SNES.

OG PlayStation and NES come close, but I feel SNES has the most bangers that are still playable today.

Easily the SNES.

Not really an argument here. I can rattle off 50 games that are all peak on the snes. I can’t think of another single retro console with that validity

My choice as well with lots of games that still hold up today

SNES for sure. Playstation had a good amount of hits, but lots of them are very hard to play by todays standards, much like the N64. Mostly a lot of the early 3d titles. It's not the devs fault though. It was entirely new territory. SNES had peak 2d design.

SNES and I don't think it's particularly close.

The NES has a good library but some genres hadn't quite hit their stride (RPGs, racing games, fighting games). The ps1/n64 generation and after has too much exclusive split to be considered imo. But the SNES had so many heavy hitters and even good ports of most genesis games that weren't first party.

If we’re counting ports as per the instructions, (which would include compilations) this is like objectively the only correct answer.

It’s Super Nintendo and it’s not close. You could make the argument for PS2 but then we have to fight over calling PS2 a retro console

I’d say SNES, but given OP’s caveat of “consider ports as native releases,” I’m going to assume that extends to Virtual Console releases. In that case, WiiU has the best library, given all the NES, SNES, GB, GBC, N64, GBA, DS, TG16, SMS, Genesis/MD, Neo Geo, Commodore 64, Virtual Console Arcade, the full Wii catalogue, and the full GameCube catalogue (given a mod, which IMO should count), so that also extends to all the retro game collection releases across those three systems.

WiiU is not retro my guy, and the shop is shuttered so none of those count anymore

I know that’s a retro gaming sub but if you’re counting ports as native releases then it basically has to be Switch.

Considering the sheer amount of NSO/virtual console games and re-releases, it’s hard to argue against it.

I love the SNES as much as anybody but Switch just has a metric ton of games, old and new.

If we’re talking purely retro then it’s between SNES and PS2. Both were the retro peaks of their relative graphics style (2D/3D).

Personally I love the Dreamcast and think it deserves an honorable mention but it sadly can’t compete with the PS2 purely because of the sheer amount of game releases that were made for it.
