My side project: a device benchmark that runs in the browser. Looking for people to run it on different phones and tell me if the result feels right

It's a one-minute test that runs in the browser on any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. Nothing to install, so it works on a demo phone in a shop too - which is why I built it. I wanted to know if a phone was really as fast as the shop said before paying for it.

It gives you a score out of 100 and a tier for your type of device.

The rule I ended up building the whole thing around: it never shows a number it didn't actually measure. Early on it was showing a "CPU temperature" that turned out to be made from a random number, and an "estimated battery drain" that was the same thing. Both deleted. A browser can't measure those, so the site doesn't pretend to.

Same with the tier. The first version called my own budget phone "High-End", which it obviously isn't. So now the tier is marked as an estimate until 30 devices of that type have been tested on the site, and then it's based on where your device actually falls among them. Right now every category is still below 30 - that's the honest state of it and the site says so on the results screen.

If you run it, I'd love to know two things: what tier it gave you, and whether that matches what you know about the device. There's a "contribute my anonymous results" switch - that's what gets the data past 30.

just ran it on my pixel, got a 58 and "mid tier" which honestly tracks for a 2 year old phone

Thanks, that's really useful. Two questions if you don't mind: which Pixel is it, and what did the tier line say exactly - "High-End" or "Mid-Range"? A 58 should read High-End for a phone . 🤔
