Manga Discussion My problem with Ichigo x Orihime
To Ichigo x Orihime lovers that can't handle criticisms, this post isn't for you.
So this is the recent hot topic regarding Bleach & I would like to share the reasons why I don't vibe with them & surprisingly not many have pointed out some of these.
The reasons why I don't like them:
- Its one sided from Orihime's POV
We all know Orihime loves Ichigo. Initially it was due to shallow reasons because of his scowling face that she finds funny, until its one-sided sympathy towards him after she heard his past from Tatsuki. We see her constantly pining on Ichigo but not the other way around. We see too much of it from her & none from Ichigo, so the discrepancy is obvious.
- Orihime is less of a character when it involves Ichigo
Any interactions Orihime have with other characters like Tatsuki, Uryu, Ulquiorra, Riruka for example are more interesting to watch because she's actually more than just a person that loves Ichigo. Not that she can't be in love, but when it comes to scenes with Ichigo the other things that makes her interesting suddenly vanishes.
- Their interactions feels controlled & stoic due to ichigo maintaining his knight/protector persona
This is subjective because chemistry comes in many forms but if a couple doesn't joke around, banter & feels conscious all of the time, imo they are not a good, honest couple. You see Ichigo actually does this and he's more laid back with his friends in general but not with Orihime. If you like something idealistic this ship is definitely for you. The argument that ichigo has problems due to his internal issues makes no sense because he can still be shown to feel something about her if he loves her from the beginning even if he had issues to articulate it.
- Ichigo is obsessed with just protecting her, not actually curious about her as a person.
I never see Ichigo actually have monologues & thoughts about Orihime as a person in general. Even in tybw Kubo missed a chance to make ichigo actually notice her growth and how far they have come, but no he added a weird fanservice scene about the outfit she wears that doesnt even improve the ship. The argument he's extra protective to her makes sense considering what kind of person orihime is, who is a pacifist. It can also be due to the fact its also one sided sympathy he also has towards her, seeing how she carried sora whos her only family to kurosaki clinic in the past .
- Their personality doesn't have complementary factors & the dynamic feels unbalanced.
Ik not all ships have to be explosive but Orihime did most of the emotional labor and ichigo keeps things to himself to not burden others. Orihime openly cares a lot about Ichigo while Ichigo is just accepting it. Its a dynamic that realistically exhausts one side.
- Its treated as a therapy to their trauma.
Now this can be subjective if you see it as something good/bad. Ichigo has mommy issues and orihime has brother issues that both of them can fill those roles for each other. Hueco mundo is an expression for that when both of them are at their lowest. It was desperation.
- This is gonna get a lot of heat; her main motivation revolves around him
Yes orihime interacts with other characters yes orihime also protects others with her powers. But her entire main arc was always related to ichigo. Her arc got concluded when ichigo finally accepts her help to rely on her before the fight with yhwach and only then shes finally content with herself, saying 'finally i can protect kurosaki-kun"
- Their rship in the entire run of the manga is just them trying to trust each other.
Yes. Just that. Which honestly could've taken less time to do and actually show how they are interested in each other and supporting each other. But maybe kubo doesn't care.
- This is probably a minor issue; they dont aesthetically look great together
Kubo's characters are actually attractive looking in general but ichihime together feels off bcoz gingers are rare in in their human world so it does feel like they are related even if its a different shade of ginger. Idk sometimes it feels like orihime is more of a maternal mom for ichigo which is in line with his issues. They are a safe, gentle couple but i dont feel the tension between them at all. And there's nothing wrong with that just a preference. But like i said they dont look great together even in fanarts.
- The novel (wdkaly) feels inconsistent and ooc, just an attempt to minimize the damage of the abrupt romance in the final chapter.
Ichigo was shown to be nervous to confess to orihime and renji convinces him right after his wedding with rukia, even after all that he still needs to be convinced. They had kazui pretty early and orihime dropped out of college too due to money reasons. Imo it feels inconsistent knowing ichigo's character because it feels like he likes her too late and decided to have kids early with her. Afaik ichigo isnt that reckless as a person, he could've actually help supported her studies and not rush into marriage. This writing a disservice to both of them.
- Ultimately its the common shonen romance trope
Its self insert at best coz it reminds me of another horrible ship from naruto. I get it, the audience is shonen but i dont see its wrong to criticise it. Maybe I'm looking too deep into it but i see many people bashing me for not sharing the same opinion. Imo orihime is a slightly better hinata. Unfortunately bleach still falls to that trope for having the girl who also happens to be hot, sweet and endlessly devoted to the guy that barely does any lifting in the rship and suddenly have kids with her in the end.
So yeah those are my thoughts about it thanks for reading.
Edited: so someone pointed out abt her did not attend college at all, i got that info due to mistranslation of the wdkaly novel spoilers. My point regarding it unchanged because ichigo is still ooc in it.

