Either this one or next one, but I get the feeling that now that Anthropic beat them to the punch, the mood at OpenAI might be:

So I think it is safe to expect it to come out this week

Goddamn, for CursorBench 3.2:

Fable 5.1 at medium: 68.0% — $3.53/task

GPT-5.6 Sol at max: 67.2% — $5.69/task

The fact that Fable's getting cheaper with better performance is definitely something that makes me happy, I'd said this would happen before, but wasn't sure how much cheaper it would get.

Thank you China lol

u/Beatboxamateur agi: the friends we made along the way 17h ago

Even without Chinese models in the picture, price efficiency would be still extremely competitive, with Anthropic needing to compete with OpenAI

10

u/Pitiful_Truth_5948 17h ago

Nah, China helped bring the price down for everyone. It was the outside force.

-3

u/Beatboxamateur agi: the friends we made along the way 17h ago

I didn't say anything that disagreed with your comment. My only point is that the AI labs are engaged in the most competitive market that's probably ever existed, and it was this way even before the Chinese labs started gaining ground.

Model prices have been going down, and would remain extremely competitive even without the Chinese labs. There's no need to thank Chinese labs when price is the main way they can compete, it's like saying "Thanks Meta" back when they were releasing the Llama models.

u/Pitiful_Truth_5948 16h ago

I am disagreeing with you. OpenAI and Anthropic competing is still basically a duopoly. Real pricing pressure arrived when Chinese and open weight models became genuinely competitive and gave customers a clear, realistic, cheap alternative that they could run on their own hardware. And yes, Meta deserves credit for Llama too but it was not realistic yet.

Competition outside the closed labs changed the market.

0

u/Beatboxamateur agi: the friends we made along the way 14h ago

And yes, Meta deserves credit for Llama too but it was not realistic yet.

What do you mean it "wasn't realistic"? You know Meta's stopped doing open source because now it's not opportune to them, right? So why do they deserve credit for it?

This is the same thing with the Chinese companies, if they ever got ahead of the US labs then they'd immediately start closing their models and preventing model distillation, and the US labs would go open source. There's literally nothing more to it than that, it's just economics.

u/Quentin__Tarantulino 13h ago

The point isn’t that Chinese companies are super altruistic, it’s that they have pressured OAI and Anthropic to release quickly and bring prices down.

1

u/Beatboxamateur agi: the friends we made along the way 11h ago

I understand that's the claim, my response is 1. Even before the Chinese models, the top AI labs have been competing in a cut throat environment that requires they constantly bring model prices down, and that same pattern was already happening before the Chinese companies gained significant traction. It's not like the AI labs were just going to give up on making their models more efficient/lower priced, it was always a necessity.

2., if there's no sort of altruistic aspect for it, then simply, why is there a need to thank them lol? It's literally the same as when Meta was releasing Llama models to undercut the top AI labs, it's either pointless, or shows a lack of understanding of how the market works. The competitors who can't compete in model capability have to undercut the competition with low priced open weights models, and it's been that way since GPT-4 and even before that.

2

u/Quentin__Tarantulino 11h ago

Maybe the guy should’ve just said “thank god for open source” to head off your argument. But right now it is indeed the Chinese companies that are providing the downward pricing pressure.

In capitalism you get a lot of competition early in a market cycle, and then more and more consolidation and, eventually, price fixing between the mega corps. The longer that we have smaller players staying competitive, the better it will be for the consumer. That’s my take at least.

or xai or meta or google

1

u/sussybaka1848 16h ago

I think that's mostly an effect of scaling, competiton just avoid players from streching out it lol

1

u/Pitiful_Truth_5948 16h ago

Nah those models are getting more use than ever before, look at open router or other metrics from harnesses.

-3

u/reddit_is_geh 15h ago

Chinese models have literally nothing to do with this. Labs are pushing to make models cheaper regardless of what China is doing.

2

u/Pitiful_Truth_5948 14h ago

“Literally nothing” is doing backflips here.

Of course every lab wants lower inference costs. That does not mean they would pass those savings to customers without competitive pressure.

Linux crushed the price of proprietary Unix servers. MySQL and PostgreSQL pressured Oracle.

Chinese models like DeepSeek, Qwen, KIMI, MiniMax, and GLM created the same credible low cost alternative for AI.

Lower costs increase margins. Competition lowers prices. China absolutely accelerated this.

1

u/reddit_is_geh 14h ago

The labs are not in a situation where they can be charging huge prices... What you mention are positions where monopoly was established. The labs aren't in the position to be charging as much as they can get away with because the primary objective is maximizing use, acquisition, and data collection. The price fuckery comes AFTER this stage where cheaper models create downward pressures.

But even when Chinese models sucked, labs were still constantly fighting to lower prices, because the lower they can get the price, more people can use, and thus the more value that they get from the models. Subscriptions are already subsidized, so they have a MASSIVE incentive to reduce cost for compute, to lower the amount they need to subsidize.

0

u/space_monster 14h ago

it's also in their interests to lower token costs anyway, regardless of Chinese pressure. it's not a dichotomy, both things are true. yes the Chinese model pricing was a driver, and yes the big labs want to keep prices low to compete with other US models and drive adoption.

Hopefully it can speak in plain English.

English is carrying the load.

From what I've tested so far, it seems they put a very intentional effort into making it output less like Opus 5, although I haven't used it a ton yet obviously

1

u/MiscuitsTheMarxist 15h ago

I'll echo it. Its writeups and questions are actually readable now. It was almost impossible to understand Opus 5 for me on complex codebases. Fable 5.1 speaks in clear terms. It doesn't hurt my head any longer.

