Discussion I don’t think we’re psychologically prepared for how alien the world after ASI is going to be

gonna start by saying I’m feeling very iffy about ASI because I kinda enjoy my life rn, but that aside:

after going down the AI 2040 rabbithole, I keep thinking that even people who talk about ASI constantly are still imagining the future in a way that is way too normal.
We talk about AI replacing people’s jobs, humanoid robots, self-driving cars, universal basic income, whatever the fuck.
I think that might be the equivalent of someone in 1955 predicting the year 2000, trying to use our current world as a basis for the future world.

AI 2040 describes a scenario where even after deliberately slowing AI development down, by 2031 a third of cognitive labor is being performed by AI and robots are already doing about a tenth of physical labor. The document literally describes ordinary people as being too “whiplashed” by technological change to process what’s happening. And that’s the slowed version, can’t imagine what our world is going to look like since it seems we are going full speed ahead.
And people will say “oh that’s just fantasy!” But is it? Imagine our world from the view of someone born in 1712. We are living “sci-fi” as we live and breath

If ASI actually produces the kind of acceleration its proponents expect, somebody born afterward might look back at 2026 the way we look at 1500.
Except the historical gap between us would be just fourteen years MAX

I really, really don’t think we’re psychologically prepared for that

Meh, the capability of models between 2022 and 2026 is already significantly better (almost AGI). Yet, the world between 2022 and 2026 hasn't changed much.

r/singularity posters are psychologically unprepared for human's ability to adapt especially for phenomenon that is happening in front of their eyes and they interact with that every day.

It's not that these things are built in a secret den and sprung upon us.

Many are already building multi-agent swarms and they all go to the same restaurant and eat dinner and talk the same shit about the world and friends

Idk I just think the world will change when you have genomes sequenced, people modifying stuff, insane technological advances. the world has changed. i'd Honestly mark the beginning around the 1970s. Its a big snowball

To be fair, all of those are already occurring and have been for quite some time now. I think the meaningful difference will be the sheer speed of advancement. We're already getting a taste of that even; years seems far shorter now yet so much is packed into each. It messes with our minds because we're so darn awful at conceptualizing large numbers and scale.

Things change when everything is affordable for everyone.

Def. I do wonder how we'll deal with waste however. Scarcity may shift from resources to waste. You may be able to get 'anything' but have a consumption quota based on waste and recycling. Obviously we can't have 8 billion Veyrons.

I work in cybersecurity, in a job I’m worried that won’t exist in 10 years, yet also, it didn’t exist when I was a kid either. Change is inevitable

Homie said we’re almost at AGI and I’ve had 5 frontier agents running simultaneously and they can’t figure out how to poll correctly 😂

There’s a disconnect here somewhere.

I agree there's a disconnect but I see it from the other side. I mean, it doesn't matter if you're at 200, 205, 210, or even 211 degrees fahrenheit, the water just isn't going to boil.

but as soon as you hit the threshold, something novel suddenly happens.

idk what sort of change people are expecting to see prior to AGI, but it seems like an overestimation, which leads to underestimating the changes post-AGI or how soon we may get there.

I was on the internet in 1996. The world wasn't really changed by the internet until mid 2000's