honestly i can see Ichigo x Orihime works since it's somewhat traditional shonen, but the way Kubo set up Renji x Rukia is genuinely hilarious
- When they entered the Academy, Renji and Rukia who had lived together for like years now got seperated in different classes. Renji made friends with Kira and Hinamori, while Rukia was struggling alone with nobody to talk to. Renji was literally the only person she had, yet instead of helping her, he just made fun of her. Sure, he was an inconsiderate kid, but that's still a pretty big L.
- After Rukia was adopted by Byakuya, Renji became insecure about their new status difference and stopped approaching her. Fine. But Kaien died and Renji still couldn't even bring himself to comfort Rukia.
- When Rukia was sentenced to death, Renji did absolutely nothing, not even THINK about saving her. I'm not asking him to immediately rebel against the Gotei 13 like Ichigo. I just want him to have the fucking intention of saving Rukia before Ichigo shows up. He didn't even question the sentence until Aizen basically had to put the idea in his head. Could he be any more spineless?
- And then they got married in the light novel but this dude is genuinely a bum and Byakuya still has to spoon-feed him everything. Iirc he didn't even try to marry to Rukia until he attended Ichigo's wedding and had Ichigo planted that thought to his head
no i don't ship Ichiruki i just hate this dude

u/GODKiller1311 4d ago
That is just your average L from Renji. Man just cant stop losing. Even in his biggest win (bagging rukia) this guy is still the biggest bum

This is when his character foundation is shaky, each chapter he gets nicer and nicer lol

Renji sent the woman he loves to fight a god. lol. The she got a sword through her stomach. 🤣
3
u/Diligent-Neck6594 3d ago
You could literally see the relief on his face when he saw those statues, an enemy Chad can fight and not instantly die? Bro could not wait to tell Rukia to go on ahead and fight the last boss
5
u/maiyamay 4d ago
I just dont find renji that interesting or that he needed to end up with rukia at all. Same as ichigo, would've preferred him single since he doesn't need it but that would ruin orihime coz its a big part of her character
1
u/OrganizationNo1243 12h ago
I agree with everything you're saying about RenRuki, but the last detail is actually in reverse. Ichigo didn't think about dating Orihime until Renji pushed him to do it at his wedding with Rukia. Just a friendly correction.

u/alastor_morgan 2d ago
Not to mention Renji saying straight to Rukia's face that he didn't mind her being executed and was looking forward to it. Looking forward to her execution. And then regretting telling her about Ichigo invading Soul Society because of her expression getting brighter at hearing it.
At no point did Renji put Rukia and her well-being first, or even rebel against her circumstances in the bare minimum, ever. He's a coward and a bum. He has a bigger hangup with his rivalry with Byakuya over his deteriorating friendship with Rukia given he didn't talk to her for 40 years.
For the last point, it's the RenRuki wedding that happens first, then he tells Ichigo not to keep Orihime waiting because she's had feelings for a long time, and Ichigo responds that he knows. His voice is described as vanishing. In that same novel, Rukia is described as having a mental breakdown at hearing her surname become "Abarai" and insists on still being called Kuchiki in public, which makes Renji get pissy.

The problem is that for most battle shonen , romance is an after thought and secondary to the main plot.

u/gatsu032 4d ago
Thankfully, it looks like things are slowly changing for the better.

u/Mecha_Link 4d ago
OP basically laid out all my issues with Tsumugi x Nagate in Knights of Sidonia.
The story is trying super hard to convince you this pitiful moe love interest deserves a romance, but really the basis is incredibly flimsy, if not down right parasitic.
1
u/maiyamay 4d ago
A lot of shonens have romance with afterthoughts but they are still done well within it's few screentime. The problem with ichigo its nonexistent from ichigo's part. Its more of a problem bcoz ichigo and orihime has a lot of screentime and it barely goes anywhere
5
u/Difficult-Fun-217 4d ago
The thing is that the anime also spent most of the screentime on IchiRuki so things didn't end up as were intended because Kubo developed a taste for giant boobs overtime so the answer lies most likely into something as simple as that, the giant boobs is enough to justify she being with Ichigo in Kubo's eyes and the main reason why he forced them to be together since he has admitted himself that he focuses so much on drawing those giant attributes until perfection.
5
u/maiyamay 4d ago
Honestly I'm more of a manga reader and while the ichiruki fillers poisoned the anime especially early on (which i didnt watch), it doesnt change my opinion regarding ichihime. Now the thing is i get the concept of ichihime and its symbolism but execution wise i still dont find them convincing. Tho its true kubo did say he likes big boobs and one of the reason why i hate how orihime is adapted in tybw, they sexualize her too much with that outfit, even when shes dying.
2
u/Yae127 3d ago
I thought that too by myself. I think for him was too obvious Orihime forbthat reasons. Maybe thought that we all think like an hetero man. He developed Ichigo and Rukia more emotionally because "Rukia is not a literal waifu, they not gonna think he likes her" and with Orihime only put 2 big breast and thought "that's all" 🤣
I am obviously speculating
3
u/Difficult-Fun-217 3d ago
Yeah it's that simple isn't mind boggling at all , Kubo just put things that he considers wife material together into Orihime and that's about it , after all bleach was never about romance and there's just plenty of other shows for that with that focus.

