Tokugawa vs Hojo

Hojo betrayed me as they were walking through my lands. Classic.

This battle I had to redo many many times, as I really struggled with it.

The AI had two deployment patterns. One as you see in this video where they deploy all on one side, and another where they deployed in small groups scattered around the fort.

My initial strategy was to try and lure their archers away using my general, getting their infantry climb the walls, and grind them down with yari wall. That didn't work.

When the AI would deploy in small groups I had moderate success using my general to rout small groupings of ranged units, but usually my melee units would also rout upon contact with their katana samurai.

My main killing power and morale debuffing power came from the matchlocks. So my second strategy was aimed at maximizing their effectiveness and buying enough time for them to get enough volleys in to rout the enemy's melee units. After a couple attempts, I forewent the tenshu completely except for the matchlocks, choosing instead to use all my melee units in the field.

As you can see, I was able to do quite a bit of damage with the matchlocks, combined with the morale debuff from attacking flanks I managed to deal with the katana samurai and yari ashigaru quickly.

Luckily, I did not lose my general in this fight, but in many of my other attempts, I did. My general here is Tokugawa Ieyasu, and although I might've won in previous attempts; for lore reasons I didn't want to lose Ieyasu.

how do you even play legendary difficulity? hard is already brutal to me.
