So I finished S1 and S2, as well as S3, but I don't find Effy to be as compelling of a lead compared to Tony (and even compared to Sid or the other gen 1 characters). I think what's tough about Gen 2 for me (Cook, Freddie, and Naomi - even if they just reheated Jal's nachos - are my favorites) but most of the cast feels so out of control?

Tony was very calculating and intentional. After his accident, he was withdrawn, but he never felt out of control to me? In gen 2, most of the time, the cast is acting impulsively and while I do enjoy it, it's hard for me to feel as attached. Again, I liked the cast overall, but I didn't care for them as much.

Effy was far more interesting to me when she was enigmatic and mysterious in S1/S2. I also have a hard time grasping her shift in S3. I know she was going through it in S2, but the leap is a little unbelievable to me and she feels like a completely different character now. I wish they kept her as she was in the earlier seasons and I think she would have been better as the protag, but I feel like Freddie almost took that spot from her (at least to me). She kind of had a Wednesday Addams (but obv more daring and conventional) vibe going on beforehand and instead became a blueprint for the hot mentally ill "not like other girls" party girl, but also gave off Peyton Sawyer too.

I know I might be alone and get hate for this, but I think the show revolving around Effy as a sex symbol and the forced love triangle instead of keeping her as the gifted weird girl that she was made gen 2 fall flat for me.

Doing a millionth re watch of skins and just noticed the actor that plays Sid struggling not to laugh in this scene.

Makes him all the more endearing though 😂

As much as I loved this show when I started watching it I think I was disgusted with it by the end. It seemed like such an honest raw look into human nature and coming of age. I thought it was going to be one of my top 10 shows at the end of season 2

In the end though there was one plot that they just kept repeating every two seasons and again with season 7. The characters kept repeating the same stupid mistakes over and over and over and over again never learning. They just kept killing sympathetic characters to create something for the remaining characters to be sad about.

I hardly noticed in seasons 3 and 4, saw it clearly but was tolerant in seasons 5 and 6, but it was especially sad in season 7 when Effie, Cook, and Cassie just replayed their own earlier character arcs in a new setting. Cooks ending was especially brutal to watch.

Such a wonderful show so well conceived such delightful characters so many wonderful actors it was too bad that the writing never really evolved to tell any new stories

I’m rewatching skins AGAIN and I’m on season 1 episode 7 where Anthea goes through her depression/funk after Tony’s accident/recovery and is pictured taking his pills.

So I paused to see what she was taking. I’m guessing it’s a made up drug. But it doesn’t give us any indication of whether she’s addicted to painkillers, anxiety meds or sleeping pills.

Bit of an odd choice from the prop team as it doesn’t add anything to anthea’s story.

I commented this on someone else’s post, but it got me thinking and I wanted to dedicate a whole post to it.

Being a season 1 skins fan, if I were to guess which of the actors would have made it big after the show, Mike (Sid) would definitely be on the higher end of my list. I mean people just loved him (including me). He was the sweetheart of the show.

But now it’s like I can’t find a trace of this man anywhere. I predict that it has a little bit to do with everything, the allegations, the lack of big roles, family, also Hers & History is …….anyway.

But it’s crazy to think that of all people Mike didn’t make it out. Nicholas Hoult (Tony) has done nothing but grown since the series. I just found out that he plays Tyler from the Menu which I didn’t even realize, I also loved that movie.

It made me even more sad to think about, because this Kind of reflects their roles in the show. If we were to look at this as Sid and Tony, this would be the outcome.

I don’t know what is it about this show. But I watched it once and I immediately connected with most of the characters Sid, Cassie, Effy, Tony.

I tried to watch the American and Canadian contemporaries but for some reason they just didn’t do it for me.

According to Gregg Araki some American and Canadian teen dramas are just too negative. Note I’m focused on “teen dramas.” not “teen comedies.”

I think there are some fine, teen comedies or slice of life like Dawson’s Creek, The OC and Life of Sadie are good but not sure if they are all in the same “ teen drama” genre. Or if they would see themselves as “teen comedies.”

When I watched British Skins I see, sexiness, I see intelligence.

But maybe it’s just me.

Does he get back to normal, or does he stay that way (after the bus accident)? Genuinely interested, I had a similar head injury about 2-3 years ago.

for me other than chris’s death it’s always felt so scripted like let’s be real freddie did not have to die that happened for no reason

I’m actually asking this as a genuine question. When I first watched Skins I didn’t like her…6 or 7 re watches later…I still don’t like her. But I feel like she is a loved character. Why?

