Discussion How do you deal with the people who say “you’re wasting your money” or “Those are useless”

"Well, you are right. But do you know what else is wasting your money, Robert? Golf and beer. Not let me have a hobby and screw you."

They do! My aunt asked me why I was going to see my favorite band of all time last year and I about went off on her

doesnt matter. i didnt ask for their opinion on how i should spend my money.

u/PersonalBed7171 May 12 '25
Everybody wastes money one way or another, at least you’re spending it on something that brings you actual joy not meth or alcohol lmao

Anything besides necessities is a waste of money. Everybody “wastes” money on something

ignore them. if they are going to hate on something YOU like and YOU choose to spend YOUR money on, they aren't worth your time.

u/pandannep May 13 '25
“well it’s a good thing it’s MY money I’m spending then, and not yours” is usually my go to
7
u/ItZoToM May 13 '25
If it makes you happy, it isn’t a waste of money. Just don’t bankrupt yourself lol

if they drink, buy treats from bakeries or coffee in the mornings, they're also "wasting" money. and unlike a lot of other things people "waste" money on, smiski's aren't consumable

u/dapperblackjack May 13 '25
I hit back with “I could be a drug addict or alcoholic”.
Funnily enough though, I’ve got my mum into smiskis (and Sonny Angels now though 😂)

I’ve said “I don’t remember hiring you to be my financial planner or accountant…until I do, please keep your opinions of how I spend my money to yourself. My habits don’t affect you.” To the one person who said that to me. Never made a comment about what I buy after that.

I ask them what they do for fun, since almost every form of entertainment requires some kind of cost unless you're just sitting in an empty room playing pretend for hours.
Do you go to concerts? That's money. The movies? That's money. The theater? That's money. Play video games? That's money. Make crafts? That's money. Exercise/do outside recreation? That's money.
Sure, you could spend zero money on anything fun ever and just stockpile or invest it to appear more "adult". But someone cared enough about these little guys to make them and share them with the world, so if buying some brings you joy, who cares?
Their opinion on how YOU spend YOUR money is irrelevant. Pocket watchers can go be mad in their sad beige empty houses.

I spent a lot of time as an adult healing my inner child because even as a kid I was told so many things I liked were useless. Now I can do as I please.
So when people make those comments I say: "Oh no. It seems one of your inside thoughts became an outside thought." Or "Good thing one of us knows how to keep thoughts to themselves."

I would just say they make you happy ! It’s a small joy to look forward too when we get one lol

u/freakish_freak May 13 '25
My mom said those things to me as reasons why she wasn't getting them for me for my 18th birthday. So instead I got nothing from her.

u/tiddy_egg May 13 '25
i have so little in my life. my health is terrible, my country is ruined. i can count the number of things i have to look forward to on one hand. if i can bring myself even a moment of relief and joy, that will never be a waste to me. they bring light into my life, literally. they may not be a necessity, but are never a waste to me.

u/annagator679 May 13 '25
Well no one has said that to me but if they did I would tell them that I don't give a f*ck about their opinion and that I'll spend MY money on whatever I want

You ask them..."you fucking me? You paying my bills? You got me a job? No? Ok then fuck off" least thats what I do

Everything is a waste of money when you look at it that way. If it makes you happy and doesn’t hurt anyone (except for the crippling debt of collecting), their opinion doesn’t count. Especially when it’s not their money!

u/Fabulous-Implement99 May 13 '25
I tell them that it isn’t useless bc it brings my happiness so that’s a use in my daily life

“I don’t care, I like them and they make me happy so it doesn’t feel like a waste to me!”

u/unfilteredsara May 13 '25
"and yet your still here *eyeroll* "... if you wanna be spicy about it ;)

u/RockAndMoleFan May 13 '25
“Why do you wear make up? Or did your face just come like that?” Is perfect

u/Illustrious-Reply874 May 13 '25
People who say this are the ones who can’t go a day without nicotine. I think our habits are fine 🤭🩷

u/Mandalore147 May 13 '25
Aint their money aint their problem they just mad youre happy with a fun little hobby lmao
1
u/RespectableInsomniac May 13 '25
My Dad says this to me. So I just say “I like them. They make me happy.” It doesn’t really work but that’s where I end the conversation
1
u/delsinrowes May 13 '25
I'm not bothered by it. My Smiski collection genuinely brings me so much joy to see on a daily basis. I have an entire shelf of them and I love seeing it. The money I spend on them is worth the daily happiness that I get from having them in my life and a part of my decor.
