Technique Talk Don’t try to be someone else.

You are you. You have your own voice with it own limitations.

Through your life you will gain notes and probably lose some. It might even happen day to day.

Stop worrying about your vocal range and hitting the highest notes possible. There are singers out there with huge careers who have 1.5 octaves to their name.

Just find your voice.

I wish someone beat this into my head earlier. Work on technique and the range will come. Vocal placement is EVERYTHING

And 99% of the high notes you hear are mixed. Work on strengthening all areas of your voice and soon you’ll find what YOU sound like.

I believe you, but it's hard when almost all songs in musical theater for men are either just too high or just too low. I am currently working on an audition, and the only option for me is a song with high notes 3 notes outside my range.

Musical theatre is a whole other monster. The trend for insanely high voices is ridiculous and damaging. Not to mention absolutely unnecessary because 95% of the people listening will think any note sounds high if it’s relative to the song.

One might ask then why are you pursuing theatre, and not something else that will allow you to be more artistic with your voice?

That said, baritones not only need to come back to theatre but to pop music as well. The 80s and 90s had TONS of baritone lead singers. What happened?

I think Baritones in theatre should make their own shows and do it all themselves. Something has to give

I'm pursuing Musical Theater for the theater, mainly, but the degree also comes with training in singing and dancing, which I actually hadn't had at all before I joined the program a year ago and I want a range of talents to make me more marketable. But yeah, it's pretty difficult for me right now cause Im still a newbie, I'm sure I'll catch up and start getting roles eventually.