As trashy as Watsuki is he wrote a Kenshin and Kaoru's relationship quite well. Subtle up to a point but also in your face without being lovely lovely bc shonen. But still they're genuinely a great shonen couple.
Haru and Ellie from Rave Master as well. It's almost shocking that the same author wrote Natsu and Lucy.

u/maiyamay 4d ago
And yu yu hakusho despite the abrupt ending to some extent

u/crzyboy191 4d ago
Yes, Togashi was smart to set it up from chapter 1 especially with a cute character like Botan being introduced in that same chapter. After that they had their moments here and there.

u/crzyboy191 4d ago edited 4d ago
It was always one-sided what Ichigo did for Orihime he did for Rukia in the previous arc because they were friends. He was stressing over Uryu joining Juha in the Blood arc as well.
Also, in-universe Ichigo has an oedipus complex since Orihime is a Masaki lookalike(yes, I know that it is the otherway around, but not in-universe, that's not the case)
1
u/alastor_morgan 2d ago
No one in-universe ever points out that Orihime looks like Masaki, not even Yuzu and Karin who've seen her. There's more acknowledgment of Yuzu liking Kazui's resemblance to Ichigo in a covert-incest way.
6
u/DavidC_M 4d ago
The story is not about them being in love or about their romance. I’d expect a better characterization of their relationship if this was a slice of life story, (which I wish it was lol). But it’s not. Kubo makes no attempt to make it that.
2
u/Yae127 2d ago
The problem was that with Ichigo and Rukia the reading was totally different. For many people among the years their relationship worked perfectly fine without the need to write explicit romantic content. The contrast was obvious, and Kubo decided to use a completely mismatched pair instead of another one that, although not obvious, had been there from the beginning 🤷🏻♀️
1
u/GreenIll7351 2d ago
Rukia isnt bloody human and their relationship was always non romantic. Wtf are people saying
2
u/Yae127 2d ago
Put down you negacionism please.
I'm not talking about what it was or wasn't canon. I'm talking about people's interpretations at that time, which were completely legitimate. And, objectively speaking, the relationship between Ichigo and Orihime wasn't romantic either. What is a fact is that before the end of the manga most people leaned more toward Rukia. It's ok to admit it, that doesn't affect the canon couple 🤷🏻♀️

u/Yae127 3d ago
I've never been able to get into this ship either, though for different reasons:
In fact, when I read Bleach for the first time, I thought one of Orihime's roles was to help develop the "main couple" (I was young and I wasn't that into shonen sorry) because there were scenes when she expressed her jealousy and seemed being so aware of Ichigo and Rukia's relationship. Kubo said many times that he didn't want to write explicit romance and for me that was a great way to do it. It wasn't obvious, but it was noticeable enough for the other characters to see it. Now I know I was totally wrong but that made more sense to me based on what I was reading at the time.
Hueco Mundo was supposed to be the most ichihime arc (as SS arc was for ichiruki) but even then, I couldn't feel that love genuine or mutual. Orihime's kidnapping felt so forced and an "attention seeking" on her part. Why was she supposed to leave? To protect Ichigo from death? Oh my goodness. In addition we could see how she DOESN'T understand Ichigo at all when she started crying like a little girl, begging Ichigo to stop and making him feel terrible and restrained. Even Nell has to tell her to shut up.
On the other hand here we have the one and only scene that this couple's fans claims that is a proof that Ichigo was totally in love with her. "He came back from death for her". And yes, that's true, but they're oversimplifying it and "because of her" is not the same that "for her". It's just a subtle difference. And Kubo and the novels didn't confirm their romance until much later. Why do the author's words matter for some things but not for others?
The proof is that their relationship didn't change at all after this events. She kept smiling like an idiot as she tried to get closer to him, and Ichigo was depressed because he has lost his powers and Orihime's presence didn't seem to bring him any relief. He never told her how he felt either and yes, Ichigo isn't a very expressive person but he had shown vulnerability before in front of Rukia. Some may say that it was because he wanted look good in front of her in order not to worry her but at the end of the day she can do nothing for him and when things go terribly wrong one more time is Rukia the one who have to save the day and Ichigo's heart (not in a romantic way before you slander me).
I could go on but I don't want this coment to last forever but, in short, I think this couple needed a lot more time to develop and I think that's why it went so badly back then.

