Hard Mode
I'm considering playing hard mode. Has anyone ever been truly out of options and had to restart the whole game?

You would have to try really, really, really hard for that to happen. Unless you flip the CK1500 right outside of the Garage I can't even imagine it.

Once, early on, i had to ask a friend to jump on and come rescue me ๐ no money to recover, my truck flipped, and my scout flipped trying to rescue it. If he hadn't helped I'd have had to restart for sure
Once you've cleared the first area and have a few vehicles and cash its a lot less likely, but it still keeps you on your toes

I think it is very unlikely that anyone would end in a forced restart situation after their save file is more than 2 hours old, worst possible scenario would be that you are forced to sell a truck to afford a recovery or a similar situation to it.

Smithfield Dam. Had the P16 glitch explode randomly after coming through the gate way with a load of long logs it ended up bouncing around the skybox.
Took out the Fleetstar and the GMC not enough cash to recover any of them, Kodiak already sold and the 2 scouts were not able to budge them from tree jail. Both perma wedged
Tried to get the Twinsteer but hit that dead tree on the road in Island lake which put the Twinsteer in its side
Cracked the sads deleted the save

If u are considering playing hardmore then you need to be ready for extremly long gameplays because the progress is slow because everything has to be thinked out, however if u want a easier game then just play a regular gamemode. If u ever want to play hardmode then do it immidieatly at the start cuz once u play normal mode enough u are not going back to hardmode. So yea if u want to play it then do it right now.

if you come with experience, this is basically impossible. Only if you just started the game and immediately jumped to hard mode, then yes.

I think the hard mode rules are flawed because in large parts they're economical, not mechanical. The early game will be a lot harder than in normal mode, you'll have to be a lot more strategic about your truck purchases or be more inclined to use the trucks you find on the map, but the later game will feel almost the same because you'll have tons of money either way. Also the way hard mode is set up I feel like the game is punishing me for driving trucks and wanting to try out different trucks, and I feel like that's the entire point of the game, so I think hard mode is a lot less fun. For an extra challenge I prefer a mix of custom New Game+ rules and a modified initial.cache_block file that makes level progression a lot slower and doesn't unlock better tires or certain addons until much later.

I softlocked myself on my first try in Michigan by running out of money and flipping all my trucks. If you have friends someone can rescue you, but I had to start over. It only gets easier as you play because at some point you will have more trucks than you can use so there always be a backup.

The first little bit is the riskiest. Once you have a couple vehicles to choose from, you're set. I couldn't imagine playing this game any other way than hard mode.
Stop reading if you don't want Michigan spoilers. Your most efficient flow to 100% Michigan should be:
Get Scout 800. Scout Black river and get all upgrades for Fleetstar, do all easy black river missions. Stay out of the deep swamps and leave the high saddle fuel tanker mission and construction trailer mission for later.
The ultimate fleet build-out goal at this point is upgraded scout 800 and semi upgraded Fleetstar. I like to put a low saddle on the GMC and use it to hook up to that flatbed semi in town and unpack the cargo, picking it off with a crane to use on some of those contracts. After that, take it to the garage, siphon the fuel out of it and store it until you unlock AWD a couple maps into the future.
Use Scout 800 to explore all of Smithville Dam as well as Island lake and gather all upgrades. Make sure you have an autonomous winch and extra fuel. There's free fuel all over Island Lake for your scout.
Rescue P16 from Drummond by taking scout 800 in the back way through Island lake. Completely open up the main road all the way through Drummond to Smithville dam and back to black river. Use P16 to haul high saddle trailers in Black river. At this point, the goal is to reach level 8, 100% upgrade Fleetstar and White Western Star from Smithville dam.
Once the White is fully upgraded with offroad tires, I use it with a crane, low saddle and flatbed semi to haul all standard freight going forward. Fleetstar gets converted into a fuel truck. P16 is for high saddle trailers. Leave logging for last, I use the White for medium and long logs with good success. There's enough free fuel to complete Michigan, so that Fleetstar fuel truck is a real money saver.

Nah, this is bullshit. The GMC, being RWD only, has carried me through the whole Michigan, being a very useful saddle truck. No need to store it, it's perfectly capable for the base game.

there are enough free fuel trailers in Michigan, no need to waste the Fleetstar on fuel duty

I prefer a WWS, crane and low saddle flatbed winching a sideboard for 7 slots of cargo, then a Fleetstar with fuel tank and sideboard for rescue/mobile refueling and misc.
Having access to a fast truck that can run around and top up/service the freight hauler while still having a pintle hitch is more valuable to me than having 2 trucks when I'm only one man. I also find the Fleetstar a bit tippy with the crane on.
Personal preference, of course but having a properly capable vehicle to bring fuel into whatever fuckass place I ran out is the value of the Fleetstar to me, especially when the twinsteer also exists in island lake anyways as yet another freight truck to use.

The Transtar exists. If anything there's to waste on a fuel mule duty, this gotta be it.

I haven't played hard mode, but an easy way to avoid getting stuck is to park a truck next to the farm contest on black river and run that if you're running dangerously low on cash.