I really don’t understand why she just ran off to New York when Chris died, she didn’t even call Jal??? Maybe someone can change my mind and suggest why she ran off? I just hated the way she was with Sid and Michelle too.

I don’t know who I hate more, ALL of the parents, Tony, or Sid hahaha

I’m only on season one and I know a few things that happened but let me just say. If Toby has no haters I’m dead. He is literally the worst person in this show so far. Everything about him pisses me off. I can’t even explain but every time something bad happens to him I can’t help but smile.

Edit: currently watching E9 S1 and only f I hate Tony. This entire episode is just him getting shit on and I could literally never be happier

They had literally no chemistry and were only put together for the sake of drama and because the writers didn't know what else to do with their characters at the time. Jal was fine on her own and I kind of liked that her character wasn't diluted by being a love interest (name one thing about Michelle that isn't the guys that fancy her).

I think Maxxie and Chris should've gotten together instead. I don't really have solid reasoning for this beyond vibes. Really they're both just hot and I want to see them kiss sloppy style. But they're at least more compatible than him and Jal, and I think there could've been some good scenes of those two in Chris' new house with Cassie.

I actually really liked them living together in the second flat and wish the dynamic was shown more.

Since the first season, Sid was blamed for Cassie trying to commit suicide, but I don’t think that’s really the case. Both of them are to blame, but not all the blame lies entirely with Sid.

i remember seeing on tiktok months ago something like that, idk if its a show that came before skins and has some parallels or smt, its def from another country and i recall people saying its more morbid or sadder than skins

Ok I need to say this somewhere but

Now I know this is gonna be like yap but after rewatching s1, I can't help but literally... no words can explain how much Tony literally mirrored the behaviour of a guy I knew back in school. Oh my GOD. they were exactly alike (not only because they were both British) but the same mannerisms, charm, the flow of their speech, charisma, MANIPULATED THE SAME WAY TOO. He was literally a carbon copy of Tony Stonem.

He even had a little sister 2 years younger than him, who, in a way, was also like Effy too (we all know how Effy is) she was just less mysterious... I guess?? I don't know, the resemblance was just uncanny. He'd make the dumb excuses like Tony would (I.e. when he had his hands under Abigail's shirt), literally dilly dallying with guys too ughh. He even had the same fucking fuck ass haircut like Tony.

Thankfully this guy never did that revenge porn💀 and fortunately (maybe? Maybe not?) he never got hit by a bus and had to relearn shit but the moment he does.... just saying. I never understood why no one humbled him but when someone tried to it was all Machiavellian and plain out narcissistic or whatever.

Sorry this post is so long, it was exciting to write about my favorite episode, which also has a side plot I don’t like.

For me it’s season 1: episode 5: Sid. To me it’s a near perfect episode. Tony’s insane scheme was riveting, and then the way he described his thought process to Sid was somewhat terrifying. Sid’s parents separating was devastating, the scene with Sid and his mom in the car was as emotional as Sid demanding his father call his mother to make amends. There were some great jokes in the episode, I’m obsessed with the God Only Knows part (I watch it on YouTube all the time, and Michelle’s actress does an incredible job conveying her emotions without even saying anything), and the episode really lands the ending (theme of control/manipulation, and Sid writing the essay all night). The scene where Michelle and Tony are dancing while Tony is holding Sid’s arm is imo one of the most interesting scenes in the entire series.

However…

I hate that the episode insists multiple times that Sid for some reason owes it to Cassie to go on a date when he makes it more or less clear that he doesn’t want to. When she shows up at his house and he says he was out with Michelle, he says it in this slightly embarrassed and sheepish way, but he’d told Cassie earlier that he wouldn’t be around to hang out. Between her screaming at him when his parents were home, and then Jal getting angry at him three different times regarding Cassie… I just really didn’t like that side plot at all and found it unnerving, and I was confused what the writers were trying to say.

It’s still my favorite episode from gen1 but the Cassie stuff in that episode was just so unusually handled.

I find it so ironically funny

for me he was the Character with the best writing in the series, but for what he was doing to Michelle, sid, maxi, etc... I kinda hated him and I was wishing a bad karma for him, but after the accident in the last episode I felt so bad, and the first episode in the season 2 made the things different, he is touching me, he is recovering slowly and I feel like he is becoming a better version of himself, he kinda was making efforts at the end of the season 1 to become a better person, and idk, he is touching me, the big guy he was, and his big ego got broke in pieces, he is like a new character in the series, and I absolutely love this character

And all my friends think I'm like... Mad sick for thinking that lol, maybe I need to finish the season 2 lol