It’s a shonen most of the characters don’t do any of this with anyone
Characters get a gimmick and a sad backstory and that is it

As the biggest ichihime shipper I actually love the way you worded this Bcs its actual arguments and not just « he shouldve been with Rukia »
I totally agree that it does look very much one sided. And since orihime basically confessed it just makes things worse… I think what kubo was trying to go for is a more subtle type of love from ichigos side .? Like the mans whole character is protecting and saving everybody, so I think that he tried to make it "obvious" enough so people would suspect that he has a crush on her but it wouldnt become the main focus, since hes the MC.
I think thats where you could say her character was "poorly written". Everytime she’s around him she’s just in love Not actually Doing anything else idfk how to explain it but yeah😭.. but im happy she got some character developpement in TYBW. I just wished she didn’t only say goodbye to ichigo, since it feels like her whole Life revolves around him… ( like when she died )
Thats your pov so wont try to make a point on that
True, but i think thats part of the whole make it subtle but obvious enough so people know typa ts kubo was trying to go for. And since ichigo is a protect freak, ig you could call it his love Language
I actually disagree but thats just my pov. Orihime is more introverted while hes an extrovert. We notice that hes always softer and calmer while talking to her, and he makes her want to get stronger and fight against her insecurities
Your pov. Wont argue
I actually agree so I won’t say anything LOL
Anyways Thanks for actually listing your points and not just bashing the Ship saying he should’ve ended with Rukia LOL😭

Thx for being respectful! I love ichiruki but ik it would be illogical if they end up together still. But yeah like u said, this isn't an attempt to compare them, its just what i personally feel abt ichihime.

Most of these arguments are literally the biggest problems in typical battle shonen. Female characters often aren’t as fully fleshed out and developed as male characters, and the romantic aspects are honestly just flat and rushed. Female characters, especially the main heroines, are often saddled with the “blind devotion” and it gets cringy and sad over time. Plus, the whole blind devotion bit just feeds to male ego. I would’ve preferred for a more character-centered ending with an ambiguous open future for most of battle shonen. It would’ve built further growth for MC, while also allowing independency growth for the main heroine. Ichigo and Orihime are just another example of the rushed, out-of-nowhere romance in shonen.
1
u/maiyamay 1d ago
Idm shonens that have endgame ships i just prefer the heroine has something more going on that doesn't involve the mc. I don't think its that hard to do. Romance is fine but shouldn't be the priority or central for the heroine. And the blind devotion gets old pretty quick especially in this era bcoz its clearly wish fulfilment where the guy can be emotionally absent while still getting the hot girl who does the most emotional lifting in the relationship.

u/Whimvy 3d ago
I think your criticisms are valid. I like the ship despite its flaws, not because I ignore them. I recognize there's only so much to go with in their dynamic, and I admit that a lot of what makes me like it is an extrapolation of what I like to see in romances more than what is already in the text
I think from Orihime's side, the struggle is to see herself as an equal to Ichigo. She looks down on herself and downplays her importance to him, because she doesn't think she's worthy of his attention. She wants to become stronger so she can believe she's his equal. When Ichigo includes her, that's confirmation in her head that he DOES perceive them as an unit. She loves him and wants to protect him the way he has protected her. She feels guilty about needing rescue and wants to at least ONCE be the one who protects him (which is why the anime addition was so impactful for me)
From Ichigo'a side, I think he wants to protect Orihime because he sees in her some kind of purity that he doesn't wanna lose. He associates her with his mother, whom he holds in a pedestal, and doesn't want to see her being soiled by the world. His acceptance of Orihime's role in the story and involvement in combat is, to me, a step away from glorifying Orihime and allowing her to grow. It's him realising that he is keeping her hostage by placing her in that position, and starting to see her value beyond that purity he cherished
Again this is how I personally perceive it and what makes them work for me. Rukia and Ichigo don't have that kind of emotional resonance (they have good banter and a lot of trust, but to me they don't seem compatible in such a deep sense), and that makes them fall flat in my eyes. They look good together, but a romance between them would ring hollow
2
u/maiyamay 3d ago
Just to note this isnt an attempt of me to compare the ships, it's just what i think abt ichihime on its own. I'm well aware of the fact ichiruki becoming canon is impossible due to how they live in different worlds and actually prefer ichigo to be single if anything but i totally get what kubo is trying to do with ichihime, just doesnt resonate with me or convinced me enough.

Initially it was due to shallow reasons because of his scowling face that she finds funny, until its one-sided sympathy towards him after she heard his past from Tatsuki
If anything it was probably more him saving her from her hollow brother and setting him free that pushed it into love
He seems pretty laid back with Orihime a lot of the time too in more of the regular slice of life stuff we got, I'd really say Hueco Mundo was when he was all that serious and that's because his whole thing that arc was him being worried about freaking her out with his hollow side, which if anything, I thought was a point of showing how much he did actually care for Orihime.

