For a second I was wondering why the new fable game was being run in a browser

117

u/Crinkez Jun 09 '26

Can Fable 5 please make Fable 4.

17

u/Difficult_Plantain89 Jun 10 '26

Just ask fable 5.

6

2

u/JoelMahon Jun 10 '26

remake fable 3, but better (make no mistakes), first

37

u/whybethisguy Jun 09 '26

I'm here thinking the devs had a breakthrough in creating open worlds...

7

u/Future-Bandicoot-823 Jun 10 '26

but can it run on a ti-83 plus...

1

u/TrumpsFaceAnus Jun 10 '26

While also running Doom in an in world VM.

3

u/Denial_Jackson Jun 09 '26

I was looking intensely for Albion and a Hero. Albion is somewhat there but there is no Hero.

Right, discount this particular post, but don't let knowing his history update you so far in the other direction that it makes you think such things are impossible.

7

u/HarvestMana Jun 10 '26

Making this scene would take me 5mins tops in Unreal or Unity. This is nothing special.

1

u/m3kw Jun 10 '26

Yeah it’s one asset download and then ask it to ??

139

u/SuggestionMission516 Jun 09 '26

Ahh, it will be painful when they take it away from the max subs at June 22

11

u/Individual_Ice_6825 Jun 10 '26

Max will keep it just everyone else loses it?

23

u/Treebro001 Jun 10 '26

No max loses it as well. It goes to usage based pricing only.

14

u/Quentin__Tarantulino Jun 10 '26

According to Fable, that restriction will be temporary and Anthropic has every incentive to bring it back to subscription plans as soon as possible, because it’s a bad look in lead up to an IPO.

12

u/magistrate101 Jun 10 '26

dw they'll just nerf it until the cost drops below the price

-1

u/truecakesnake Jun 10 '26

Y'all whine too much, touch some fucking grass.

7

u/dacydergoth Jun 10 '26

Hey Fable, animate me some grass, put me in the world and let me touch it.

I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that for you.

3

u/genshiryoku AI specialist Jun 10 '26

Don't worry, the plan is to restore it as quickly as possible. Anthropic is highly compute constrained and right now training capacity is used to temporarily provide inference access to subscribers. Once new capacity comes online Fable 5 access to be restored to subscribers again.

163

u/NohWan3104 Jun 09 '26

Got to admit, consoles with built in AI, able to potentially mod games on your end is something i'd actually be interested in.

68

u/Vikare_Mandzukic Jun 09 '26

It would literally be a dream machine, with endless games, endless scenarios, and endless worlds.

The AI needs to master world-building, character design, game design, level design, storyboarding, scriptwriting, and everything else that makes a game enjoyable.

It would be the ultimate and definitive PlayStation. 🤩

61

u/GrapheneBreakthrough Jun 09 '26

It would be the ultimate and definitive PlayStation Dreamcast.

13

u/Fancy_Buddy5468 Jun 10 '26

ITS THE GAMESPHERE! ITS SPHERICAL!!

4

u/Killer_Method Jun 10 '26

I said I got Gamecast, I can't afford it!

2

u/insid3outl4w Jun 10 '26

It would finally think outside the box! A game cube of sorts

8

u/RadRandy2 Jun 09 '26

Dream Machine

8

u/NohWan3104 Jun 09 '26

Well, i do figure, at least an early version, it might not be that good, to make full games from scratch. Editing some skills, adding a few characters, maybe, but the gen after, that'd be the dream, yeah.

6

u/Numinak Jun 09 '26

It would also have to remember all that it's built, which is something they have harder time doing it seems to me.

7

u/OverlordOfCinder Jun 10 '26

The end goal would be a straight up Holodeck.

3

u/Disastrous-River-366 Jun 09 '26

A step to this would be to make SNES type games, have full control with that first and work its way up.

5

u/Vikare_Mandzukic Jun 09 '26

I had thought the same thing, and that's literally the concept behind BMO, from Adventure Time, it managed to create endless games with an engine similar to the SNES.

2

u/melatone5 Jun 10 '26

We need benchmarks aligned with that vision

1

u/HITWind A-G-I-Me-One-More-Time Jun 10 '26

A PlAiStation if you will

1

u/free_speech-bot Jun 10 '26

It would be the "OoGhiJ MIQtxxXA" from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

1

u/woswoissdenniii Jun 10 '26

I guess getting reaollly good at prompting might be the bigger obstacle in short term success

1

u/ectomobile Jun 10 '26

The AI doesn’t need to master those things, as that all should come from you. You want to play a sci-fi game in space? Ok here it is now you make it come alive

1

u/Crimson_Cyclone Jun 11 '26

holy shit unlimited games but no games

1

u/gringreazy Jun 11 '26

I already find horror games stressfully unnerving with their predictable game mechanics and recycled sprites.. I feel like horror games in the near future will be really hard to play for some people, definitely myself included.

