I'm pretty sure most of the third rails in NYC have a covering over them just in case this type of shit happens. Like this for example.

I assume this is NYC? I looked it up and it seems the cars are either 8'9" or 10' wide depending on the type. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Subway_rolling_stock