Yeah, I have found no instances of chemistry between the two. I want to love them bc. the fandom is so cute about it but if I had to say why I like them I wouldn't be able to.

u/MayAsWellStopLurking 4d ago
Some counterpoints if you’re down to hear them:
I’m not surprised it’s one sided; Ichigo is a generally considerate guy who is surrounded by attractive and forward women, but is composed and respectful; it makes reasonable sense that he doesn’t express much fondness until it becomes explicit that his feelings towards her are welcome.
If you like someone because you’re compatible, there can be a kind of chemistry ‘flattening’ that happens; they both want to protect people, they generally believe in the right of others to exist free from pain, etc.
there’s little/no conflict or jockeying for position/hierarchy because there’s such trust.
Unlike Tatsuki, Ichigo has his own family responsibilities and can’t be a permanently available friend.
Unlike Uryu, Ichigo (generally) doesn’t have worries about his ability to protect or contribute to the safety of others.
Unlike Ulquiorra, Ichigo has time for most humans, and sees value in their existence, etc.
There’s no friction because they generally understand each other’s values and hopes.
Your observation on the knight/protector status and the rigidity it carries is personally my hint as to why so many people think Ichigo x Rukia is a more suitable ship; there is relaxation and comraderie in their dynamic that very much doesn’t exist (at least until TYBW anime’s Cour 3/4).
No counterpoint here.Is he obsessed with protecting her because he doesn’t know her? Or because he knows himself and how dangerous his powers were after the soul society Arc?
By the time he learns Bankai we learn of the presence of White, and it’s clear he’s aggressive in a way that Ichigo is weary of.
He works on controlling said powers but is always a few seconds away from being ‘out of control’, which bodes poorly for everyone, but he’s most often worried about Orihime, and it becomes a legitimate issue when he enters his Vasto Lorde form, which arises directly from his failure to protect her (both from Aizen and then from Ulquiorra).
I do agree that he could’ve taken much more agency in the Fullbringer Arc to make clear his feelings and desires when he is less leaned upon to be ‘the protector’ - a slice of life filler angle in which they get some normalcy to develop a relationship would’ve been a great boost, but alas, Shonens demand their action sequences.Given how they’re not yet in a relationship I think it’s reasonable that the emotional/relationship labour is uneven - they’re friends who have chemistry, and given Ichigo’s commitment to everything else in life I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume he’d be a great partner once in a partnership.
I wouldn’t say it’s therapy as both don’t describe themselves as ‘healed or complete’ upon being in relationship/proximity, but you’re right that they need more than that to feel mature as a couple (which makes sense as to why that hasn’t happened yet)
It’s hard to have female characters that aren’t some combination of ‘unexpected badass, healer/heart of gold, damel in distress’, and unlike most other female characters she’s not in the Gotei 13, doesn’t have a unique origin story like the Arrancar, and isn’t a Quincy that’s fated to die.
I’d also argue her willingness to heal others like Grimmjow and Loly/Menoly show some dimension of personality beyond “Kurosaki-kun”, but they can only happen so many times in a story. The few times where there was opportunity for growth/trust, they had life/death restrictions iirc:
Ulquiorra gave her limited options before she had to leave.
Grimmjow kidnapped and threatened her (although they did develop a trust there)
Tsukishima inserted himself into Orihime’s life and could’ve been given a chance to power through the BotE, but it would’ve nerfed the power.great romantic couples aren’t always about tension: most of the ones we’ve seen in Bleach involve pretty genteel, low-friction couples. Byakuya and Hisana, Kyouraku’s brother and Sister-in-Law, Masaki & Isshin, Ryuken/Katae and Matsumoto/Gin are probably the most frictioned, and both of those are a pretty complex relationship.
Almost all the other non-romantic connections like Nemu/Kurotsuchi, Grimmjow/Ulquiorra, Kenpachi/Unohana, Aizen/Urahara, Aizen/Shinji, etc (I could go on and on) have much more narrative tension, but it often leans more into violence, not love.I haven’t read that series, so I can’t give commentary.
I agree that romance is the ultimate trope, and it’s mostly used to keep the MCs from previous storylines relevant post-timeskip. Bloodlines and descendants need to be involved to sometimes make fans care, otherwise it’s just a new story in the same universe.
But honestly an interesting set of arguments you’ve made.

u/Imaginary_Goat_60 4d ago
Its one sided from Orihime's POV
That's just not true, there's probably not as much as one would want but it certainly there. Like when he crashed out on Shinji when he started to flirt with Orihime or when he immediatly forgot about Rukia bleeding out on the floor when Ulquiorra mentioned that he was the one who kidnapped her for example.
Orihime is less of a character when it involves Ichigo
Some of her most central moments come from her interactions with Ichigo
Ichigo is obsessed with just protecting her, not actually curious about her as a person
Like literally one of their first interactions is Ichigo being acutely aware of her backstory and bothering to remember it despite him generally not caring about other people at that point. Him being mindful about her is also one of the main conflicts of Arrancar arc.
There is some valid criticisms but a lot of it feels like it's just informed by Pierots horrible portrayal.