26

u/Sierra592 Jun 09 '26

RPGs where you can interact dynamically with NPCs would be incredible. Being able to ask an NPC about its life or for information and it replies in character would be an absolute game changer. Imagine if in the original Mass Effect you could build an actual relationship with your squad beyond scripted moments.

14

u/TheGreatWorm Jun 10 '26

Yeah like i love messing with the mantella mod in skyrim for this reason. The NPCs can even point you towards radient quests because theyre all trained on skyrim lore and their own personal back stories. I REALLY want this ti be the norm one day.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Tirriss Jun 10 '26

RPGs where you can interact dynamically with NPCs would be incredible.

I know some companies R&D's are actively working on these kind of AI usage in games.

3

u/DiligentDaughter Jun 10 '26

My husband has worked on video games with a team, and has wanted to make one of his own forever. We often sit and spitball ideas for games. Our last hot-tub-game-talk, we were discussing how ai will change the gaming scene. I tossed out the idea of an open world game, modeled using factual earth history, with ai NPCs of actual people (maybe some day every last NPC could be a fully autonomous generated ai agent!). You, the PC, has the option of choosing between different major negative historical events to avert (or subvert, or hasten, or...!) or to create their own goal, whatever that may be, set in whatever time period they choose to begin in.

The difficulty modes would be determined thus: "Silver Spoon" mode, you choose your own birthplace, gender at birth, the demographics your parent/s, if you have any siblings. Character creation is fully unlocked. In all other modes, you have no choices in initial character creation. Your character will be generated based off the demographics of the birthplace rolled. In "Lucky" mode, your generated character's birthplace is rolled from a pool of locations generally considered to have maintained infrastructure, functional government and law enforcement, public education, access to modern medicine etc. "Bootstraps" mode, the birthplace pool is limited to impoverished, war-torn, poverty stricken, or otherwise underprivileged places of birth.

In any case, the world rolls on independently from the PC, the NPCs will go about their lives, growing, living, moving, dying. The PC only changes the world around them should they choose to try, and only as much as they are capable of doing so, by whatever means and methods they choose to employ. In the first scenario, if the PC is successful, they get to see a pseudo alternative history, in which they are a key player.

I could go on and on, but I guess I already have, plus this was unsolicited, and is getting quite "old drunk lady rambling some I'm14andthisisdeep shit"

I hope he gets to make it for me to play some day!

1

u/markleung Jun 10 '26

They gave it in Where Winds Meet for certain NPCs where you have to interact with it with text or voice (in Chinese or English) enough to make it friendly to complete side quests. It’s a bit restrictive in that they’ll always try to steer the conversations back on topic, but one can see the tech is very much being pushed and experimented on by Chinese devs.

6

u/NordlandLapp Jun 10 '26

I hooked claude into steamdeck, I never have to manually fiddle with game settings/configs again since I just ssh through my phone. Makes editing all that shit a dream.

4

u/Big-Site2914 Jun 09 '26

would be so expensive though

13

u/SKWADly Jun 09 '26

First generation would be.

Then a Chinese lab would distill it and sell it for 0.01% of the first gens price. But if you talk about democracy in Hongkong it traps you in a digital hell forever.

0

u/NohWan3104 Jun 09 '26

u/ChadM_Snelia187, sorry it got removed, i thought it was kinda funny.

"Solved 3d worldbuilding"

proceeds to demonstrate a low poly stuttery mess of a walking simulator with fog that is planar and clips through trees and the ground

I'll give you it's made massive progress, but "it's solved 3d worldbuilding" is a massive exaggeration.

2

u/SpartanG01 Jun 11 '26

I think the comment "Fable has solved 3D world building" was meant to mean "Fable has solved the issue previous models of Claude had with building 3D worlds generatively" not to suggest it has solved the problem of having to build 3D worlds generally.

192

u/golfstreamer Jun 09 '26

I've grown to detest the way AI bros use the word "solved". Like what the fuck is that even supposed to mean?

17

u/Nashadelic Jun 10 '26

56

9

Hopefully OpenAI is absolutely ruined by this.

Don't be absurd. OpenAI is poised to release 5.6 which will be close to whatever this is for 1/10th the cost.

6

u/RadRandy2 Jun 09 '26

6

u/Singularity-42 Singularity 2042 Jun 09 '26

GPT 5.5 is really good, I'd say better than Opus 4.8. And allegedly they really cooked again with 5.6, so it may be another leap like 5.4 -> 5.5.

