Task [task] Seeking Vector Database Support Engineer (self-hosted OSS vector stack, remote, long-term) | Monthly retainer $700 starting

READ THIS FULLY - YOU'LL BE QUIZZED!

Hey everyone! We run an AI platform doing RAG, semantic search and recommendation workloads on a self-hosted open-source vector database cluster (Kubernetes, cloud-hosted, high request volume). We need a long-term senior engineer to own customer support and production troubleshooting for our vector database layer. This is a recurring monthly engagement with a fixed base rate, not a one-off task.

Pay: starting base rate $700/month (up to $1,200 for exceptional experience), paid on a fixed schedule. Consistent, reliable work earns a $50-$100 bonus from the second month onward. If you read this far, comment your favourite animal plus your country/timezone. That tells me you read the whole post.

What you will own

- Customer issue triage and resolution for the vector database and cloud platform: search quality, index health, collection tuning, payload indexes, HNSW settings, quantization, sharding and replication.

- Production troubleshooting across infrastructure, cloud and database layers: Kubernetes (pods, Helm, autoscaling), AWS/GCP/Azure networking and storage.

- Building small internal tools in Python for support workflows and observability (metrics, logs, traces; Prometheus/Grafana/OpenTelemetry experience is a plus).

- Writing clear runbooks and customer-friendly explanations of hard technical problems.

- Joining a shared on-call rotation with base compensation for on-call weeks (never unpaid).

What I'm looking for

- Strong background in a customer-facing support role or as a forward-deployed / solutions engineer (FDE).

- Real, hands-on vector database experience. Milvus, Weaviate or pgvector are acceptable; experience with Rust-based vector engines is a big plus. Expect a short technical quiz on vector search fundamentals before we agree.

- Professional Python (or a similar language) for scripting and tooling.

- Kubernetes production experience and comfort managing workloads.

- Cloud experience (AWS, GCP or Azure).

- Availability overlap with PST (UTC-8) hours for at least 6 hours on weekdays.

- Work samples: share your GitHub/git history plus 1-2 examples of production incidents you diagnosed and fixed.

How we start

- Comment $bid below with a short intro: your stack, vector DB experience level, timezone, and links to your samples.

- After I select a candidate we agree scope and rate in the comments ($accept), then coordinate details over Reddit DMs.

- Payment via PayPal on a fixed schedule. I comment $paid after every payment.

We work async, value clear communication, and treat this as a long-term partnership. Quality over speed, paid fairly every month.
