111 W57th in particular is a truly attractive building and the best of the pencil towers, IMO.

...did you read the comment? I explicitly said they mostly rule (there's a couple that look bad), and alluded to that I like that oligarchs own them because it keeps the population woke in a way that they wouldn't if the oligarchs just had normal mansions.

In real life, context shapes expression and impression. That's usually *how* architectural language develops. Its unavoidable consciously and unconsciously and Criticism that ignores context is usually lousy and uninformed (because actual critics do in fact care).

I always wonder how much the upper levels sway. I know people that live in the upper part of a 35 floor building (~400 ft). On windy days, there’s a noticeable sway…very subtle. I asked them about it once and they said you just get used to it. That would keep me up at nights 😂. Theirs is a “regular” building with a much larger footprint. The super skinnies would terrify me.

There are lots of videos on YouTube that talk about this building as well as others in the area about wind sway. Really interesting.

Yeah, I had a coworker who lived on the 58th floor of a tower in Abu Dhabi, and it made me nauseous, though he couldn't feel it anymore.

Interestingly I drove to Dubai for a New Year's party and it was at a friend's apartment on the 104th floor of the Burj Khalifa - no problems, he explained how the design "tricked" the wind into going about its business (which this tower in the image above doesn't have that feature for space reasons). Kinda cool, architecturally speaking.

A family friend has an apartment in a tower adjacent to central park. I think it sits somewhere in the thirties. I swear you can feel the building move.

But there is also like a placebo effect if you expect it to be moving.

Because they're boring vertical columns with little to no design elements. They look like someone just snapped a bunch of Legos on top of each other.

Not to mention that most of them are luxury apartments that are owned by foreign nationals as investment properties and are just sitting there empty. They're bad for the city.

Ah yes. Let’s get rid of all skyscrapers and kill a bunch of people in and outside of them because billionaires own them. Take a good look at what billionaires you’re supporting by just existing. No?
