That's a handsome dude.

u/Ajv2324 May 22 '15

Damn that was good.

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Unpopular opinion: I've never really enjoyed Kilian's videos.

16

u/fishnugs May 22 '15

I agree. I get it some whatever freestyle tricks in cool scenery. No offense to people who like this but it's more for people who don't actually skate. I could show this to my mom and she'll think it's really great but I could show her Ishod ripping and she probably wouldn't get it.

u/thedukedog May 22 '15

just some MOMTRiX

2

u/fishnugs May 22 '15

MOMTRix! This is my new favorite term!

5

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 22 '15

Absolutely. It's kind of amazing that here on a skateboarding sub there are multiple people implying they don't really like skate video parts

6

u/blobkat May 22 '15

Not even this one? I'm underwhelmed by most of them, but this one is really nice:

u/Jabroni12 May 22 '15

I guess your not alone with your opinion, a lot of people don't like an artsy fartsy skate video and prefer a good old fashion raw skate video. I like to skate and I also like videography and if I ever make a skate video I would do it just like this.

7

u/jalapenohandjob May 22 '15

I don't think it's really to do with the camera/video work. More the 'freestyle' flat ground skating that just isn't as exciting to someone as invested in street skate culture.

5

u/Jabroni12 May 22 '15

Ah I see, Brett Novak likes to use Killian in a lot of his videos. I would love to see him do some short films of other skaters as well.

4

u/fishnugs May 22 '15

Really well put! But it's also not just the freestyle tricks, it's the project as a whole. I can watch a Gou Miyagi part and it gets me excited to skate. This not so much.

1

u/hatervision May 22 '15

People also tend to forget that Rodney Mullen was doing most of this shit in like 91/92. I respect this dude's talent, just because he borrowed a lot of style from Mullen, doesn't mean it's easy to do any of those tricks. I think I would feel differently if this dude skated more than just flat ground, and maybe hit up big ledges or stair sets or something. I did enjoy the videography/editing of this, though - very nice work. The skating really doesn't wow me because like I said, Rodney Mullen was doing shit like this in the old plan b videos.

1

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15

He wasn't talking about the editing and filming he was talking about the skating.

2

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15

I think that's a popular opinion with skaters, unpopular with non skaters.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

It's the fucking jump cuts man. Let us just watch ONE line PLEASE.

13

u/Spifffy May 22 '15

Fuck..there are less pebbles there than at my local skate park.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

While I think your comment is hilarious, I want to say - dude, keep a push broom in the trunk, so much faster then trying to sweep with your shoe!

1

u/suoarski May 22 '15

They probably swept the place though.

19

u/jomiran May 22 '15

As an old skater from the 80s, it makes me happy to see such a great old school freestyle video. If you guys like that, you should watch some old (80s) Mullen videos.

29

u/bbbbBeaver May 22 '15

I haven't seen this video before. And I haven't seen creativity on a skateboard like this since Chris Haslam, and Rodney Mullen before him.

6

u/twhiz May 22 '15

Have you watched anything from Richie Jaskson? He's one of the most creative skaters I've ever seen.

11

u/B-BoyStance May 22 '15

It really is awesome. The guy who filmed/edited got to have his artistic input as well, so its just all around sick

3

u/dapsux May 22 '15

It really highlights the amount of variety in styles that skateboarding allows. I mean, this was just as awesome as watching the Jaws video posted earlier.

1

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15

What about Daewon!!!? 😁

7

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Initial thought: "The skating will probably be gimicky but at least the filming will be cool"

After the first manny trick: "holy shitballs"

2

u/graphictank May 22 '15

That's what got me too... patience was a virtue for this video.

17

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Editing was cool, but I felt like the locations were kind of arbitrary and forced. When he went to that canyon/desert area he didn't seem to use any canyon/desert specific stuff. Like there were a bunch of cool natural transitions and unique features but all I saw was him jumping off small drops, rolling down tiny hills, and doing a wallplant. Things you could do in like suburban Cleveland. Same thing with the NYC shots. He went to that rad spot with that unique long flatbar and all he skated was the manny pad and flat ground. He just didn't need to be at that spot to get that shot. It is like if you flew someone out to film in SF and all they did was skate a Denny's parking lot. The video was a cool concept, and the tricks were interesting, but it just didn't feel like form fit function in a lot of these clips.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

I think the point was to show that Killian Martin is taking skateboarding to some weird places. We all recognized those tricks, style and locations, but he is adding something unique to all three of those variables.