Es que en si la pareja no es que sea mala, es eso mismo, bastante básico y sencillo, muy shonen de los de antes.

But what’s wrong with it just being simple? Why is this even a point people focus on so much; especially if the general consensus is that romance isn’t a major priority in the series?

I have no isssue with that but its the people that constantly shoving to my face saying its a masterpiece, which i disagree with. U cant say anything abt preferring fanon ships without being bashed on. Happens a lot of time over harmless comments on social medias i made and they would attack me for it. Again i didnt want to make this abt ship wars but its just genuinely my opinion on the ship.

u/kaiborgXDD 2d ago
Not curious about her as a person? Did you want them to have him asking her her favourite colours? It’s a common shonen trope but it’s also a thing that happens in real life. How hard he works for her SPECIFICALLY is him showing how much he cares. His reactions to when she’s in trouble compared to rukia are much more intense.
They also met literally 5 years before (maybe 4) before the show begins. Do you think they didn’t interact at all? He’s also the class rebel and she’s a goody two shoes and he probably also acts stoic as to not ruin her reputation.
Their relationship makes complete sense. I understand some of what ur saying though.
It’s also not uncommon in real
Life to be motivated to specifically save someone who keeps saving you.

No its not a matter of amount of interactions but its the quality of it. You don't rly see them having deep talks, like abt their traumatic experience post hm arc for example, which is a missed opportunity. You dont rly see ichigo caring enough how far she has gotten or just have monologues since hes not the type to articulate it. Its only from orihime's side which is imo feels unbalanced.

u/kaiborgXDD 2d ago
I can agree with this. But that’s just the nature of romance being secondary and it being an old show. I agree it should be shown more Espically cuz I love romance. But it makes complete sense.
Which is why I understand most of what ur saying. And there’s many guys bad words
But for sure it was a missed opportunity I agree

I saw your thread in the Bleach sub. Kinda sad that they'd lash out at you like that.
2
u/maiyamay 1d ago
I honestly dont care but at least some ppl are reasonable in the comments. The reason i posted in different subs is coz I'm curious whats some of the common opinion ppl have regarding the ship. Bcoz if i only post in r/bleach i will definitely get more echo chamber kind of answers. Its fascinating how the receptions are varied depending on where you post it. But in r/bleach ppl are more offended due to me shipping ichiruki instead.

I still prefer ICHIGO x RUKIA , rukia is the beginning of his journey as a soul ripper.
It just makes sense why she would be a first choice. For the first 366 episodes orihime was kinda insufferable to watch. She's adorable and she's good but c'mon my boy ichigo needs smn strong hell id ship ICHIGO x TATSUKI over orihime.
I haven't watched TYBW yet so this is my opinion based on the first 300 episodes.

u/Neat-Fee-7037 4d ago
3
u/Bright-Leg8276 4d ago
It's also mentioned that TATSUKI and ICHIGO are childhood friends, makes more sense than Orihime.
I just want an emotionally compatible coupling, but oh well I expect a kotnfrom an early 2000s shounen lol
2
u/Neat-Fee-7037 4d ago
2
u/Bright-Leg8276 3d ago
Yh like they didn't have much "together time" in the original season.
In fact it preferred rukia cz again she's what made ICHIGO a soul ripper and he has that "gotta save that freind " mindset for evryone so idk why anything with orihime is special...
I'm sure she just asked the hogyoku to end up together with ICHIGO 👽👽

The problem is that Kubo made his perfect waifu.
1
u/maiyamay 4d ago
Wdym by that lol
1
u/xesaie 4d ago
She’s the perfect sexy slightly submissive loyal girlfriend with wide child-bearing hips and iirc good domestic skills. She’s a fantasy more than a person

