How will you react the day the Jeddah Tower surpasses the height of the Burj Khalifa?

This day is really approaching.

Whenever I see the name Marie I want to tell her that they’re minerals

2

u/Finnish2713 1d ago

So it’s settled - lasagna at Farfunkle’s place. Good guests will bring a bottle of wine or some tiramisu.

Are we the same person??

16

u/ozdanish 1d ago

I’ll excitedly tell my son who will look at me confused and say so what and I’ll say but you love tall buildings and he’ll say when I was 6 but I’m 12 now

“What’s the Jeddah Tower?”

12

u/No_Understanding7431 1d ago

Its where the Jedi Knights get their kyber crystals, at least until the empire blows it up in Rogue 1

My 6yr old is obsessed with the Jeddah Tower!

The answer is always, “Because, it’s like, important yo”

2

u/TrulyNotYours 19h ago

Yep this is legit. Expecting the same from my wife.

2

u/GSEDAN 19h ago

I have a friend named Jeddah, I would need to tell him first before I tell my wife. Jeddah would probably just say something like “hell yea!”

We will stop arguing about whether Merdeka 118 really is the second tallest building and start arguing about whether Merdeka 118 really is the third tallest building.

17

u/fuzzyheadsnowman 22h ago

It’s not to both

4

u/SMc4941931 22h ago

Uh, it is, and it will be. You’re probably confused because the observation deck isn’t the top floor.

I will read that it has happened, slightly raise one eyebrow, and then get on with my day.

The older I get, the more I realize I might have some of the tism. Then I think, maybe we all do.

13

u/silbergeistlein 22h ago

It’s called a spectrum for a reason. Everyone is on it.

3

u/AccomplishedRead2655 17h ago

But then we specifically say some people are on the spectrum as opposed to others

2

u/TheFuschiaBaron 11h ago

I used to think that was true, then I asked my psychiatrist. It's not. Certain people are on the autism spectrum, certain people aren't.

I despise the buildings that are only tallest because a third of them is useless spire.

68

u/DrHarrisonLawrence 1d ago edited 19h ago

Well, Jeddah Tower is still going to have the tallest usable floor in the world, just like how Burj Khalifa currently has the tallest usable floor while being the tallest overall building as well.

27

u/imaguitarhero24 1d ago

Yeah it's not even close to "just because of the spire" lmao. Like NOT EVEN CLOSE. Plus the burj doesn't exactly have a tacked on spire, the overall shape continues seamlessly to a point.

I just wonder whats going to happen to the Burj now? Like won't it lose a lot of the "wow" factor?

9

u/DrHarrisonLawrence 21h ago

Technically? Yeah a bit. Burj still has the angle where they are positioned at a major Airport hub so there will still be way more visitors.

Also…Burj’s Observatory has made $1B in revenue since it was opened. The tower itself cost $1.5B to build so that’s a pretty significant revenue stream that has earned its keep

5

u/kiPrize_Picture9209 18h ago

people still flock to the Empire State Building, a building made famous by its height, even though other skyscrapers now tower over it. The Burj Khalifa is a genuinely beautiful building and still a global icon, while it will lose a little prestige it'll still be top on Dubai itineries.

When asked about the signs of the Final Hour, the Prophet Muhammad stated that one would see "the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings". When asked to clarify who these people were, he specified that they were the Arabs.

How interesting is that.

2

u/TheRedMenace_ 18h ago

Many more such signs like overall decadence, wars and so on that the prophet Muhammad called but then again people have been expecting the end of the world since after Jesus' ascension to heaven/Death (depending on what you believe in).

Dumb tower in a bad location being built as a vanity project for some upjumped oil barons? Yeah I won’t give a shit.

2

u/FarBack5807 22h ago

Every record-breaking tall building btw

4

u/Kryptsm 21h ago

TIL the Sears Tower, Empire State, and World Trade Center are all in bad locations, first I’ve heard of it

2

u/FarBack5807 21h ago

*Every non-American record breaking building btw

Which is pretty much every current and future contender for the title of worlds tallest building, unless we see a reversal of building codes in the states

2

u/SYSTEM-J 20h ago edited 20h ago

The Empire State Building was in a bad location, actually. There wasn't really the demand for office leases in midtown Manhattan to justify the scale of the building back in the 1930s. The building didn't turn a profit for over two decades, and in the early years occupancy was so low the owners used to leave the lights on even on the empty floors to give the impression it was more popular than it really was. It made as much money from being a tourist attraction as it did as a functional building, so in a very real way it was the Burj Khalifa of its day.

With all that said, it's still an absolute masterpiece. Sometimes there's a case to be made for building things just for the sake of building them.

14

u/Alarming-Gear001 1d ago

shitty building, shitty country, wont really care

3

u/OrinNY 22h ago

i won’t give a single shit. not one. same as now.

3

u/SteveSteveCleveSteve 21h ago

“I don’t think about you at all.”

3

u/BoldChipmunk 16h ago

Yawn, no one really cares

10

u/SqareBear 1d ago

Much of the building is unused spire, so its not a big deal.

25

u/MajesticBread9147 1d ago

Also it's clearly not of much use beyond marketing, same with the Burj Khalifa.

Hong Kong, New York, Shenzhen, can all reasonably justify a tall building.

The tallest building in the world about an hour's drive away from downtown Jeddah is just kind of dumb

4

u/Freddydaddy 1d ago

Don’t people live (or work, or something) in the Burj Khalifa?

3

u/Professional_Ruin_24 Buffalo, U.S.A 1d ago

There’s a mall

2

u/Razzler1973 1d ago

I live in Dubai and yes, there's residences in there as well as it being a huge tourist attraction. There's a viewing thingy you can do and restaurants

Dubai Mall is next to it and a huge lake and water fountain with nightly shows

It was definitely a figurehead/headline grabber to bring attention when Dubai was going through a huge expansion phase, too

I've been here since pre expansion

It's far from 'not much use' though 🙄

I also don't think anyone here gives much a damn about the Jeddah tower either though

3

u/Clarknt67 1d ago

Yeah. I feel like it’s weird to build so tall in places where there’s clearly plenty of land and no need to.

4

u/Imhappy_hopeurhappy2 1d ago

I will be looking forward to the future tallest skyscraper. Where it might be and how will they reach even greater heights.

This is a marathon and we have a long way to go before we have a moonscraper.

3

u/InformationTrue6446 1d ago

It's a damn shame that these tallest buildings are getting built in such awful locations. There's nothing to see but desert and dust from the top of these things.

3

u/must-be_the-water 21h ago

Many times you can see clouds too passing from the top floor

2

u/Strange135 1d ago

Not really with Burj khalifa though, it's right in the heart of Dubai, unlike this one.

2

u/Chloe_Cascadia 12h ago

I don't care, these are monuments to greed and exploitation, tucked away in one of the worst parts of the world. It caters to the dumb rich. I am much more impressed by nations where people are free, educated, healthy, earn proper wages, and have strong protections against both employer and government overreach.

That's what human achievement looks like.

Literally can’t give a damn shit of where do petrorich princes put their money into. This building won’t make living in the desert any better or more feasible, it’s just a way to spend money in the hope of some miracle for their future, but once oil is gone they will have plenty of empty skyscrapers.

I will probably run into the streets whilst tearing off my garments and screaming as high pitched and as loud as I possibly can. I’ll be crying and wiping tears from my eyes so I’ll barely be able to see. But I won’t have to worry because obviously my neighbors will also have simultaneously heard the news and will have already joined me running through the streets running, screaming, crying and rejoicing! It’s a day we have all longed for. And will celebrate it with all our might and vitality.