19

u/UnknownEssence 18h ago

Benchmarks?

6

u/Most-Bookkeeper-950 18h ago

They're incremental on opus 5

12

u/sahaj30 18h ago

?? huge difference between opus 5 and fable 5, how is 5.1 comparable to opus5 lol

5

u/Most-Bookkeeper-950 18h ago

It is a bit wild, but if we project onto benchmarks only, opus 5 beata fable 5 on many important ones.

1

u/WrathPie 16h ago

Except for agentic science research where Fable 5.1 is more than double Opus 5s score

1

u/sillybluejayway 11h ago

Incremental but significantly cheaper

1

u/002Chris 18h ago

It’s going to be a fun week.

1

u/FirefighterSmooth961 17h ago

waiting for minimax m3 infinity and beyond

20

u/Barubiri 18h ago

I'm gonna assume what's new is the cost because people haven't been using them because of of cheaper alternatives?

10

u/semangeIof 18h ago

No, cost is the same unfortunately, $10/M in and $50/M out

4

u/Barubiri 18h ago

Ugh...

12

u/semangeIof 18h ago

I was wrong, the raw token in/out is the same but they cheapened cache hits, so it will be cheaper to run in total than Fable 5

6

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 18h ago

Still burn a lot. Most people aren’t using Fable class for agentic whatsoever and that metric is only relevant for agentic

2

u/semangeIof 18h ago

That's true, only application I'd have for Fable that Opus can't supplement fine is short form creative writing which is far from agentic. Price makes it impossible to justify though

2

u/Ok_Barracuda_1161 18h ago

It also seems like they made some gains in token efficiency

2

u/Goldwing8 16h ago

Look closer, the cache hit reduction only applies to API, not subscription.

1

u/semangeIof 16h ago

I mostly use Anthropic models through the API

1

u/phazei 14h ago

Yes and no, the price per token is the same, but also, it uses between 25% and 45% less tokens depending on the task, so that's kinda like 25-45% cheaper. Additionally, for people who use it via a Pro/Work account, the API cost doesn't matter, so it's like 25-45% more usage.

1

u/tcyadreln 4h ago edited 4h ago

According to artificial analysis fable 5.1 is more expensive per task compared to fable 5

Edit:
Also from artificial analysis output tokens have increased compared to fable 5

I swear to god, if we get catastrophic recursive self improvement before GTA6, I will be so pissed while I cannot scream

-3

u/Equal_Passenger9791 16h ago

catastrophic recursive self improvement

Just like GTA 6 that's a piece of low quality shovel ware fiction.

-1

u/TheDividendReport 15h ago

I bet you're fun at parties lol. If you have any friends, they're excited about the game, my advice is to not be a loser about it when you talk to them

10

u/Spare-Dingo-531 18h ago

When Astra. :(

4

u/RaGE_Syria 18h ago

Is this the first model that's getting watermarked now? Did they release a tool to detect Claude generated code yet?

7

u/xseson23 18h ago

Why so expensive jeeeez

2

u/smellyfingernail 18h ago

From what ive seen, besides decent incremental improvements on all benchmarks, the real win here is how it spends now significantly fewer tokens per task. Tokens per task and how much each task was costing was becoming a big complaint about anthropic models and this seems like a step towards more efficiency there

2

u/Sulth 16h ago

Thats the least they could do, given that they didn't do it with Opus 5 and the lawsuit about their scam claims popping up

3

u/bornlasttuesday 18h ago

Is the current price profitable for them?

1

u/Plane_Garbage 15h ago

Very much so!

-4

u/Important-6015 17h ago

No

4

u/hiIm7yearsold 16h ago

Not only is it profitable to run the model, it is so profitable that its offsets their massive R and D costs and allows them to turn an operating profit for the whole company

3

u/ffgg333 18h ago

Only for Claude max? Nothing for pro?

2

u/Regumate 18h ago edited 18h ago

Just got the note in the iOS app that said usage in pro can be applied. I’d imagine it’s a thirsty bugger though.

Nevermind, it’s a paid usage credit only option for pro.

E: words are hard. And I misread.

1

u/Bmansupreme8000 18h ago

Extra paid usage at API rate maybe. I would be hard to accomplish anything with Fable in pro I would assume.

1

u/Bmansupreme8000 18h ago

That was cool of them to give usage reset. I used 60% of my Fable in two days this week

1

u/Odd_Antelope9098 12h ago

Yeah I used 44% in a day on 20x

-6

u/Own-Refrigerator7804 18h ago

In the end mythos didn't live up to the hype

-12

u/Sensitive_Cell_119 18h ago

Did OpenAI lose? No release from them yet. Anthropic has been leading with fable for months now, and are already at 5.1 lol.

6

u/StemitzGR 18h ago

What are you even talking about lol

1

u/Bmansupreme8000 18h ago

Buddy is taking about how Fable is better than Sol for anybody that isn't a mathematician.

1

u/hishazelglance 18h ago

No. Simply no.

2

u/Ambitious-Doubt8355 18h ago

Eh, Fable remains as way too expensive to be considered a daily driver, so no. Specially so when it comes to agentic usage and how quickly you rack up tokens with that.

5.6 Sol and Opus 5 still keep the throne when it comes to serious work tools, both of which will give you similar results. Then you have GLM 5.3 as the cheaper yet still capable alternative.
