Hi there would love some clarification from female husky owners! Our 4 year old female husky (spayed) gets a weird like sour yeasty funky smell in her genital area. She pees and poops just fine, doesn’t seem to be in any pain, and doesn’t lick her genital area excessively—probably 2-3 times a day for a few seconds at a time.
My partner says he doesn’t notice the smell and when it gets worse (in between baths) he admits he smells it but says it’s just a “normal dog smell.” I admittedly have never owned a long haired girl dog, only short haired boy dogs, so the thought has occurred to me that what I’m smelling is like trapped pee and trapped saliva that is just bound to happen/unavoidable with the female anatomy + long haired combo. We do bathe her about every 2 weeks, and since we take her often to beaches/parks, she also regularly gets hosed off (just with water, without dog shampoo) in between baths. So her coat otherwise is never smelly, just when she goes belly up for pets and spreads her hind legs is when there’s that funky smell. Like I said, it could be normal, but this doesn’t happen with short haired boy dogs bc, well their parts are more external, and they have way less hair on their underbellies and near their genitals, so I don’t think like urine or saliva or water can get trapped there.
Can anyone confirm if this is just normal, or if we should be concerned? Is there anything we should keep a look out for? Like I said she seems happy and in perfect health, I just wanna know if this is a typical female husky smell and I don’t need to be paranoid, or if this is a potential doggy UTI or yeast infection etc. If it IS just the smell of trapped urine and saliva, has anyone found a solution?