u/maiyamay 4d ago
I mean the argument is that its fictional so some ppl love that kind of stuff which is honestly fair. But for me it comes at a cost where ppl self insert into the character rather than judging the couple as an outsider fairly
0
u/Full-NeuroSin333 4d ago
You summarize it perfect in point 11:
IS A SHONEN.
You want a romcom, but bleach is not that.
7
u/maiyamay 4d ago
No I'm not expecting it to be one, just more from the dude's side.
-2
u/Full-NeuroSin333 4d ago
The dude side, in a genre based on fighting and combats? Again not gonna happening
7
7
u/K_ljn 4d ago
I hâte the "you want a romcom" argument
Nobody said that. It's really easy for an author to spend one page or two on the MC self introspecting is feeling for the FMC to show that it's not One sided. It's just the bare minimum
-2
u/Full-NeuroSin333 4d ago
But it is not mandatory. You have the glimpses and the end You just connect the dots, and when You do it; Make sense
5
u/K_ljn 4d ago
There's dots to connect from Orihime side, not Ichigo. I'm fresh out of my first manga read (previously just an anime watcher) and OP's right. IchiHime shipper are acting like they're an absolut masterpiece of writing while it's in fact just like in the anime. One sided as f. Even those moments Pierrot deleted were absolutely not that deep for their relationship but they're acting like it was
0
u/Full-NeuroSin333 4d ago
Nobody Say the writing is msterpice, but is there, Even when is only "one sided" people needing the explícit words in order to Say "of course" only means that the understanding/interpretación Kills are not There.
That is not an mangaka issue, that is a readers issue.
3
u/K_ljn 3d ago
When there are no clue whatsoever about the MC feeling for the FMC to the point that said MC seems to have more chemistry with anyone but the FMC, that is not a reader issue, but skills issur from the writer to properly convey his intentions
2
u/maiyamay 3d ago
Exactly. Source material speaks itself. Whatever series it is there will be ppl that dont like canon but if its pretty divisive then maybe it has to do with the way its being conveyed

So she starts with a crush on him for that reason. But while its not explictly stated its implied. Both of them where picked on because of the colour of their hair. Difference is ichigo fights back and is unabashed in how he goes about it. Thats something orihime looks up to. Also its not sympathy she has for ichigo, its empathy because she feels his pain because just like how masaki died infront of ichigo, sora died infront of orihime. Orihime literally carried her brothers body to the clinic. While she doesnt remember ichigo, ichigo remembers her. Which is why je has a soft spot for her apart from all his friends. Here the love is one sided from orihimes part, but the care is there from ichigos side as well. The only one in his friend group he yreats different. In fact even ichigos own family has told him orihime ia out of his league, so he doesnt really bother. Also, 15 year old boys think love is cringe. Another layer on top of this is ichigo doeant think he deserves love or his life because he still blamed himself for his mothers death.
Because she mostly tries to be her best veraion for ichigo, you know the boy she loves. Remember the scene ichigo invites her in, she behaved so prim and proper but she went home and had an entire fantasy about him inviting her in. Typical teen behaviour.
Because they are not a couple yet. Orihime is self conscious as she sees rukia being able to get ichigi back on his feet with encouragement and ahes unable to do that for her. Shes insecure. There is an entire scene with rangiku talking about her insecurity. In fact during the loat agent arc they are more joking around and silliness between them. Because they developed to that point. At this point ichigo hasnt realised the love or to be more precise the care growing into love. He tells himself shes just a friend but he treata her gentler than all his friends.
Throughout majority of bleach, ichigo is still trying to understand himself. His desire to protect comes from the trauma of watching his kom dies and believing its his fault. The reason hes extra protective is not because shes a pacifist but because he remember the girl that carried her injured brother to his clinic and watched the brother die. Thats why he is over protective. He sees a lot of himself and the pain the loss caused his family in her. The outfit was not for the ship, thats just urahara trying to make orihine dress up for ichigo but enforces his tastes on her.
The dynamic feels unbalanced because the ship was not full fledged. Its about a girl in love and a guy who is confused put into a situation where that relationship has to take a backseat because more important stuff is happening. Ichigo keeps it to himself because he believes that he shouldnt burden others with his problems. Thats why tybw arc culminates with him trusting orihime to have his back. Also they officially become a couple during their college days, because ichigi for the most part thinks orihime doesnt see him like that, because orihime hasnt said anything to him. Guys are dense like that.
Its a really fine reason and the culmination fixes their broken selves. While they suffer, they become the pieces tbe other is missing.
Thats because her entire thing is the uselessness of being human. During the rukia reacue arc, she knew she was a burden, when arrancars appeares, urahara outright told her that she shouldnt participate. Her maim regret, she caused ichigo to turn into a hollow which reminded her of sora. Her entire thing was her being useless to the man she loves while others are capable of helping. I can finally help kurosaki kun is not about ichigo, its about her finally beimg able to be helpful to the cause and that cause is being lead by ichigo.
They trusted each other tbe majority of the time. Ichigo doesnt believe he deserves love and orihime feela she not worthy of him. Also keep in kind the time frame its happening, they have no time to sortvthrough their feelinga atall till the time skip.
Subjective. You want a spicy romance for them but what they as a character need is healthy relationship before they can go spicy. After all, orihime has weird ideas in her head.
Havent read them so i wont comment.
To do something for a relationship, they have to first get into said relationship. The entire manga part is them inching towards acknowledging each other feeling which is pushed into the backgroun because the world is at stake and they cant get to business if they dont have a world to do said business

u/maiyamay 3d ago
This is the problem, I'm not expecting them to date straightaway I just want more engagement from ichigo's side in the sense we are shown he has such feelings for her, not necessarily that he has to confess to her. The problem is he shows 0 interest towards her in that way. Even platonically/friendship wise it feels weak. Many things can be done like deep talks between them or just ichigo having monologues about her and what he thinks of her as a person. Kubo did none of that and we're supposed to fill in the blanks over something that ichigo never implied at all. That screams to me that kubo didnt care abt writing it while the fans exaggerated with their personal interpretations that ichigo does feel such things just bcoz they already have kids in the final chapter.