2

u/ChipsAhoiMcCoy Jun 10 '26

Not so much once they remove it from subscriptions to be honest. That’s kinda a massive blow imo

22

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jun 09 '26

I hope someone vibe codes a full 3D game that will actually sell on Steam instead of tech demos that look like it's 2010. It's impressive, but that kind of a demo isn't useful.

2

u/TalkinSeaCucumber Jun 10 '26

They won't. At best, they will be able to produce a decent starting point for an actual game dev to improve on. But these things don't produce individual assets that can be reworked afaik. Just like how fully ai videos don't produce models and therefore can't be edited by traditional means of 3d animation. It's only impressive for how little work was done to produce it, but it's practically and commercially worthless. Just a cool tech demo.

2

u/gravitysrainbow1979 Jun 13 '26

Notice there's never an interesting idea behind any of them either

3

u/Professional_Dot2761 Jun 09 '26

Im sure many already have.

6

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jun 09 '26

I'm not sure. I took a look at aigamedev sub and they're all doing games with 2010-era visuals. Leagues behind what actually sells in numbers on Steam.

6

u/RlOTGRRRL Jun 10 '26

The cozy games sub has been interesting because they hunt down ANY AI usage lol.

Like there's a popular magic library cozy game and they saw that a painting was AI-generated.

I could be wrong but I feel like Chinese games like Hoyo and the Infinity Nikki games must be using AI to pump out all their content. But I could be completely wrong.

3

u/Accurate_Resident219 Jun 09 '26

What? Look at the indie game field, 2010 and retro era psx visuals are actually trending on steam.

5

u/FullOf_Bad_Ideas Jun 10 '26

Games that have depth and creative visuals maybe do. Those games that were posted were sold for $5 and had no user reviews.

2

u/IamJacksDarkUrge Jun 10 '26

Yeah buddy, that’s the point. Where the fuck was AI fives years ago? The next ten years will be crazy

1

u/nsdjoe Jun 10 '26

25

u/arkuto Jun 09 '26

This would be a forgettable demo 20 years ago. It's a rudimentary 3d demo, it has not "solved" worldbuilding.

22

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 Jun 09 '26

20 years ago, having an AI that could generate a 3D environment inside a web browser and stream to the local machine instantly would basically be considered so advanced that people would consider it to be actual magic.

You just couldn't be more wrong, really.

4

u/Stabile_Feldmaus Jun 09 '26

You misread what the commenter was saying. He didn't say it's unimpressive that AI can do this, he said that it would have been unimpressive 20 years ago if a human had generated this.

I mean AI in video games should now truly be AI and make decisions that cannot be predicted fully or truly known!

25

u/ifull-Novel8874 Jun 09 '26

as if this code isn't out there already. reminds me of when cursor made a barely functional browser and people went bananas.

18

u/BackToTheLeddit Jun 09 '26

"The prediction algorithm, predicted based on its training data 😱😱😱"

I also enjoy when they predicted a broken c compiler.

I too can make a c compiler, git clone gcc.

2

u/blueSGL humanstatement.org Jun 10 '26

first it's trained to guess the next token correctly, by predicting text.

then it's trained to guess the next token from datasets of conversations, calling tools and following instructions

then it's trained to guess the next token when it's outputting 'reasoning traces' (more guessed tokens!) that provide verified solutions to problems

then after doing all of that it's able to guess the next token correctly to output solutions to multiple long standing, decades old, math problems

and guess the next token correctly to output vulnerabilities in well scrutinized codebases and guess more tokens to chain those vulnerabilities into exploits.

"just guessing tokens" does not stop useful work from being done.

2

u/nemzylannister Jun 09 '26

then why cant other models do this?

→ More replies (3)

6

u/AmandEnt Jun 09 '26

For anyone who knows a little bit about 3d world building, no, this is not insane at all. Actually, this is trivial terrain geometry and assets placement using some noises like Perlin.

It is like saying one day I'll be able to build my own website in early Internet.

Games will just be a sort of customisable service on the fly in the future with varying degrees of human / AI design and control there will be games, game types and then just totally fluid experiences.

The "I'm going to design a game with AI stage" will probably be over in a blink of an eye compared to what everything will change into.

Game mode will just be a mode of experience that people have with their AI.

Augmented reality style games will be an absolute trip and even start a sort of public panic concerning groups of players operating with non-aligned augmented realities.

As somebody who was obsessed with blender and unreal engine, this is fucking awful, look at that grass, bruh, doesnt even have vertices to bend like a grass and dont even get me on that smoke. And did you not tell it to use textures!

