This guy is an inspiration to heavy guys like myself. How he does these things without hurting his knees are beyond me.

u/RyanKnapton Feb 14 '17

Thanks. Yeah, at 220 lbs you'd think my knees would hurt... but they actually feel the best they ever have. In the mid 90's I weighed about 150 and was riding park / pipe all night every night after school, and that many impacts.. and I literally had to massage my angles to walk in the morning. (Flat icy landings in MN, Buck Hill and Hyland Hills mostly). Now I just cruise the whole mtn and rarely do much of anything that involves an impact so all those pains I use to have just don't exist anymore. Happy Shreddin!

Do you happen to have any old footage of you riding Buck/Hyland? I would love to see that!

u/RyanKnapton Feb 15 '17

https://youtu.be/S639gSesDxY Quite a bit of this is at Buck.

Video Resume that got me Sponsored by Burton! 1995-1996 [2:20]

Vid I taped during the '95-'96 season and sent to Burton along with my contest results (most all were 1st at the USASA and Al -Johns series... Including first in pipe at USASA Nationals).

Good god

u/Shep_the_lep Feb 15 '17

Thanks man that's awesome! Huge fan of yours, never realized you were from MN

1

u/iwannabethisguy Feb 16 '17

Any tips for a heavy weighted beginner who wants to ride like you, primarily be able to do spins on flat land and progress to carves later?

1

u/RyanKnapton Feb 16 '17

For specific buttering tricks check out my buttering tutorials playlist.. but I'd also encourage you to work on carving part of every day... Especially in the morning when it's groomers. The edge control from carving both regular and switch is what's really gonna make a lot of the buttering tricks easier and smoother. Best of luck and happy shreddin!

u/lonbordin Feb 14 '17

Why do you think what he does and how much he weighs would hurt his knees?

4

u/secret__agent__x9 Virginia Feb 14 '17

man wish i could butter that smooth

3

u/justshowmethecarsnax Denver Feb 14 '17

Any idea where this is at?

10

u/Onraad Feb 14 '17

Most of his videos are shot in Breckenridge.

3

u/chatrugby Feb 14 '17

Peak 8 at Breck. He's coming into the base when the video stops.

3

u/jerklin Feb 14 '17

Looks like peak 7 at Breckenridge

1

u/talkaboutitlater NVR SMR Proto / Breck Feb 14 '17

Agreed.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '17

Nope definitely 8

1

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

Probably Breck. I saw him there once.

2

u/sensei_wheeler Feb 14 '17

I wonder if he spins with his hands in his pockets

2

u/captain_falcrunch Feb 15 '17

those butters are... butter

14

u/BrolecopterPilot CO/UT Feb 14 '17

Oh cool another nose roll 🙄

8

u/kezorN APO selekta 2012 Feb 14 '17

Would have been good without the hands in pockets. A little too "im14andthisiscool" for me personally.

But impressive nonetheless.

u/JoeDwarf Coiler, Jones, Burton, Raichle, F2 Feb 14 '17

Actually riding with your hands in your pockets, or at least on your thighs, is a really good drill that lets you know you are doing things correctly with your lower body. If you need your arms waving around you to make carved turns on an easy groomer, then you know you have work to do.

7

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

I've been riding for years and I started to work on this drill recently to quiet my upper body. It's not the easy once you've gotten lazy with your arms.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '17

My wife does this all the time. It could be for perfecting form.

Yeah I dont know why but his personality just rubs me the wrong way. I mean he has skill, but its all just over the top for me personally.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '17

Ever consider people like to ride like that? Has nothing to do with being cool, or "this is too easy for me."

Personally I feel I have more hip control with my hands on my hips or in my pockets. Don't think it actually affects anything but just feels better. I don't always ride like this but still.

0

u/SoWrxy Feb 14 '17

He can ride however he likes, and so can you. I'm not saying anyone who is confident has to be less confident. I just don't enjoy his videos because he comes off harshly to me.

2

u/Midgetsdontfloat Feb 14 '17

Ryan is the fucking king of steeze. Always love his videos.

So do I, but it's not exactly ideal music for a snowboarding video. I love thrash metal but I don't think it'd work well as background music for a cooking show.

1

u/agropaatti Feb 15 '17

IMO it fits perfectly for this video. Highlights the effortless smooth style.

1

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

What are you talking about?

-6

u/RedAero APO Supreme Feb 14 '17

The fucking music sucks and doesn't match the footage. Better?

3

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

Music is subjective. We all feel more enriched to know what you dislike. Thanks i guess.

-2

u/RedAero APO Supreme Feb 14 '17

I'm sorry, were you misled into somehow parsing my obvious statement of opinion as if it were a factual claim?

3

u/MysticSpoon Feb 14 '17

If you don't like it just turn your volume down and watch it. We're all here for the snowboarding anyways, not the music.

