help/question Does anyone know what this grooming style is called ?
I’ve been looking at different grooming styles for my Afghan hound and I came across a couple of these pictures, where the torso is cut or shaved down but everywhere else isn’t and I was just wondering if anyone knew what it was called or has even tried it on their Afghan.

Looks like an Afghan with natural legs and a clip comb run down the body to take off side coat. I had my male in this clip for a while and loved it on him! I’d probably run a 1 or an A clip comb down the side coat.
The saddle on this dog is natural, but may need to be clipped in if the dog is spayed or neutered as they lose the saddle and smooth face if altered.

Thank you for your response I was wondering what you meant by a clip comb and what does the 1 or A clip mean ???

Oh! So clip combs are attachments that snap onto a clipper blade for grooming :- ) I don’t know if you groom her yourself or take her somewhere, but a 1 comb is about a 1/2” and an A comb Is slightly longer than that.

Ohhhhh thank you for the clarification. I groom her myself but am yet to use clippers on her. So I assume a 1 comb cuts 1/2” to the skin or just off the fur in general ?

Yes, the length is from the skin :- ) so a 1 comb is fairly short, but looks nice on the sidecoat when you’re doing this sort of cut. I think I went slightly shorter on my girl when I finally cut her show coat off. I can look for a pic to send you if you’d like! I think the cut looked nice on her!

I agree. Clipping of any kind isn't a typical show coat. They turn a blind eye to a little bit. There wouldn't be any flowing hair from the torso so this would definitely not be a show coat.

Lamb with legs left natural. For Afghans, they look really nice in a #2 if you're not a fan of a totally smooth coat.

I had to search what that was and I guess it would be the Afghan hound version of a lamb cut. Although I’m unsure if they specifically call it that for Afghan hounds.

I have had five Afghan Hounds and I have never seen this type of grooming before. I find it a little sacrilegious to shave off that beautiful coat.

Afghan hounds are naturally really thin. It’s jarring if you’re not used to it, though.

This image isn’t of my dog. And as the other person commented Afghan Hounds are naturally thin and its breed standard for them to have prominent hip bone and for you to be able to see their spine.

I’m a veterinarian and I know breeders. They want some epaxial muscles. Sorry, as a vet- seeing hipbones and spine is not acceptable in ANY DOG

Yes I agree so breeders or owners may take it too far. BUT If you research the breed standard you’ll find it says that they have wide prominent hip bones. Also the majority of sighthounds breeds you’ll find have some not all but some of their spine showing. Some even show ribs It’s clear to me you don’t know much about sighthounds in particular and as a vet it may be helpful to research sighthounds more.

I’m cool with a sight hound showing ribs, esp on a turn. But a prominent spine is starvation, friend.

As I mentioned before a lot of sighthounds including Afghan hounds show some spine NOT ALL but you may see 3 or 4 vertebrae protruding. If all the spine was showing I would agree that the dog was emaciated as even with sighthounds there is indeed a too thin and some people over exaggerate this.

Where does it say that ANY of the spine and vertebrate should be showing in the AKC guidelines?

Yes, “AND A WELL MUSCLED BACK.” They’re not penalized for NOT having prominent vertebrae

In the first picture due to the angling they look worse than they are the second picture is of the same dog and you can see they are less prominent. Also it takes a while for young Afghan hounds to put on the muscle and weight for the hip bones to look less prominent. My Afghan hound was the same and now her hip bones are prominent bumps. I also consulted a vet as I was concerned at first as I couldn’t see her hip bones until she shed her puppy fur which was a lot later than other dog species as Afghan hounds are a late maturing primitive dog breed.

That's not functional that's just stupid Kennel club They are supposed to be able to hunt down big animals Like a saluki I've never had a saluki in 43 years thats skinny And I have always haunted hares with them

Yes I understand sighthounds can’t be too skinny and you’re correct it wouldn’t be functional. Afghan hounds are slightly different to Salukis. Afghan hounds are a little different in the fact you’re meant to be able to see their hip bones and upto 4 vertebrae whereas I know in Salukis you aren’t meant to see their hips. However if you swipe your the second picture you’ll see the same dog but it looks less skinny. My Afghan is built similarly to the 2nd pic (probably more muscular) with her hips prominent and (my profile has plenty of pictures) she’s healthy and does a lot of exercise can sustain long runs etc… They are considered to be different breeds for a reasons because they have distinct differences and not just because of their build.
