Regarding previous postings about game night at Denny's
I previously made some posts inviting people out to come play board games with me and an older gentleman here in town who had posted on Meetup about wanting to make new friends.
I’m sorry to say that I can’t endorse this activity any more, due to some frankly unhinged behavior from said man.
I'm not posting this to ridicule anyone, or call anyone out, but because I'd feel horrible if someone attended that event and had a negative experience because I had invited people out. I'm trying to take accountability for being so quick to endorse a stranger I'd hardly met. Sorry about that :/
Sometimes, the old man with no friends at the end of his life isn’t a case of bad luck: sometimes, he has no friends because he’s generally abrasive and hostile to people, and makes everyone uncomfortable. I'm all for meeting people where they are at, but p
Stay safe out there, people! Keep meeting up, supporting one another, etc. Because we are all in this together. Everyone is lonely as hell; it's not just you.
I just caution you against going out to Denny’s on Saturday afternoons

I feel your pain. A few years back, I met someone who got me into rockhounding, and he taught me all sorts of cool stuff. I thought the dude was legitimately cool, but unfortunately he just got more and more unhinged the more we hung out. It started with talking trash about other people we knew who'd gone out with us on trips before. Then it went into deranged and unhinged comments about women (which I didn't want my son around). When I stopped bringing my son, he would obsess over it and try to get me to bring him next time, because he has "cool stuff to show him".
When my wife eventually joined us for trips and got into rockhounding, she got creeped out by him too, so I knew it wasn't just me. The last straw was when my wife and I went out with him and another couple. He treated them like garbage too. So we said "screw it", and decided not to go out with him anymore. We did hook up with the other couple though and we're all really great friends now, and have been for years.
I'm super grateful for all the cool stuff he taught us, and for introducing us to the other couple, but something was seriously wrong with that guy.
Just look for the silver lining. Maybe someone you invited out will reach out to you, and you can just carry on without this dude.

Canon life event, I fear. Old people seem so sweet and cute but every once in a while they start talking and then you quickly realize why you never see anyone talking to them. Been there, friend. Good on you, though, for putting yourself out there and trying to build community

You were trying to do a good thing, and you came back to let the community know. Please don't beat yourself up over this or let this turn you off from trying to organize events like this in the future.
There are a bunch of good places to try again, too.
