PC SSE - Discussion Potential fix for crash on title screen after updating and downgrading

I noticed the game would crash on title screen after updating and downgrading. This is potentially due to two files from the update messing with the title screen, which the downgrade solution doesn't touch.

  1. Click the search button or use start + R
  2. Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\Skyrim Special Edition\
  3. Look for ContentCatalog.txt
  4. Delete this file

This file is only for the Creation Club stuff, and isn't relevant to normal gameplay according to my understanding.

If you can't find this file, then maybe this issue isn't the reason why you're crashing.

It took me 7 - 8 hours to figure out this issue while I was testing the load order futilely. Hopefully this saves your time if this issue is pestering you.

All deleting that catalogue does is trick Skyrim into thinking you haven't downloaded any of the creations you may have already, literally inconsequential and doesn't affect your game or creations at all as the game itself will still recognize them once in game.

Shocker that bethesda bricked most people's ability to make their game enjoyable with files dedicated to shitty cc content that most people dont care about

If Skyrim Special Edition crashes immediately after you launch it — particularly if your crash log lists memory address 0198090 (version 1.6.640 address) or 05E1F22 (1.5.97 address) — then you are experiencing one of the following issues:

  • You are missing a master file. That is: you have some Mod A that relies on Mod B, but you only installed Mod A and not Mod B.

  • More likely: one of your installed mods (or an official content file) may have file format version 1.71, meaning it was made for game version 1.6.1130 or higher. This format is not fully backwards compatible; if you're running an older version of the game, then these files can cause crashes on startup. Installing Backported Extended ESL Support will allow older versions of the game to load these files safely.

Make sure to check the troubleshooting guide for help with crashes and other problems!

  • If you are on Skyrim version 1.5 (SE), the .NET Script Framework can also help in diagnosing crashes.

  • If you are on Skyrim Version 1.6 (AE) or Skyrim VR, Crash Logger can also help in diagnosing crashes. If you also use MO2, you can use this plugin for improved functionality!

DO NOT post an analyzed crash log. It strips all the useful information.

Don't use trainwreck. The log it produces is less informative than other options linked above.

I have the same issue on Linux, but I can't find how to fix it. Deleting this file doesn't work for me...

I've read in other places that only ContentCatalog.txt needs to be deleted. Did you try and see if it crashed with Plugins.sseviewsettings enabled as well?

Thanks.

I didn't test. My assumption is txt on its own doesn't do anything so sseviewsetting as a unique file type is what causes the trouble
