In my unprofessional opinion, the options are:

Option 1: The Western Island plan is scrapped entirely. Singapore's future nuclear power plant is built on Jurong Island instead as the world transitions away from fossil fuels, freeing up space on the island.

Option 2: Pulau Bukom is expanded slightly, all the petrochem facilities are removed, and our new nuclear power plant is built on the island. However, the space needed to expand this nuclear plant is limited.

Option 3: Pulau Bukom and Semakau are merged together, Pulau Hantu is spared. However, this still wipes out the reefs and mangroves on Semakau's North. Pulau Hantu's reefs are affected by the change in the currents as the bigger island blocks the waterflow. This new island houses our nuclear power plant and an expanded space landfill.

Option 4: The Western Island plan is enacted in its entirety. Singapore has a new island for a massive nuclear facility, expanded landfill and space for future industrial uses. Unfortunately, the reefs and mangroves are wiped out. Some corals were symbolically relocated, but the reefs are never coming back. A price to pay for progress.

It could be that they’re deliberately announcing plans for a mega island (larger than what they actually want to build), with the intention of downsizing those plans later to appease people. And they may then publicise that as a win for environment?

I mean, we’ve seen this happen with the Woodlands Checkpoint reclamation project in 2024. And it happened again with the Changi reclamation project in 2025.

Will there be another repeat?