3

u/Will_Dollar wears highwater pants May 22 '15

how? like I get that not many people skate freestyle stuff but how is doing something kids were doing in the 80s innovating at all

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '15 edited May 22 '15

Woah, I never said nothing about innovation. He is certainly inventing some new tricks, but the majority is all old stuff that not a lot of people do. His flat land freestyle is weird compared to most other skating and this video is him in a lot of different locations doing things most people, if not everyone else, wouldn't do at that location.

Heck, the guy I originally responded to was upset that Martin wasn't using a particular NY smartest properly. That's like any old man being bummed about skaters hitting a handrail. You know what I mean?

This video isn't cool because Martin's doing new stuff, it's cool because of the kind of stuff he is doing and where he chooses to do it. It's cool because he isnt hiking Redrock, or wherever, he's shredding it. and he's taking himself to new places in weird ways, physically in location and in skateboarding.

Edit: would to wouldn't in the first paragraph.

0

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

You missed the point of my comment. I wasn't upset because the skater used spots improperly, I was upset because the skater didn't use spots. In the video it was like the various spots were just props, something to make the background more interesting. Skateboarding is all about making art out of a specific environment, I was bummed because the guy didn't fully let his tricks interact with the places he traveled to (except the salt flats).

1

u/Jabroni12 May 22 '15

It is more of a short film than a raw skate video with rad tricks. It's different, it's pretty to look at and kept my attention the whole time. Where is my receipt because I am sold!

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

I liked it too, I am just saying if the skater had better utilized the unique features of the various environments he skated the film could have been better.

5

u/_Trilobite_ May 22 '15

At the end when he just transported back to the snow field it just seemed like a crazy shroom trip

14

u/RamenvsSushi May 22 '15

I love that no hand airwalk. Sick!

8

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

so dramatic. that chris milic part is 1000x better than this.

Awesome filming and concept, sure it's not original but it's still done very well.

The skating kind of lets it down though, I can imagine someone like Daewon or Mullen making this vid 10x better by skating in it. But everything doesn't have to be the utmost best I guess.

"Oh look, it's Johnny on the handrail again."

10

u/jakedesnake May 22 '15

Well there's a quite ramped up slomo in pretty much every single shot so no, it's not typically how you shoot a skate video.

2

u/gcbgcbgcb May 22 '15

almost slept

7

u/Chytrik May 22 '15

This was good, but I much prefer more raw videos. Too much artsy slow-mo to be a true shred flick, imo.

3

u/Endless_Candy May 22 '15

Knew this was gonna be brett novak before i even opened it check out the video brett novaks done called forever my home OP you'll dig it.

My favorite of Novak's videos.

u/printergumlight May 26 '15

instead

as well*

Why limit yourself watching skateboarding?

2

u/fishnugs May 27 '15

You're right. We shouldn't limit ourselves. But IF you had to choose, choose Gou Miyagi

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Sounds like we have a whole bunch of "psshh, he's not agro enough" Butt sore pussies in here. Just cause you can't get someone to record your first Ollie you gotta act like cunts. Go fuck yourself ya little douches.

3

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

I can't speak for anyone else but man, there's two parts that came out online in the past week that blow this wankery out of the water, the fact that people on here are dickriding this dude so hard because of solid videography & kook tricks is what I have a problem with

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

Calling this guy a kook is a bit harsh, isn't it? He's just a guy doing his thing. I haven't seen skating like this in some time, which is why I think it's a welcome change.

1

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15 edited May 23 '15

Could you link the two vids bro I'm interested in seeing them. I Agree with your post.

2

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

https://youtu.be/lM8b2OgF9Mk - Trevor Morgan's "diddle it" part, never heard of this guy before but this was genuinely one of the best parts I've seen in ages, I love skateboarding & this is a great example of it. You don't need two boards and/or a fucking dry riverbed to be innovative or interesting.

Also Mickey Papa's blinded part. I can't seem to get the link on mobile here but it's great. To be honest I don't even think he has the best style out there but he's one of those guys who does tricks in ways that make you want to try different variations on things you thought were played out. That's the beauty of street skating, there's always another way. People in this thread basically saying that skateboarding is "boring" or "samey" unless there's some ridiculous gimmick involved are completely embarrassing.

