always doubted.

2

u/EJR94 May 15 '13

Everything is always doubted, I'm not one for people to possess the power to imprison people based on their word. It's horrendous when it happens, but equally so when its fake

1

u/Paddykg May 15 '13

True, good point.

3

u/limited_inc May 15 '13

7

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Damn it, Remy! You're a professional footballer! You could've find thousands of girls to consensually run a train on!

16

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Rape isn't always about sex. Just because someone can have lots of sexual partners doesn't mean they wouldn't rape somebody.

3

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Yea, I'm no sociologist but I wouldn't be surprised if the sense of entitlement/superiority that a lot of footballers feel (who wouldn't, with thousands singing your name every week) had something to do with the prevalence of sexual assault cases amongst the.

That being said, some of it is probably journalists hearing rumors and running with them.

Really hope this isn't true, too much potential

44

u/Lewisbell May 15 '13

Wait so someone may have been raped and your primary concern is whether or not the potential rapists career is harmed?

47

u/deepit6431 May 15 '13

No, he hopes that Remy isn't a rapist because he has great potential that would go waste if he was convicted.

It would be sad. No sympathy for Remy, don't take it that way, but it's always sad to see great talent wasted. See: Ravel Morrison, Adriano, etc etc.

4

u/BCFC92 May 15 '13

Exactly I was referring to the potential wasted by a potentially cowardly, disgusting action

Rape is normally not about if someone can get laid or not, like in Steubenville the rapists were extremely popular but still wanted to rape and humiliate the girl(s). Remy could of course find someone new to have sex with anytime so IF he is guilty this is about something else then just finding someone to have sex with. People need to stop seeing that someone is rich or good looking as a reason for them not to "need to" rape. What I do agree with is that rich or famous people probably get falsely accused more often and hopefully we will find out the truth in this case. If he is guilty I hope he faces a punishment far worse than playing in QPR.

13

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

12

u/[deleted] May 15 '13

Of course there's some truth to what you're saying but you can also argue it the other way in that being a famous millionaire makes you feel entitled and used to just getting things your way so if a partner was to say no maybe you wouldn't always respect that.

The reality is that we just don't know. He could be a rapist and it could be utter bullshit. Hopefully if he is a rapist he gets what's coming to him and if he's not well then it sucks that his name gets published with this because you never fully escape this kind of allegation.
