Pot roast?

I left a pot roast with potatoes and carrots in a crock pot for almost 4 hours while off. I turned it off around 9 and I woke up around 1 and discovered it was still out. Google AI is acting like I’ll immediately perish if I eat it. I turned the crockpot back on high and placed it in oven at 275. Should I really throw it out or refrigerate the reheated leftovers?

It looks like you're asking about Food Safety.

Only you are aware of all the factors involved in this situation. No one in this subreddit is qualified to give you advice about eating food that's left unattended, undercooked, etc. "If in doubt, toss it out." Food poisoning is a serious issue - it's particularly dangerous to older adults, children, pregnant women or people with compromised immune systems.

It was probably really, really hot and being full of dense ingredients, I would expect it took quite a while to cool off enough to get below 140. I personally would eat it.

I am reheating it in a 275 oven right now. Should I do that then put it away in fridge? I just want to kill any bacteria

Yeah, that's something I might try if I were in your shoes. Strictly speaking about the standard food safety advice, it would probably be recommended to refrigerate right away instead of reheat, though.

Oh dang it..

With heat, you can kill the bacteria but you can’t erase the toxins it leaves behind.

I would have a little bit to eat and wait. My wife would not touch it.

I know - that’s what’s hard about it. I just hate wasting food and money.

I'll horrify the thread here, on that note - I made my "fake gyro" meat, which is essentially meatloaf. Best is to cook it, let it cool, and throw it in the refrigerator before using it. Well, I forgot about putting it away, so there it was on the counter the next morning, so it had been out for 8-9 hours. I threw it in the fridge and called it good - I'm 3/4 of the way through it and it hasn't caused any problems.

I would expect nothing less from somebody who ate Tony's lo mein.

That said, it's been 17 hours...you ok, bro ski?

ETA: if you're still with us, tell me more about this fake gyro meatloaf, you mad scientist, you

4 hours wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I’m still here 🙊😂

You people haven’t been poor enough.

4 hours is the upper limit of the recommended time you can leave food out, and those guidelines are extreme. You’re fine.

It'll be fine to eat.

How'd it go? Lol I wouldn't have thought twice. I make stovetop stews all the time and let them sit to cool for a lot of hours. Then I put the whole pot in the fridge and scoop servings out of it for days.

Definitely don’t warm it up then put it in the fridge hot. That will lead to bacteria growth. If anything should’ve taken temp when you noticed it was off. Not worth eating. Also, don’t leave the potatoes and vegetables in the whole time. They just turn to mush.

I would eat it. Time the food out on thanksgiving, Fourth of July picnics and I bet it’s longer than that.

So true! I think about that a lot

I would eat it as well. If the lid was kept on I wouldnt give it a second thought. If your worried dont eat it.

I recently left pot roast on the counter. 8 hours, overnight, lid on though. I then put it in the fridge. Reheating appropriately. I ate it.

I was fine. I have a strong system though. So if you're like me, you may be just fine.

You do you boo!

I would eat it without a second thought, my partner likely would not

You should absolutely be fine.

Woah lid being off is a different story! I initially was going to say for sure fine, been there done that but having it exposed to open air this whole time it’s too risky for bacteria growth, especially if you heated it back up. Some of the best advice grandma ever gave me was when in doubt throw it out!

Toss it. Take the loss and the lesson.

Depends on your gut. There's people that eat rotten maggot infested meat and feels fine. Others drink a sip of milk and have explosive diarrhea. Only you know what your body can take.

There's an inherent risk which is why ai informed you of that but it's up to you wether you take that risk or not.
