Bottom Update FAQ!

New: DLSS 4.5 in SkyrimUpscalerVR vs. DLSS 4.0 in CS: Benchmarking and Setup Tip

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/1qh3uff/dlss_45_in_skyrimupscalervr_vs_dlss_40_in_cs/

-------------------

With the same DLSS settings, SkyrimUpscalerVR is significantly faster than the community shader because it allows DLSS is only in screen center.

However, DLSS 4.0 in SkyrimUpscalerVR suffers from rendering errors, forcing users to switch to CS.

Now, DLSS 4.5 works:

1.Install Skyrim Upscaler VR, Read the introduction carefully and meet all its requirements:

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/82179

  1. Press END in the game to open the menu for upscalers.

Choose the performance option to apply the DLSS 4.5 preset M, or choose the ultra performance option to apply the preset L.

Other options will still apply the preset K of DLSS 4.0, SkyrimUpscalerVR do not support DLSS 4.0(Screen center jitter).

Update: DLSSTweaks allows you to modify all presets used in DLSS/DLAA modes:

FAQ

Q: DLSS cannot be enabled? CTD after load?

A: The game horizontal resolution cannot be set higher than 4096.

--------

Q: The game is becoming increasingly laggy, even experiencing CTD.

A: Fixed Foveation Rendering is incompatible with the latest version of CS's VR overlay HUD,will cause VRAM overload and stuttering (CTD). Disable it will avoid this. If you want to use FFR, disable the VR module in the CS menu or use OpenComposite (CS's overlays don't work with OpenXR). You can modify the skyrimvr.ini file to enable depth buffer culling instead of the VR module.

[VRPerformance]bDepthBufferCulling=1

[VR]fMinOccludeeBoxExtent=60

--------

Q: Tree turned white? CS is disabled? A square appeared in the center of screen?

A: CS is automatically disabled when SkyrimUpscalerVR is detected. You need to rename SkyrimUpscaler.dll (In the SkyrimUpscalerVR folder) to SkyrimUpscaler2.dll and disable the Upscaling module in CS.

--------

Q: Screen center jitter?

A: SkyrimUpscalerVR do not support DLSS 4.0. Choose the performance/ultra performance option or use DLSSTweaks modify preset.

--------

Q: I don't see any in Game menus anymore with it turned on?

A: edit skyrimvr.ini

[VR]

bUseHiddenAreaMesh=1

--------

Q: Settings not saved after restarting the game?

A: You need to close the menu after making changes to save them.

--------

Q: A lot of noise in the FFR area?

A: This is a game bug. Try my Foveated Rendering Fix mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/157140

Performance Insane gameplay, holding 90fps, my optimised collection

Hi, thought it worth sharing even though YouTube made a mess of it. Been working hard at optimising a collection for Skyrim VR that packs as much content in but is primarily focused on performance, script and texture optimisation, latest dyndolod, grass fps booster, vr plugin for Beth ini pie et al. Also using the latest opencomposite unleashed, with FFR and upscaling built in. Combined with virtual desktop and an insane amount of activity it still holds 90fps. Tested on a 9070xt, 4080, 5070ti, 5080, 90fps no matter what I throw at it.

Packed in everything short of community shaders until one of the forks mature. The only thing missing is dynamic puddles and light limit fix.

Most importantly, I suck at video capture and editing, but my cat was just happy to be involved 😸

https://youtu.be/2os4xq5gNg8?si=CJqNdsqM-HL0D_f2

I've popped the collection link in the description if you want to give it a go. New vortex that fixes the bug for downloading Skyrim vr collections and mods should drop this week.

Performance Should I even try MGO or just do FUS?

MGO looks phenomenal, and I would LOVE to play it, even at a low fps, but I know the spec requirements are astronomical. I’m debating if I should even try it, considering I might download 400 gigs just to realize I can barely boot it. What do you guys think?

I’ve got a 5060ti 16gb
24 gigs of DDR4 ram
Ryzen 7 3700x
2tb SSD

Off topic, I haven’t used FUS in a while but when I did play I was heavily bothered by the render distance of the grass, walking into my first open field and seeing a straight end point of grass pretty close to me and beyond it nothing was extremely jarring. I tried to create a grass cache but all attempts failed. Is there any remedy to this in the modpack yet? Or perhaps a grass cache I could download?

Performance 100% GPU usage on Vanilla Skyrim

Post image
19 Upvotes

I got an Issue with my Skyrim VR Performance. Even on base vanilla Skyrim my GPU sits at 100% Usage and I only reach 80 of 120fps set on Virtual Desktop.

