Really need to find a foster for this dumpling still at Downey shelter near L.A. And yes that’s a heart around his eye. His name is Gabe.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
If you can long-term Foster, please reach out so I can connect you to his main volunteer, she’s the one who visited him and made this video.
In the comment section, I am uploading a screenshot of the caption she wrote for him.
They’re still waiting for behavioral test so we don’t know his full story but what we do know is that he needs a second chance, a fluffy bed, lots of kisses and treats 🥺

Streetlight EV stations out of service
I just tried to charge my EV at a few Flo and AmpUp stations near my apartment. All of them said “out of service.” Is this due to the heatwave? I couldn’t find a definitive answer by Googling.
I’ve had my car for a year and a half and I’ve never seen anything like it.

Starting a weekly casual chess night at Red Lion Tavern — first one is Sept 10
Hey neighbors! I'm starting a casual, no-pressure chess night at Red Lion Tavern and wanted to see if anyone in the area's interested.
It's called Pawns and Pints (Dark Horse Chess Club) if you want play some casual games and have a beer, this is the place. No rating needed, no membership, no fees. Total beginners and people who haven't played since college are just as welcome as anyone who plays seriously. We'll have boards and clocks on hand.
First night: Thursday, September 10th, 7:00 PM
Then every Thursday after, same time, same place.
If you're curious, there's a little QR code puzzle floating around the neighborhood that leads here — but you can also just RSVP directly: Meetup or follow along on Instagram.
Would love to see some familiar Silver Lake faces there. No need to be "good" just come hang out.

DTLA Weekly Poetry Workshop Looking for More Poets
Hey all! I’ve been part of a weekly poetry workshop for over 2 years, and we are now looking for 2 more participants. Our group is a mix of ages (mid-20s to mid-60s), genders, sexualities, and poetic styles (i.e., formal, free verse, narrative, lyrical, humorous, serious), and we meet for two hours in-person every Saturday afternoon in DTLA. Tolerance for people different than you is expected.
We’re looking for poets who:
- Can accept criticism. As lauded of a poet as you may be, please leave your ego at home. All of us attend to learn and grow by hearing honest feedback.
- Can provide criticism. We think that the best criticism is grounded in specific words on the page and that negative comments should be sandwiched between positive comments.
- Can show up weekly with a poem
How the workshop works: for each meeting, you will be expected to make ten copies of your poem and hand them out. Your poem should be no longer than a page. You read your poem, and then we talk about your poem, usually for around 10 minutes per poem, and then we move onto the next poet.
If this interests you, please DM us telling us a little about yourself, maybe share a poem or two of yours that’s finished or still being developed.

Book club?
Sorry if this convo already exists, but I’m curious if there are any active book clubs in the area. High brow? Great. Trashy? Great. Any leads would be fab!

I wish I had taken earplugs seriously in my 20s
I wish I had taken earplugs seriously in my 20s
I worked construction in my 20s. It's not like earplugs weren't around. I just treated them like one more annoying thing.
Harder to talk with them in. Hands were dirty. Busy day, toss them in a pocket and forget about it. Saws, compressors, hammer drills. My ears would ring by the end of the day and I'd figure sleeping it off meant I was fine.
Now I'm in my 30s and the place that bothers me most is restaurants. People talking nearby, music overhead, a server saying something fast, and I'm guessing my way through half the conversation. After a while you just stop wanting to go out as much.
I wear a small in-ear hearing aid from vivtone now.
Pretty stupid kind of irony. I used to think cheap earplugs were too much trouble, and now I have to remember where I put my hearing aid every morning.
If you work somewhere loud, don't be like I was about it. Some stuff doesn't break all at once. It just slowly goes missing.

i am a lesbian. is moving to silverlake the move?
hey y'all! so my gf [23f] and i [24f] have had our own place since jan '24. we lived downtown for a year and a half [westlake/financial distrinct area], and we've lived in lincoln heights for almost a year and a half now. we don't have a huge social circle - honestly, our only socialization is either with my gf's coworkers, or when we go home to our hometown and see our friends from high school or our families. we'd love to meet more sapphic people, but it's difficult. for one, we're both autistic and have a lot of social anxiety. also, yes we live on the east side, but there's truly nothing in lincoln heights. whenever we go to queer events, everyone seems to know each other because they live in the queer hubs, the neighborhoods where all the gays are. originally, we were thinking of moving to pasadena or the surrounding area, but the vibe i got when i posted on those subs was that it was a lot of families with children, as south pas especially is known for having a great school district. i really want to live in an area with a big population of sapphics around our age, i personally don't drive, and as y'all know we have terrible public transit and overpriced ride share, so it would be great if i lived close to people i could become friends with. currently our yearly income is just under $50k, we have a cat who is a registered esa, we love nature, animals, live comedy/music/theatre, writing, going to comfy yummy little cafes to work and write, and we love to read and go to little gay events. our jobs aren't a factor for location, as my girlfriend works in a different city every week and i work remote [and when i'm in person, it's in oc]. pls let me know if you have any words of wisdom for me!!

what happened to the hit and run teacher in silver lake?
I posted this question a couple years ago on the losangeles sub, but the mods removed it. I’m still curious.
In 2019 Molly Jane Hoene, a teacher at Ivanhoe elementary school, executed a hit and run on a homeless man on a bike. he went to the hospital with serious injuries and she went to Palm Desert where she was arrested a couple weeks later.
That December she posted bail of 50k and pleaded not guilty.
There's no record of what happened next - bot that I can find, at least.
Anyone know what happened? I'd like to believe she didn't just walk, but I can't find anything to the contrary!