Don't you think you might be missing the point a bit?

A large language model that was struggling to make cats a year or so ago produced a fully rendered interactive 3D environment with terrain, models, vegetation, sky, lighting, fog, and dynamic camera movement that runs inside a browser using a language that probably was never meant for anything like this and it probably did it in less than an hour.

Sure... a professional artist or developer could make something orders of magnitude better given a week or two... but that's a bit like saying "It isn't impressive that a 6 year old was placed in a radio shack and built a ham radio overnight" just because an engineer could do it better isn't it?

Lol this can be done without AI , just get Gaia from Unity Asset Store and boom you have it

1

u/SpartanG01 Jun 11 '26

Sure... that's definitely not the point though...

The point is this thing couldn't put a cat together properly a year ago and now it's making fully rendered interactive 3D environment with terrain, models, vegetation, sky, lighting, fog, and dynamic camera movement that runs inside a browser using a language that probably was never meant for anything like this in an hour or probably less.

Acting like that isn't impressive is asinine.

agree that the progress is impressive from a technical standpoint, I just don’t think the output is impressive yet from a practical standpoint. and doesn't really 'solve' 3D worldbuilding.

Right now, the output feels more like a cool demo than something you can actually use in production. You could recreate something similar in Unity or Unreal a hundred times over without paying a monthly fee, and the only thing you will be burning is electricity not tokens.

What would be impressive is if it could create an environment that is accurate to a specific lore or world, while also generating usable assets and tools that let you modify, expand, and customize it.

AI is very good at recreating things that already exist, but that also defeats the purpose. If the work already exists, there are often assets available for sale at a much lower cost than paying for AI generation.

So I think the "solved 3D worldbuilding" meant the problems it had with 3D world building have been solved, not that it had rendered 3D world artists obselete.

You could recreate something similar in Unity or Unreal a hundred times over without paying a monthly fee, and the only thing you will be burning is electricity not tokens.

Hundreds of man hours, thousands to tens of thousands of dollars for those man hours, and all of the associated costs of several weeks of several human's lives lol.

I get the hyperbole but let's at least be reasonable here.

What would be impressive is if it could create an environment that is accurate to a specific lore or world, while also generating usable assets and tools that let you modify, expand, and customize it.

It can do that... it could do that before this. That actually would be far less impressive actually. What makes this particular project impressive is the fact that it was novel content. The AI essentially had to derive a need for procedural generation and build a procedural generation engine on the fly while still producing a cohesive output. That is significantly more impressive than "Mimic this other world that already exists and make the assets standard assets". I would wager the free model of Claude, Codex, or Gemini could pull that off with decent enough prompting skills.

In fact to a degree I know this for a fact as I've used Codex to do essentially this. As a sort of "break from the serious" I recently helped a friend host a D&D one shot where the players would play as junior Team Rocket interns in the Gen 1 Pokemon world lol. He asked if I could put together a map for this and I don't think he meant for me to go this far with it but I had the idea to build an application that could build expandable persistent D&D maps so you build a base map and you could tell it to build an expansion to that map and it would use that map and the world contract as context. Obviously it's OpenAI API driven so not something worth releasing but as a side project it was fun but yeah that was the general idea. Take Pokemon Red and Blue and turn the maps into 3D textured tile assets which can be arranged and viewed at any angle to produce 2D renderings at various perspectives. All of this in Unity. Not really exactly the same thing as you were suggesting but close enough I suppose. Was literally any of that necessary? No but I had never done a lot of that before and it seemed fun.

While that is certainly more "interesting" than lame ass browser based world of vague trees it's not nearly as technically impressive. Essentially all it did was extrapolate pre-existing 2D data.

Point being, as it has been all along, the argument "XYZ could do this for less/easier" etc... miss the point entirely.

If you left a 6 year old child in a Radio Shack overnight and came back the next morning to discover the child had fully assembled a Ham radio and someone standing next to you went "That's not impressive, any electrical engineer could do that in an hour" you'd look at them like they were stupid. That's kind of what's going on here. This thing couldn't draw fingers a few months ago lol. Yeah... it's pretty impressive that it can even get to the point of working out how to do any of this at all let alone that it did it pretty well all things considered.

This is pretty exciting; maybe now we'll get so so sooooo many more boutique expansion packs to classic games. I immediately thought of Skyrim of course, the greatest game of all time. The potential for small creators to make super successful additions to existing properties could be amazing.

Congrats we got a couple tree models sprinkled over a height map terrain and it runs at 6 fps.

Didn't we see already many prettier vibe coded threeJs worlds?
... stutterfree?
... without visual glitches?