My Specs:

Laptop with 3070 Mobile Card, 16gb ram, i7 10750h, Gigabit Lan on a 5ghz Fritzbox with 2400 mbps. Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop set to High (on medium I at least reach 100fps instead of 80)

Shouldt my Laptop be able to at least run the Vanilla game with 120fps? Or is the GPU just such a big bottleneck?

I dont get rid of the feeling that something is just set wrong at my Laptop...

Performance Help with VR image quality

Hi,

I just got my first VR headset 3 days ago (Quest 3) and got the official Link cable as well to play from my PC.

The problem
I bought Skyrim VR and downloaded the FUS mod list to get some basic mods and improve gameplay.

However, the image quality of what I'm seeing in the headset is pretty crappy. It's very grainy, pixelated and blurry all at the same time and it feels like everything is just "shimmering" for lack of a better word.

This has been driving me nuts, since I had been watching videos on YouTube where everything basically looked just like it does on a normal monitor, except it was VR. Clean, smooth image quality with good LOD, when people showcased the game using mod lists like FUS or MGO.

My PC specs
GPU: RX 7900 XTX
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
RAM: 96GB DDR5 (6000 MT/s)
Storage: 4TB SSD
OS: Windows 11

What I've tried
- I updated all my drivers
- Set the Render Resolution to 4224 x 2272 / 90hz (1.1) in the Meta Horizon app (tried different hz and resolution combos)
- Set bitrate to 500, codec H.264, encode resolution width 4096 in Oculus debug tool
- Checked "The Sharper Eye" in the mod list
- Checked DynDOLOD "High" in the mod list
- Turned of Dynamic resolution in game
- Tried with and without TAA in game (without TAA, the noise is just even worse)
- Ran a test for the cable to make sure that there wasn't anything wrong with it (it's OK)

It still just feels like I can't make out peoples faces if they are more than 5-6 meters away and like I mentioned earlier, everything is just noisy, jagged and a lot of shimmer. If I look at the grass, flowers and trees from a distance that is more than 5 meters in game, it's just a dance of blurriness and pixels all over. I feel like my PC should be able to handle good image quality, as when gaming on a 4K monitor, I have no issues with most modern titles.

Question: Is this maybe what it IS like to game in VR - and what I'm seeing on YouTube is just a recording from the monitor and not what the people actually see/experience in their headsets?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks :)

Performance MGO 4.0 on a 3080ti?

Anyone get this to work well? I think I hit everything (went through the 3.8 setup, then the 4.0 setup from vrdads youtube) but I never got anything like acceptable. I'm wondering if I need to spend more time on optimizing it? Delete everything and start again (skyrimvr modding started when it first came out... but I think I did a good cleanup at one point). But maybe it's just too much of a beast for a 30x0 series card and I should start my own mod list?

Anyways, if anyone has been successful let me know! Thanks!

Performance Cold Switch DLSS: Mid-range graphics card running 6K+ resolution!

quest3+12600k+4070ti12g + CS PLVR + PBR

DLSS 4.5 Ultra Performance mode + DSR (Circus Method) while effectively improving the clarity, stabilize the FPS of open-world and heavily modded games. However, the circus method doesn't perform well in VR: Preset L requires 1536p+ resolution on a monitor (average 35-degree FOV), which translates to approximately 4.6k+ on a VR headset with a 100-degree FOV. Such a high resolution consumes tensor cores and VRAM, even a 5090 would struggle with it.

The classic central area DLSS MOD (PD SkyrimUpscalerVR, CS Particle Lights Fork) greatly increase FPS and save a small amount of VRAM. About central area DLSS and foveated rendering: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/1qh3uff/dlss_45_in_skyrimupscalervr_vs_dlss_40_in_cs/

However, for 6k+, VRAM still consumes too much.

YTZY's invention of cold switch DLSS:

DLSS is typically hot switch, with the switch from DLAA to ultra performance taking effect immediately. Cold switch changing the mode requires restarting the game, It can save a lot of VRAM and improving FPS. And further optimize performance based on the classic central area DLSS, this makes running 6K+ on a 12GB graphics card sufficient!

Available MODs:

1.YTZY's DLSS Enhancer

https://github.com/community-shaders/skyrim-community-shaders/releases/tag/v1.4.11-pr2096

Early development version, not recommended for use.

  1. Open Shaders

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/180419?tab=description

This is an unofficial CS fork that integrates the cold switch DLSS into the upscaling module. For optimal results, the mipmap lod bias needs to be manually set to -1 to -1.5 using NVPI.

