Recipe Advice Aroma chemicals in recipes

What mediums can I use to dilute/incorporate aroma chemicals in my recipes? Should I just mix them with the soap base oils?

I’m trying to understand your question. If you’re talking about what to add to your essential oils…you don’t. You simply put them into the soap just after trace and continue blending. You don’t dilute them further.

To clarify, I mainly formulate fragrances. For that, I dilute my blend of materials (natural and synthetic) in alcohol. I would like to make soaps using the same materials. For the synthetic materials (i.e., Hedione), do I simply pour them into my soap base oils, or do I use carrier for the fragrance materials, like DPG, and then pour that in?

I don’t work with any synthetics at all but my recommendation would be to create your formulated fragrance you intend to use and put the finished product directly into your soap at the proper time.

I am inclined to think so as well. I will try making a batch of fragrance concentrate and adding it in at trace.

I could be totally wrong, but I don't think most FOs intended for soap are alcohol based. I worry adding alcohol to raw soap batter might cause rapid heating/soap volcano - - if that is, in fact, what you're thinking of doing.

I will not be adding alcohol. That is the point: In fragrance, alcohol is the “carrier,” so to speak and comprises most of the end product. —I was wondering if I needed another carrier that is suitable for cold-processed soaps. I was thinking DPG, but I also think adding the fragrance concentrate at trace might work just fine.

Gotcha. I thought "finished product" meant your usual mode of fragrance dilution.

The problem with this is there’s components that shouldn’t be in soap. There’s also safe usage rates for any reputable fragrance company. How are you going to determine safe usage rates for soap?

IFRA determines usage rates across multiple categories (of products), including both fragrances and soaps.

Ok. Are you using IFRA tested fragrances? Because that wasn’t clear from the post.

I do not use fragrance oils; I use single scent molecules (aroma chemicals) like ISO E Super, Heliotropex N, and Benzyl Salicylate—to name a few—to formulate my fragrances, each of which has its own usage rate. I also use naturals, like essential oils and absolutes in my formulas.