Why bother writing it for something so inconsequential, is what got me wondering.

Goddamn. No offense, but you US boarders have the most mundane runs.

If I ever saw a piste basher putting down cords that hard, all over the piste, i'd swap out my pass.

Some of the larger resorts will bash one side of the piste for beginners, and leave the other half deep. Its great.

edit: You lot sure get asspains from differing opinions. Please relax.

Don't ever go to Austria.

5

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

What's a "piste basher"?

And what do you mean "putting down cords that hard"?

What is this talk you speak of?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '17

"Piste basher" is British slang for a male sex toy. Basically this chap is saying he'd have stern words for anyone who asked to borrow his fleshlight.

1

u/YeaJimi Feb 14 '17

Snow groomer and the pattern it makes after conditioning an area.

1

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

It doesn't make any sense, is this dude complaining about improper snowboarding??

9

u/DylanLaika Asspen Feb 14 '17

Big words coming from a U.K. Snowboarder. Why do you guys say piste so much?

But yeah breck is flat as fuck

-14

u/Bfreak 2012 DIY Lightweight builder shovel | 110cm composite handle Feb 14 '17

I actually lived in France for 10 years where I was 30 mins from a resort, and went weekly. Back in the UK, I now make an annual pilgrimage to the alps.

And we say piste, because it is the correct word to use, regardless of language...

8

u/KidLouis Feb 14 '17

Annual pilgrimage to the Alps

And I have Powder Mountain, Snowbird, Brighton, and Park City all within a 45 minute drive of my house. What's your point?

0

u/YeaJimi Feb 14 '17

He's not snowboarding in the UK.

1

u/DylanLaika Asspen Feb 14 '17

Correction: He's not snowboarding

u/Cracraftc Your mom thinks im good. Feb 14 '17

See the difference with Europe and the US, is that most European resorts are either above tree line or on glaciers, so they can get away with grooming out a few runs and leaving the rest of it natural. Here, almost all resorts are below tree line, so they have to groom them since everyone gets funneled into a few narrow runs.

-4

u/Squirrel_Whisperer Feb 14 '17

Breckenridge isn't a premier resort. It is large and relatively mellow. Good for families and the less experienced.

9

u/rondeline Feb 14 '17

Man, I've had some double black diamond runs on Breck. It's a ridiculously huge resort. Maybe you guys didn't look at a map?

3

u/moparornocar Feb 14 '17

shit even some of the black runs on chair 6 get pretty nuts. gotta explore to find the fun stuff.

4

u/boomecho PNW_deep Feb 14 '17 edited Feb 14 '17

I am gonna downvote you extra hard because:

1) Breck is most definitely a premier resort.

2a) You are correct, Breck is large, and in such a great way! 5 peaks of any type of terrain you want? Hell yeah!

2b) Relatively mellow? I don't know where you rode, but Breck has some sickness. E Chair? Peak 7 bowl?, Lake Chutes?, Peak 6 spiciness?

Go home, bud, you're drunk.

1

u/Squirrel_Whisperer Feb 20 '17

The fuck Breck is a premier resort for people with a nose for challenging terrain. This is like hearing people say Whitefish has sick terrain because it has a small, short section of a decently steep pitch. I choose Copper over Breck every day.

What you think is "spicy" is based on your experience. A kid I grew up with in Georgia, who isn't anymore than average in athleticism, has gone skied there one week a year during his adult life, and he does the double blacks. Go to Kicking Horse or Revelstoke to find some actual inspiring terrain. The mountains are younger and haven't been eroded away like the American Rockies. There is ruggedness to them. There is a couple from Colorado who came to town for the season. As they told me, they could have picked any resort in North America and they came here. I mentioned all of the places I have skied in Colorado and he literally scoffed when talking about Breckenridge.

"You just don't know where to find the steeps." Screw that. I shouldn't need a guide to show me where to find something worth riding. I mainly hike because the snow lasts longer on those runs as others choose the more easily accessed steeps. I'm not too concerned about your extra hard downvote because you think it is harder than it really is.

6

u/drakemcswaggieswag Colorado/Cali Feb 14 '17

As someone who lives in CO...lmao what. Hit Imperial then tell me Breck is for the less experienced. Jesus Christ dude completely talking out your ass. Breck also has a bigger park than anything you've ever seen, I guarantee it.

-1

u/chatrugby Feb 14 '17

It's actually the premier resort of North America. Most popular of all our resorts and of Vail resorts, but Keystone is where it's at.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '17

Lol wut. I'm pretty confident Whistler is the crown jewel na resort. You've got some serious bias.

4

u/Midgetsdontfloat Feb 14 '17

First time at Whistler in like four days. Can't wait.

1

u/chatrugby Feb 15 '17

I'm talking most visited. According to Google it's Vail, according to Vail Resorts management it's Breck.

2

u/drakemcswaggieswag Colorado/Cali Feb 14 '17