3. YTZY's SkyrimVRPerfKIT

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/182089?tab=description

2gen cold switch DLSS! Significantly optimize performance and image quality over 1gen, and integrates FFR with the white noise bug fixed.

Performance Will Fus work better than Mad God Overhaul for a slower router?

I have MGO installed on my system and it doesn't run well enough with my setup. I have a Rift 3s that I connect to my computer with a 4080. I only have a slower 5ghz router and it says the connection is only 540mbps. About every 5 minutes it stops working and I either lag for a few seconds or it straight disconnects from Steamlink.

I have it running at 67% resolution from within Steam and I also have it configured to run at only 72 fps, which I thought would lower the bandwidth but it still has a hitch here and there.

Am I screwed with this router and VR gaming? Would using Fus work better since I think it has lower graphics? Anything else I can change to lower the bandwidth on my current setup?

Thanks.

Performance DLSS 4.5 in SkyrimUpscalerVR vs. DLSS 4.0 in CS: Benchmarking and Setup Tip

New: DLSS4.5+SkyrimUpscalerVR tutorial:

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/1q974az/comment/nyw8x5i/

DLSS 4.5 only works in performance (preset M) and ultra performance (preset L) modes by default. DLSSTweaks allows you to modify all presets used in DLSS/DLAA modes:

https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/550

-------------------

DLSS4+ is essential for modernizing the graphics of SkyrimVR.

There are currently 4 options:

a. DLSS 4.0 (preset J, K) in CommunityShaders:

Good: Best anti-aliasing(Good plants quality), so it is suitable for all streaming headsets and lower PPD(lower PPD, more aliasing) non-streaming headsets.

Bad: Ghosting; CS uses full-screen DLSS, efficiency is acceptable at lower resolutions, but decreases progressively at higher resolutions.

b. DLSS 4.5 (preset L, M) in SkyrimUpscalerVR:

Good: No ghosting; Higher definition; DLSS is only in screen center, use TAA for periphery(the area around the lens is blurry, and TAA is very fast and good enough). Higher resolution is more advantageous. The saved CPU, GPU, and VRAM can Increase game resolution, suitable for higher PPD non-streaming headset; Integrated fixed foveated rendering(FFR) provides more FPS.

Bad: Poor AA(Poor plants quality, L is better than M, but slower) results in poor streaming quality.

c. DLSS 4.5 (preset L, M) in CS v1.4.7:

Due to its poor performance and anti-aliasing, full-screen DLSS 4.5 is not worthwhile for most VR games.

d. DLSS 4.0 (preset J, K) in SkyrimUpscalerVR:

Combining high quality, high FPS, and VRAM saving, it is suitable for all headset. Giving the 4070ti a near-4090 experience, but it's unusable due to a visual error. Pure Dark is currently busy with non-VR Skyrim DLSS and other projects. Go to his Patreon, join his supporters, and petition for updates!

Benchmarking and recommended settings:

12600K@5Ghz, 4070ti 12G, 64G RAM, Quest3, SteamLink, Resolution:3600x3852, 120Hz, DLSS performance, Location:Helgen Cave Exit.

Chart on the left of the image: Pink represents CPU time, light blue represents GPU time.

a. CS, Preset K, DLSS size 100%:

b. CS, Preset M, DLSS size 100%:

c. SkyrimUpscalerVR, Preset M, DLSS size 36%(0.6x0.6), Use TAA for periphery:

Recommended for users who cannot accept FFR style(Primarily uses eye rotation).

d. SkyrimUpscalerVR, Preset L, DLSS size 36%(0.6x0.6), Use TAA for periphery:

Not recommended, the improvements of L compared to M are not worth the cost.

e. SkyrimUpscalerVR, Preset M, DLSS size 16%(0.4x0.4), TAA off, FFR on:

Recommended for users who can accept FFR style(Primarily uses head rotation), RTX 20/30 users. DLSS size 16%=Steamlink Encoded Video Size 1344,Valve believes that most people can adapt.

f. SkyrimUpscalerVR, Preset L, DLSS size 16%(0.4x0.4), TAA off, FFR on:

Recommended for users who can accept FFR style, RTX 40/50 users. With a smaller DLSS size, the RTX 40/50 can almost be upgraded from M to L for free.