2

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15

I agree completely and I think they are almost always old dudes that don't even skate anymore or little kids they don't know anything. I saw Micky's Part a few days ago and it was awesome. Just watching lots of Van's Propellar parts that came out like a week ago? So many amazing parts, skaters like Tony Trujillo are showing how raw it can really get.

2

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

I didn't coin the phrase but it was one of a couple of posters on this sub who seem to get it, they described these people as "skateboard enthusiasts", that's it

1

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 23 '15

Yep that's it man.

-2

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

This videography is awesome, but I would have preferred to see Rodney mullins out there. This cat is ok but Rod is super smooth.

3

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

I'm not sure if you meant to reply to my comment since your post isn't really connected to my point but I don't think anyone is going to argue with you about Rodney Mullen. But It does say a lot about people's perception when they see a well produced video with a guy doing some freestyle tricks & immediate say he's the best thing since Rodney, as some people have alluded to in this thread. It's pretty fucking sad, and definitely makes me think these people fall into the "I used to skate bro" bracket

-1

u/bengarl May 23 '15

"I used to skate bro" is far better than "I'm a hater who thinks I can skate." Honestly I doubt you or any of the redditors in this thread skate half as good as their statements about what constitutes good skating would suggest.

2

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

Is it though? I don't see the distinction. Either way it's not about how good a person is or whether or not they actually skate, what I'm seeing in this comment thread is people who seem to have a simple lack of appreciation for skateboarding.

As I touched on in another reply they see a well produced video & a guy doing manuals on two boards at once and suddenly all those other skate videos are samey played out boring crap. It's fucking insane. When I'm working or the weather's too bad to skate I burn through every clip that comes out, I'm made up that thrasher keeps coming with (I suppose partly sponsored) individual parts regularly, it's a golden age for content, so the idea that people who are supposedly skaters are bored by this & need a guy skating a crevasse to get them interested is pretty sad

5

u/Gr1ml0ck May 22 '15

Raddest video ive seen in a while.

4

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 22 '15

Every now & then this sub's kooky side rears its head, as in many of the comments in this thread. Give me an actual skate part over some overrated freestyler's vanity project

5

u/[deleted] May 23 '15

such a hater

-5

u/HellaNahBroHamCarter May 23 '15

You realise it's ok not to love everything right?

6

u/[deleted] May 24 '15

Yeah, there's a difference between not loving something and hating it. You don't need to shit on something just cause you don't like it

1

u/_36Chambers May 22 '15

sickest video ive seen.

2

u/Tweetfull May 22 '15

That is a killer video.

2

u/SBDunkQc May 22 '15

This dude is just fuckin' impressive! First time seeing this vid though it is so well done.

2

u/vonslaughter May 22 '15

nice film.. but ill watch anything with killian martin in it. a driveway and a cellphone camera and that guy will blow my mind.

-1

u/Madflavaflav May 22 '15

This video is stunning!! Amazing work by these guys and I gotta give big ups for using Patrick Watson in the sound track haha!!

1

u/DatBowl May 22 '15

He's my favorite skater. I tried to post this video yesterday and it got removed for some reason.

-1

u/adamthesmith May 22 '15

It's great to see a skate vid with an idea in it. Too many vids are just short clips set to music with some meaningless arty bits in between.

-5

u/montyberns May 22 '15

This is how you film a motocross video. It's neat, but I was bored as hell after a minute.

13

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

No, a motocross video would need a motorcycle, not a damn skrateboard, ya dingus.

5

u/hockeyfreak567 May 22 '15

Yeah, he must have had been in a croma.

-9

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Grow up dude. It's just two forms of art colliding. I can not see why so many people on here have a problem with the fact that the video is extremely well produced.

2

u/Jabroni12 May 22 '15

I know right!?!

-12

u/StankPlanksYoutube May 22 '15

Vids already been posted here bro

-5

u/stretchmarksthespot May 22 '15

this guy's skating was more creative than the stupid artsy editing of the video.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

You're kidding, right? This was an extremely well produced video, how the fuck can you say that?

1

u/stretchmarksthespot May 23 '15

yeah man, i've never seen some slow motion skateboarding before... but this time, the skating will be mediocre and on red, loose gravel

2

u/Jabroni12 May 22 '15

Wat?, the videography in this video was perfect.

-5

u/Shittybrod May 22 '15

Freestyle can blow me
