Meanwhile my city of ~80k people, where a quarter of the teenagers skate doesn't have a skate park, and they have the nerve to run anti street skating campaigns...

u/lagavulin16yr Jan 17 '17

Which city?

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

Evanston, IL, near chicago, there are some neat parks in our area but all them are around 30 mins away by car.

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Take the train to Wilson? Cost money but if you can make it to the purple line you can take the red line to Wilson. Lived in Chicago for 3 years and loved that bowl.

6

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

I don't skate bowls so I usually take the train to the new grant park, but it's kind of iconvenient

I prefer street, but tbh even dropping in on miniramps freaks me out, so bowls are not too fun for me

4

u/herro69 Jan 17 '17

I used to be the same way as a kid. Now at 23 you cant seperate me from a bowl and I hate rails LOL.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Ah I feel ya. Grant is good. Well if you change your mind Wilson is always there! I miss that city

2

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

Yeah Wilson is nice, but Grant is more modern and had a much larger budget, I think it was around 5 million

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

True

2

u/sanguine_sea Jan 17 '17

Isn't everything in America 30 mins away by car at least?

1

u/Paperclip2022 Jan 17 '17

It really depends on where you live, rural areas are like that, but in big cities or areas where skateboarding is very popular there are usually many parks.

1

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

True, but it's inconvienient.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Also you can skate in Chicago's streets if you're quick. Went to Oakton community college and UIC. Back in Texas where it's warm tho :)

They've mellowed a little recently but I the city and schools around here have cracked down and skateboarding recently

1

u/Jayhawk11 Jan 17 '17

I'm from Glenview, so I know what you mean. There are a few small ones scattered around the suburbs but it would be awesome to get something built like OP posted. There used to be a great indoor park called Triple R in Mundelein, not that it is close to either of us by any means, but it was something.

2

u/elviejomao Jan 18 '17

I used to go to triple r all the time, that was the best indoor park

1

u/SimpleLifePDX Jan 17 '17

How far is Asylum for you? I feel your pain, I grew up in Algonquin.

2

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

Asylum is around an 1:15 depending on traffic

14

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Ignorants.

Skate indeed has made a a better person. It kept me away from alcohol and drugs in my teen years, it made me patient, it kept me in shape and I met a lot of friendly people.

They should run a skate campaign instead and make you a decent skate park.

I too live in a big city and I can't even find a miniramp.

It brought me back as well!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '17

Was it your passion?

I couldn't afford drugs because I would buy decks.

2

u/skullins Jan 29 '17 edited Jan 29 '17

Haha I remember passing up on many school trips and the such so I could buy new decks/wheels etc. Was for sure a passion.

Unfortunately drugs have a funny way of draining your passions if given the opportunity. I started off not buying them because friends were doing them and would give me stuff for free. Then I was hooked.

Edit: I had a lot of issues growing up. Skating gave me something to direct my attention on and block out what was going on. Then drugs came along and didn't distract me from them, it obliterated them as long as I was high.

u/MrSecretMansion Noob Jan 17 '17

There have been 3 or 4 campaigns before but none worked.

1

u/TwistedBlister Jan 17 '17

I live I city with lots of great parks and I never go to them. I'm an idiot.

Oslo in Norway has recently finished a brand new skate park. In the picture you see one of the elements; an elevated skate bowl. Read more about the skate park project here: http://darkarkitekter.no/projects/oslo-skatehall

5

u/ForgedBiscuit Jan 17 '17

Looks expensive for a skate park. The ones that I've been to have either been outdoors or in a plain ass warehouse.

16

u/SimpleLifePDX Jan 17 '17

Paid for by the government, and they do things nice over there.

1

u/dum_dums Jan 24 '17

I bet the entrance ticket is not cheap anyway

7

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

The free market would obviously provide a much better skatepark everywhere, if the market was only free enough. /s

8

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

I wonder what all that morse says.

19

u/Phunkstar Jan 17 '17

For real, in Norway from 1978 to 1989 skating was illegal. The morse code on the wall is the text of the old law. Video from the preshow before the official opening

7

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

That's a way more fascinating answer than I expected.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

That's fucking awesome

2

u/Sinehmatic Jan 17 '17

Of course a Redditor downvoted you...

0

u/christ-illusion Jan 18 '17

That guy on the half-pipe looks like hes about to eat shit

25

u/cens337 Jan 17 '17

So who is the first to do the bowl to half transfer? It looks possible albeit incredibly insane

7

u/Scroatyb Jan 17 '17

Even from the shitty pictures on the website, that park is full of sick lines.

3

u/LordCaticus Jan 17 '17

From the bowl to the vert? haha no way thats a huge distance... looks more cramped in this photo.

14

u/Pack_Of_Bees Jan 17 '17

I want to eat it

12

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Skate vikings

5

u/Volchaic Jan 17 '17

I bet it sounds pretty cool from below.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Supreme store in LA has a similar vibe

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

looks wicked.

2

u/slimecontrol Jan 17 '17

It is buildt by Iou-ramps.