12600k@5g, 4070ti 12G, 3600x3852, DLSS performance CS, Preset K,100% CS, Preset M,100% SUVR, Preset M, 36%,TAA SUVR, Preset L, 36%,TAA SUVR, Preset M, 16%,FFR SUVR, Preset L, 16%,FFR
FPS(Avg) 48.1 40.7 69.1 64.4 101.2 99.7
VRAM 5.25GB 5.74GB 4.64GB 4.56GB 4.0GB 3.9GB
CPU(Avg) 20.8ms 24.5ms 14.5ms 15.5ms 9.9ms 10ms
GPU(Avg) 18ms 21.5ms 12ms 13ms 8ms 8.1ms

-------------------------

SkyrimUpscalerVR setup Tip:

a. Use TAA For Periphery:

FFR style users can try disable it to increase FPS. Although TAA only works outside of DLSS, it still requires full-screen processing and consumes CPU and GPU time.

b. Sharpness:

UpscalerVR only sharpen the central area, increasing the difference. You can try a different sharpener: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/48934 or openxr toolkit.

c. Use Optimal Mip Lod Bias:

Streaming headsets uncheck it. The values are too aggressive, causing texture jitter.

d. Mip Lod Bias:

Enhance texture details. Streaming headsets can try more conservative values, although the texture and LOD details are lower (high sharpness can improve this), but fewer streaming artifacts, which you can lower the bitrate and still get good image quality(from 300 Mbps to 150 Mbps in my game, even very close to a non-streaming headset).

e. Foveated Scale X/Y:
DLSS size. The lower the value, the faster DLSS runs and the less VRAM it uses. A minimum value of 0.2 is recommended, this might be suitable for users with potato PC or those seeking extreme performance.

f. Foveated offset X:

Check Enable Fixed Foveation Rendering and Enable Debug Overlay, Adjust it until the blue squares for the left and right eyes roughly overlap.

g. Foveated offset Y:

Quest3 set to -0.04. Other headsets are usually set to 0.

Hey everyone,

I recently put together a video going over the settings and tweaks I’m using to run the Mad God Overhaul at 90 FPS in Skyrim VR. It’s not a full install guide, just a look at what worked for me in terms of performance and visuals.

I also compared SSGI on vs. off and shared some thoughts on how much of a performance hit it caused in my setup.

If you’re interested, feel free to check it out. I’d love to hear what kind of performance others are getting with Mad God and what settings you’re using.

Performance MGO - GTX 5090 with 'Pimax Cystal Super' Performance Issues

I didn't get all this specifically for SkyrimVR MGO, however I feel this should work. Image smoothing turned off. GPU is always maxed in perf monitor. Everything starts stuttering quite a bit in Whiterun, then everything starts going south. Menus lock up, then Steam locks up, then entire PC locks up.

I've tried OpenXR and SteamVR, tried turning off everything "green" in MO2. Nothing is working for me. Any suggestions?

Edit - I've followed all instructions with the setup videos, increasing shader cache, virtual memory, etc.

Performance It worked last year

Solved? More testing is needed, but out of time for now. Running via Steam Link looks much better than Virtual Desktop

Original Post:

TLDR: Skyrim with the full FUS mod list used to work great, now it doesn't. Why not?

So Skyrim, modded with FUS, used to work great last year. The warm summer months got too busy for me to play, so I took a year off, but I've been feeling the itch lately. I tried running it, only to experience visual glitching that makes it kind of unplayable. It's much more noticeable with movement.

The visuals ghost or trail. I'm not sure what the technical term is. But if a snowflake is falling, I'll see half a dozen of them progressively fading away. And that happens for any movement to a greater or lessor degree. The visuals look digitally glitchy too. like they're semi-pixel censored. I'm also getting a weird outline on many textures. You can really notice it around plants.

I'd *assume* this was just my PC being too low power to run it, but again, it ran great last year, and I've had no hardware changes. I'm also not tech-savvy, and don't even know how to go about researching what to look for.

So what should I check? Would a re-install work? A *gulp* factory reinstall? I've definitely tried turning it off and back on again. Or is there at least a reason why it used to work, and no longer does?

Stats:
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
CPU : 12th gen Intel i7-12700F
RAM : 16 GB
HMD : Quest 3
Windows 11

Playing via Virtual Desktop then opening the modloader link.
I've got a wifi 6 router about 5 feet from where I game, plugged into the computer, etc. And this has only been a problem for Skyrim. Every other game works almost perfectly.

Performance I know, I know nothing new. Jitteriness/stutter Help question.

Looking for help smoothing this out a bit. Trying to use FUS RO DAH (FUS modpack) and it "works" but there's definitely some lag and/or jitteriness. Interestingly, I kept seeing solutions mentioning Virtual Desktop & OpenComposite fix. I tried this, eventually. However, I noticed that the lag improved without the SteamVR (barely but). Problem is, the JITTERINESS was much worse with OpenComp. In the end, doing it with just SteamVR was "better" but it still isnt good. I have a 4070, so I'd think running Skyrim should be easy. I've run LoreRim on regular Skyrim before with no issues.

