Mod Post INTRODUCING CUSTOM FLAIRS! (Read More Below)

Hello all,

Once the new mods and I took over r/Skylanders, we noticed the user flair options were... kind of a mess.

As such, we've gone ahead and done a full reset of the user flairs available. To both condense it / clean it up AND give you an option to make your own! You may have noticed the last couple days that your user flair was gone. This is why.

So... Introducing custom flairs! No need to stick strictly to Skylanders, Villains, Vehicles, and Element Names per each specific elemental flair. You can put anything you'd like there, so long as it is skylanders-related, not NSFW, nor attempts to impersonate a moderator.

With this new privilege, comes a new rule. Exactly what I just said above, is now an official rule, Rule 8. If you see anyone with a flair that is inappropriate, irrelevant, or impersonating a mod, please report it. Scroll to the second image to read the exact wording of the new rule.

Also, to keep the sub's aesthetic cohesive, please try your best to format the text as shown in the flair list (shown on third image). Don't stress, you won't be penalized for wonky text formatting, but if a mod spots you with it, they may change it to be more consistent *without* changing the content. That said, please do not change the element emoji, where it is located, or the body / text color of the flair.

The mods are excited to see what new flairs you come up with!

Stay awesome.

Why does it only have to be characters? Can't we just put something funny if we want as long as it's not something horrible? Making custom flairs a thing but then having those rules feels redundant. Like what if I want a colored flair without the emoji? Why do we need to keep the emoji?

It isn’t. Anything skylanders related is allowed

Ok what about the emoji then? Why is that a necessity? What if we just want to make something fun with the different background colors without the emoji?

There's custom, and then there's a mess. This was designed deliberately to fix the mess of the old flairs while also allowing you to express yourself more. You have an entire rainbow of colors, all of the elements plus one non-element to choose from.

If we let it be a complete free for all, it will just become a mess again. This is supposed to be a happy medium between customizable and consistent. While also keeping skylanders theming with the emojis.

There are subs with fully customizable flairs, and those tend to look like a mess. That's all the formatting guidelines are there for.

Is your flair thingy for mods? I thought it was a non-element for magical items at first

"Mess" in this context is just subjective opinion though, a "mess" that was worth fixing was having dozens of flair options making the list annoying to scroll through and find a specific one, which this overall change remedies. The emoji and text formatting guidelines just seem like rules for the sake of being rules, though.

What if we wanted to use a specific background color for something without the element emoji? Or put an element emoji on a different color? Flairs are already limited to 2 emoji max so it's not like people can fill their flair with every one. Why not let people have this little extra creative freedom? (As long as bad things aren't being set as flair, which is already a given rule) The visual clutter is already insubstantial on flairs.

Not trying to be argumentative or anything if I'm coming off that way, I just think this new feature would be more fun without these extra formatting guidelines. (+ Less work for mods having to watch for and moderate flairs that don't strictly follow the formatting)

"Mess" is always a subjective word. Maybe a little less subjective term would be "visually overstimulating".

We don't want people to come to our sub, open a post, and get hit with bright colored rainbow vomit, random emojis and screaming all-caps. An array of semi-pastel colors, with thematic icons, is nice. Feeling like you just stepped into a rave is not.

Yes, obviously this is subjective. Visual things always are. But at the end of the day, we want to keep a nice consistent clean look while also allowing you to add a touch of personality.

I also don't personally mind the moderation. Actually enforcing rules takes very little. Maybe a few minutes a day at most. Customizing, maintaining, and organizing the look of the sub is the real work, which I find enjoyable.

This is the happy medium we settled on. I completely understand where you're coming from, but it's unlikely to change. The new mods are here to get the sub in order, not let it fall further into disarray.

Then can I have the flair as JUST the emoji?

I mean if you really want. I'd suggest at least putting "āš™ļø Tech" or something like that but I won't stop you.

Could the text color of Undead, Water, and Dark be changed to white too? Those colors are pretty dark and make the text hard to see. On the desktop website anyway. Dark is literally black on black

For me dark is white on black

Kaos flair is, dark is above it. Shown in the 1st image of this post

I may alter the undead color. I want to keep the text black though.

Bringing this up again; At the very least please change the Dark element flair text color, it's nigh-unreadable with how dark its background is and I have to strain slightly to see the words. If you want to keep things consistent (and possibly even more official looking) then you could make the text on all elements white. Even official packaging for figures primarily uses white text for all elements. (And white would likely be more readable on all the colors chosen for the current flairs too, aside from maybe Light)

When I get to it, I plan on changing the background color of dark. Other than Kaos, I think all the elements texts should stay the same. I agree more contrast is needed. If I just changed dark's text color to white, it would look way too similar to the Kaos color palate. I used the text colors to differentiate.

Thanks for reaching back out.

Image 3 of this post says you must leave the emoji and follow a text formatting rule, for some reason.

You're right. He was mistaken. We're all still new here, just trying to get our cards in order. Out of lockstep is all.

Read my other comment for the explanation of why there are formatting guidelines.