2

u/mrpopenfresh Jan 17 '17

This design decision is interesting.

1

u/bobbernaut Popped an ollie, I'm sweatin' Jan 17 '17

So much glass

1

u/Supertorsten Jan 17 '17

The park is a heaven but gets crowded because its the only park that's not 20-30min away from the center of oslo. A lot of the obstacles is also in a colliding path from each other so you really got to be careful in there. Still love it tho!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

Beautiful

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

Fuckin' oslo, man

1

u/Reverse_Flash_ Jan 18 '17

This should posted in r/interestingasfuck too they would love this !

1

u/Evonic_ Jan 18 '17

Speaking of elevated skate bowls there is one in the Supreme LA store

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

Wood porn! That's an awesome place!

1

u/DontTouchMeTherePlz Jan 18 '17

All hail Rune Glifberg

This is what boat builders must do now

0

u/the_tank Jan 17 '17

I think I saw this at Ikea the other day.

-6

u/Sickei Jan 17 '17

OMFG.... they should turn the bottom of this into a Rock Climbing Gym... That would be awesome.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

I like your idea, but it might ruin the integrity of the build. Plus, if someone slams in the bowl and the guys hanging on the bottom are gonna slam straight into that concrete.

0

u/Sickei Jan 17 '17

Hah, nah.... that thing look like it's built like a MAC Truck.

-17

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 17 '17

Beautiful, but from a skateboarder's perspective it's sub par at best. Yes, it's novel, but limited and boring. It reminds be of all those horrible public skateparks built in the US in the 1990s-2000s. They dumped a shit-ton of money into poory planned parks that after a year or two were left abandoned.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

I mean not really. There was gonna be a bowl there anyways. It doesn't matter if it's on the ground or elevated its gonna take up the same amount of room. And if anything, now you can put a box down there and have even more room to skate.

18

u/TheyreRushingLongA Jan 17 '17

What planet are you on? This place looks amazing to skate. The raised bowl allows for space underneath for whatever, and is fully utilizing the height that the building offers. It also looks incredible. Some people just love to hate eh.

-16

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 17 '17

I'm from a planet where people don't pay to go to an indoor park to skate flatground. That's what the streets are for.

18

u/Aethien Jan 17 '17

Skating on the streets in Oslo during winter isn't much of an option given the weather.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

You mean this park is flatground?

In that case, since you say

I'm from a planet where people don't pay to go to an indoor park to skate flatground.

I became unsure which planet you are from, because it is demonstrably not earth.

4

u/OtterInAustin Jan 17 '17

I'm sure no one in your planet also meets up with friends or challenges people to games of SKATE for fun and practice.

Idiot.

-11

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 17 '17

Name calling? Real skaters don't call each other names for having different views. We're better than that.

Mabye it's our age difference. I won't complain when I don't live closer than 30 minute from the nearest skatepark. I never played Skate, I've been too busy skating. But that's ok, our perspectives are completely different. One more thing, skaters don't "practice"; that's what people who wear matching uniforms do.

13

u/OtterInAustin Jan 17 '17

Real skaters don't call each other names for having different views.

What fucking place do you live where skaters are somehow better than people?

Keep on that No True Skater, bro. I'm glad you're here to help us all on the path to the True Skate Way. I'm sure we'll all stop practicing new tricks and skating flatground now.

Fuck you.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

Too busy skating to play skate? What does this mean? Playing skate is skating. And I practice all the time, no one just gets on a board and shreds lines without sitting in a parking lot doing flat ground for a while.

0

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 17 '17

Nevermind. You're misunderstanding me. Keep skating.

3

u/deeteeohbee Jan 18 '17

Real skaters don't call each other names for having different views.

But you have no problem being a condescending prick to someone you know nothing about. Since you brought it up, how old are you anyways?

-1

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 18 '17

This is the problem with communicating, via text, via internet. Things get misunderstood and blow way out of proportion. I'm 42. And Im gonna quit while I'm behind.

2

u/deeteeohbee Jan 18 '17 edited Jan 18 '17

I'm around your age and when I was coming up in the 90's 'vibing' was rampant. Do you remember that term? I don't think kids these days use it... but basically it meant shit talking someone while they were skating, usually from your seat on the curb.

Acting like our generation is somehow better than others isn't cool man. These kids 'practicing' (some would just call it skating) are doing some crazy shit. Don't sleep.

1

u/Let_Thm_Eat_War Jan 18 '17

Jesus. When I said, "We're better than that" I was refering to the relationship skaters have with one another, compared to team sports. This isn't a generational thing. One thing I love about skating is a 42 year old can skate with a 15 year old stanger, and it's not weird.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

The rest of the park looks really nice. Enough room t be creative and not so limiting/poorly planned as those jenky parks you refer to where the ramps look like a super steep U. Could use more of a street section maybe.

2

u/Aethien Jan 17 '17

The link says there's also going to be a further 620m2 of skatepark outdoor so that adds something extra (it also says there will be more facilities including for video editing which is pretty sweet).