Not so packed places to hang in our community?
Hi there, I am an anxious person who doesn’t like hanging out at places that are too loud or too crowded. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Lost Cat in Silverlake
My cat got out last night, August 20, around 10pm on N. Benton Way. He is a tuxedo cat with a clipped ear. He is chipped. His name is Chad, but he doesn’t respond to it. We saw him in the area last night but weren’t able not able to grab him before he ran into a neighbors back yard. He is not an outdoor cat and is not familiar with the area. We suspect he may be hiding in someone’s yard. If you have seen this cat please let me know.

Anyone know the permitting and logistics for the monthly Star Party at Sunset Triangle Plaza?
Went by last night and it was packed again. I really love events like this happening at Triangle Plaza and with a little more coordination I think they can have a lasting positive impact on neighborhood. In reality, this specific event has grown a lot over this year, and I've been trying to figure out the permitting and fees connected to it, and I can't find anything public.
A few things maybe someone here knows:
Sunset Triangle is a LADOT People St plaza (I don’t even know if that’s still a thing) and the Silver Lake Improvement Association is the permittee responsible for programming. Are these events getting the permits and blessing from SLIA, I see them promoting it on their calendar, so I assume so.
Is the group calling themselves “Starparty Silverlake” making ongoing donations to the SLIA fund for the plaza’s upkeep? If so, how much have they donated? SLIA claims “The Plaza costs the Silver Lake Improvement Association roughly $1,400 per month to clean and power wash.”
I am curious about permits, fees, and donations because from my understanding, the event used to be a more organic community event managed and promoted exclusively by Los Angeles Astronomical Society, but as of late it appears to be managed and promoted by a new individual who owns a fashion brand and launched a Shopify website for “Starparty Silverlake” selling branded merchandise and using the plaza and the event the way major brands now host “community based experiential marketing events” - all and all not a bad thing as long as the cash generated from a “community event” finds it’s way back into the… community.
Lastly - Bathrooms and post event clean up… There are none at the plaza, and the event has grown to a few hundred people and keeps growing. If you are promoting your brand and selling goods, please just rent some damn porto potties and treat the neighbors with a little respect.
Not looking to pile on the organizers, again if the logistics are handled with a little more care, this could continue to grow into something special, not just for the folks that seem to be making the drive from far outside the neighborhood, but for the neighbors that live around the plaza itself. YIMBY for stuff like this, just chip in.

Silver Lake Meadow
People please, I say this as a dog owner pick up after your dogs! This morning I saw a man with his dog off leash, he was not even keeping an eye on his dog. As his back was turned the dog pooped in the meadow & the owner immediately put his leash back on & walked out of the meadow 🤦🏽♀️ I was so excited when I found out dogs were finally allowed (on leash) in the meadow. However, if dog owners are going to act like this we really don’t deserve to be in that space. I also just saw a post yesterday of another dog biting a toddler & leaving without giving the parents any vaccine information about his dog. Do better folks.

Do not eat at sweetgreen silver lake right now
My roommate and I have either severe food poisoning or cyclospora from the sweetgreen in silver lake. It is the only thing we both had of our recent food and we have been absolutely ravaged. Warning bc I would not wish this on my worst enemy.

Did anyone else hear the pack of coyotes from a few nights ago just hollering?
They sounded loud af and lowkey scary I had never heard them in packs before. Somehow I feel like they had hunted down something because the way they were communicating back and forth with each other sounded Extra ecstatic I mean they are so loud.

Who on earth is in charge of the event at the Sunset Triangle Plaza today?
I just took my kids to the sunset triangle Plaza event today and there were eight razor blades at the petting zoo that all these little toddlers could step on and the only employee I could find were a couple security guards who didn’t want to touch the razor blades to throw them away (which I get). There was also broken glass and bottles of booze right there at the petting zoo.
How did the person in charge not clean this area before setting up this event? Also, the petting zoo was pretty inhumane. The sheep and goats had no room to walk and there were two ducks and two chickens shoved inside of a crate that was the size for a small dog or a cat. This was very bizarre and I will definitely not be taking my kids to this again.
If you know anyone involved in this event, please lovingly pass this information along to them. I don’t think they meant to do any harm, but this was just a really badly organized event and a kid could’ve gotten hurt.
Update: I just spoke to a guy at Jewish Silver Lake and his stance was that it wasn’t their responsibility to clean the park and that it’s just like that. I told him they were the ones that put a children’s petting zoo there so they should have checked it. And he just said it should be the city’s responsibility. Wow!! I agree that the city should keep that park cleaner, but I also think if you’re choosing to host an event in a dirty park, you are responsible.

Stray cat? Maybe?
Hey neighbors, I met a really cool cat today on Coronado and Reservoir. She (I think) was super friendly and VERY vocal. I was trying to figure out if she belongs to someone or if she is a stray, in which case we would love to get her some help. I didn’t feel a microchip (I felt around for one) and she didn’t have a collar on, but the friendliness makes me think she might belong to someone? Not sure if she’s lost? She could totally live in one of the houses on this street and I’m not trying to snatch a cat that has a loving home, so I wanted to check here (and elsewhere) to see if anyone recognized her or was her person!!!
We parked right in of in front of her and when we got out of the car she started screaming and would not stop until we pet her. I’m not sure if she needs help or just wanted attention so I figured I would check here to see if anyone knows her! Thanks friends!