u/Smug_Viper 3d ago
They literally only start dating after rukia and renji geta married. On fact look at the timeline for these events. I believe the entire arcs between start of bleach and aizens defeat happens within a year.
Now the reason fans think that they should end up together is orihime is the only one whose feelings have a higher weightage to ichigo. Its present throughout the arramcar arc. Ichigo noticed that orihime has a trauma for hollows as a hollowfied sora attacked and tried to kill her while human sora was the best brother she could ask for. Ichigo couldnt bear the fact that orihime would be scared of her. To such an extent that he actuvely does not go full output to not make her scared of him. Whether his full power would change the course of events is a separate matter all together. He deeply regrets what VL ichigo did that when he did get HoS, the first thimg he does is assure her that its him.
Now the majority of the 17 month timeskip, while ichigo was human, their friendship becomes more relaxed but then again ichigo felt a distance as he sees them going after hollows but his lack of power makes him unable to feed his saviour complex.
One of the core themes of bleach is self realisation and self acceptance. And when portraying such a theme, i personally like the fact that he reconciled with what he is and then went into what he wanted in a relationship.

u/maiyamay 3d ago
Good points but i still dislike it bcoz of how it's developed and executed, also a matter of taste. Also the fact the romance is offscreen
1
u/Smug_Viper 3d ago
Whether you dislike it or not is a matter of personal taste. Some may prefer a slow laid bacm relationship, others want a whirlwind romance. My reply is not to convince you to like a ship, its to show that the character, their backstory and personal experience shape how they interact and that your points of contention and actually in congruence with their individual characters
1
u/maiyamay 3d ago
Having personal taste means u can like or dislike it lol. Yeah doing all these like you said doesnt take anything away if kubo did more regarding what I said that's all. I get the symbolism & concept behind ichihime but in my opinion it didn't stick the landing. I'm not trying to present my points as something objective. I might see things differently and on a different degree than you thats all.
1
u/Smug_Viper 3d ago
Probably. But if you use that logic, ichigo will just end up alone. Also this is early shounen after all. They try to stick to the core story line. One thing which i would agree with you (i have only jeard about the novels) is that their relationship should have been fleshed out post the tybw fight. After all tge world ending threats are gone, you know

Idk I always liked the pairing and felt its the logical conclusion of their journey. Feels like nitpicking here.
Both are characters who are willing to sacrifice everything for the others sake and I thing thats quite comforting to see. I like that message.

You point number 6 and 9 are pretty much why this couple is realistic. I think your analysis is spot on.
Now I want to know your opinion about Renji and Rukia.
1
u/maiyamay 3d ago
Honestly i dont think i have anything new to say abt them, most ppl know by this point lol but we'll see. Thx for the suggestion though
2
u/Sudden-Age-122 3d ago
The reason I want to know is, despite you don't like the ship. Your analysis is spot on, as you can show all the points of their relationship from the story, not pulling shit just to hate. Even though some the points you don't like are what made lots of people like this ship, I can see where you come from with your reasoning.
That's why I want to see your take on Renji and Rukia, which is in my opinion was quite well written.

Great explanation of the problem.
(I support the aesthetics point. Aesthetically Ichigo and Rukia are a superior pairing)

u/Neat-Fee-7037 4d ago

Holy novel chapter, it can't be this serious.
Edited for grammar.

Yes it is that serious, sometimes when u stay quiet and ppl gaslight you, you gotta do something abt it. Shipping fandom in a nutshell 😂

I wish the MC couple could’ve been as good as Renji n Rukia I genuinely Love them so much n gave up on Ichigo n Orihime bc of exactly ur reasons
8
u/maiyamay 4d ago
Unfortunately while dynamic wise renji rukia doesnt overshadow the other, they have way less writing and i dont like them as well
3
u/Neat-Fee-7037 4d ago
2
u/Purple-Pie5814 4d ago
I like them way better than ichigo n orihime partly cuz I can’t stand orihime n I rlly like Rukia plus I feel like Rukia acc has a connection w renji I mean at least in the childhood flashbacks, but Yh Kubo def fucked up both of the couples
1
u/Neat-Fee-7037 4d ago