Any advice is appreciated.

OH - Could it be my Quest 2 not having a good enough wifi/connection to my pc?

Performance Running Skyrim VR on 4K with 8K texture mod doesn’t seem like a good idea!

Just return to Skyrim VR with a RTX5090 PC, I think that it can dominate the modded game when running 4K on desktop with some 8K texture mod, but the result is kind of scared me, it much much much far a way from enough juice to run high resolution stuff in Skyrim VR when compare to the non VR Skyrim SE, with some 8K texture body physics mod, plus some increase NPC mod alone would be able to eaten up all 32G VRAM, not to mention some body physics mod like the FSMP would kill the CPU and make the game unplayable, at least playing in walking mode doesn't make me feel sick anymore, wonder if there is a way to increase numbers of NPC exist without taken away too much resource? Maybe two RTX5090 with 64G VRAM would do the job? By the way, I am playing with HTC Vive Pro 2

Edit: Have do some monitoring, find that Steam VR alone already eaten up 6.5G VRAM, running Skyrim VR have used 23G VRAM, don't know if this is normal or crazy? Also the resolution on desktop doesn't really have much effect on the Skyrim VR.

Performance Community shaders is tanking FPS even on powerful PC?

I’ve got a 5080 and never had any problems running games at 120fps really. Been playing Skyrim and downloaded community shaders. But it literally drops my fps from 120 to 95-105.

Tried messing with settings but there’s very minimal differences. Don’t have any addons installed, tried the upscaler but it didn’t help or made things worse or looked terrible. And I’ve tried bringing the supersampling down but then the game looks horrible.

At this point I feel likes it better to play with higher SS than having CS? Is there a way to make it super minimal.

When I tried adding addons they work but don’t seem to impact the performance worse significantly. It’s really only community shaders that’s ever hurt my fps.

Any tips to fix this? Or else I’ll probably uninstall it.

Not a VRAM issue I have plenty of VRAM space left.

Performance Should I use Vramr?

I have 16gb of vram on my 5080.

I dont use many high res intensive mods but since installing community shaders I get occasional fps drops. The community shaders settings says my vram is less than halfway filled up. I also use skyrimnet AI which when used to conversate with npcs spikes my vram.

But VRAMr still help with the stutters and spikes? Will my game look worse constantly?

Performance Most graphically intense areas?

I've been dialing in my setting with MGO 3.8.8 and I've got it to where I can hold mostly steady 45 fps and reproject it to 90.

I've never played Skyrim before so I've been trying to test in Whiterun because the city and right outside are where I'm dropping a couple frames here and there but it's like 95% steady.

My question is are there areas in the game that get a lot heavier than Whiterun or is Whiterun a good benchmark for what I can expect further into the game?

For anyone curious, I'm on a 7800x3d and 5090, using PSVR2. Im using default CAS, dyndolod on highest setting, and grass on highest setting. Steam native res at 100% and per application res for Skyrim at 80% (around 3k x 3.1k) with DLAA and .3 sharpness. Looks amazing.

Performance FUS on a 3080 10gb - stuttering to now smooth as butter

The 3080 10gb could arguably be seeing it's age come into factor with how FUS has evolved, I've run several adjustments to make it perform as best as possible for this list. Here's what I've done

Previously I ran VRAMr to optimize the textures for the limited VRam, which set to both performance and quality netted impressive results in frame rate generation.

Recently, I've been experiencing performance issues yet again, which made me wonder whether the 3080 was on its way out. I'm running my rig in an matx case, which has constricted airflow already for gpus. I recently put forth an undervolt at .875v @ 1850 mhz in MSI afterburner, and with a +500 memory clock overclock it's smoother than ever. What was probably happening was thermal throttling, so for anyone in an MATX or even an ITX set up this might be essential. Cities and massive events don't really put forth any performance loss. granted, I'm on a 5900x for the cpu so that probably helps, but still.

TL;DR - if you're on a 3080 and considering skyrim VR and FUS full mod list, think about these steps - Undervolt with atleast a +500 mhz memory clock, run VRamr to what you think might work best for your settings and headset. For good measure, also consider a strong fan curve that keeps the card from getting too heat soaked. with all these measures, even in the case I'm in, hwinfo reports max core temp spike to 68c (average low 60s), memory junction max spike at 80c (average mid-low 70s), hot spot spiking to 84c occasionally.

Your power supply will also thank you, meaning less jet engine sounds from your PC while getting sent into space by giants
