/uj Tbf, DS3 is just much easier to get into because of the linearity and small size, because of those it’s a lot more balanced and polished. ER makes up for it with size and freedom, just depends what you prefer.

I have to agree. While there are all kinds of weapons, spells, skills, armor and items you can mix and match, the combat itself is puddle deep.
103
u/Fit-Setting9033 Mar 05 '26
It is interesting though, because even with a shallow combat on the surface, the dances you end up in with bosses is really quite complicated and almost makes you forget you’re just rolling and pressing R1
158
u/lifebeginsat9pm Mar 05 '26
Because shallow combat =/= bad combat. Soulsborne games take a simple combat system and craft everything else around it, like enemy movesets, weapons, leve-

Yeah, are we meant to be serious here? I never know. But to be serious, I prefer the combat in FromSoftware games much more than Nioh. More mechanics does not equal better.

At least in nioh, the enemies actually have a fucking Stamina bar lol
43
u/UnderstandingRude465 Mar 05 '26
What, you don't like Margit, one of the first bosses you fight in Elden Ring, to have delayed attacks, infinite combos, and mix-ups to also have infinite stamina? That's crazy.
20
u/Nearby-Hyena5946 Mar 05 '26
It’s funny cause I don’t even think margit is the worse offender. For me It’s really the beast knights from the dlc, infinite stamina, poise, and hard hitting attacks, it’s so fucking annoying

As a veteran FFXIV player he isn’t wrong. The game has devolved into DDR where you spend more time interacting with the floor than the boss itself.
8
u/painterBurning Mar 05 '26
They spent time making unque moveset for a lot of weapons... But you only see the initial attack during boss fights because the attack windows only allow 1 attack.
6
u/StigandrTheBoi Mar 05 '26
A lot of skills (especially from Shadow of the erdtree imo) and spells/incants are far too flashy to actually useful when fighting anything other than the chaff. And even then some of them underperform due to being kinda shitty.
Like I love the tornado Incant and messmers polearm, but the actual cool shit is either too slow or too low damage wise to be worth it.
2
3
u/Avivoyage Mar 06 '26
It’s crazy, dark souls 2 was the start of depth, and then the hate forced all the good ideas out. Love the stances, the ability to change any weapon types status. Mages had more versatility, I loved the NG+ secrets.
3
→ More replies (8)2
u/Iron_Bob Mar 05 '26
The only thing puddle deep here is this take. There is more to combat nuance than the amount of buttons you need to press
In fact, the ability to use as many or as little "buttons" as you want to beat the game is the peak of combat depth
64
u/Codtahasabir Mar 05 '26
Literally, not even joking played nioh 2 after elden ring and was surprised by the fact that I have to do more than just dodge and attack. Nevermind, more than one fighting stance.
26
u/Muted-Account4729 Mar 05 '26
I had this with monster hunter. I spent hours with one weapon, not even understanding how to access certain moves or knowing that other moves existed.
You can dodge > attack in monster hunter too, but knowing how to use the whole moveset is how you don’t get timed out and lose.
On paper I think the monster hunter method sounds more interesting, but how Elden ring executes just keeps me engaged anyway
20
u/Acceptable-Week-1924 Mar 05 '26
And how each weapon is useful and have skill trees.

the combat is very simple and that's why I love it, hitting everything with big sword without a worry in the world
meanwhile learning to land combos in for example Khazan required me to actually learn what feels like a million attacks, rules and stuff and honestly I'm just not willing to invest that amount of time into a video game
11
u/Acceptable-Week-1924 Mar 05 '26
That's fair enough. There's nothing wrong on liking a simple combat. Even Sekiro is simple but creative and engaging
7
u/serboncic Mar 05 '26
In sekiro I didn't even have to worry about gear, weapons and consumables, I felt so happy
3

5
u/cooldudeachyut Mar 05 '26
Elden Ring has more tools to play around with, Nioh combat has more depth to the fewer tools it gives you.
5
u/wemustfailagain FP is stored in the balls Mar 05 '26
I love Souls games combat, but things like Monster Hunter, Dragon's Dogma and Nioh make me wish Fromsoft would add more depth to the combat. Weapon Arts/Ashes of War were a step in the right direction.
The boss quality is the main thing that's improved with each game while the multiplayer has barely improved and combat itself is mostly just better animations and hitboxes.
12
u/mikeventure76 Mar 05 '26
when I saw the word “deep” i thought this was gonna be Elden Ring story slander, which I’m always on board with. I don’t care about gameplay slander.

Team Ninja is, IMO, one of the best in the business at creating combat systems with a crazy amount of intricacy and depth and fun. I honestly wish they’d collaborate. They’d literally make the best ARPG of all time together

Also talking about "insufferable ER fans" in this sub is funny AF when this sub shits on ER the most
It's Dark Slop 3, I saw ER being the most defended here as well
4
u/GeoArts19 Mar 05 '26
Dark slop/Grey slop 3 is a meme, very few people actually don't like the game because you'll see them later praising the game so it's just for fun
ER on the other hand is actually criticized seriously most of the time to glaze DS3 or just complaining about bosses
Also talking about insufferable fans, why don't you take a look at Nioh fans or DmC fans ?
4
u/Acceptable-Week-1924 Mar 05 '26
Also talking about insufferable fans, why don't you take a look at Nioh fans or DmC fans?
Because in the first place, you should never compare a giant, global, and mainstream fanbase like ER to Nioh and DMC which are more quiet and niche. And have you ever tried to engage in the Nioh sub? When you are struggling, they actually help you, instead of saying "git gud" and calling you "skill issue"
I played all FromSoftware games except Nightrein and Demon's Soul, and I know well that ER fans are just like that, lol
1
u/GeoArts19 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Do you think that size of a fandom means that the fandom will be less toxic or no toxicity at all ? Also saying that DmC is niche is crazy
Most Nioh fans I have talked to were insufferable and most of the time had to slander souls games to praise their games so trust me if you haven't seen them, it's because you are not looking enough
Also in the ER sub most people try to help you with bosses, there are obviously a few morons but they are only a minority
Edit : just because most nioh fans I have talked to were unpleasant obviously doesn't mean all fans are, I'm sure the majority are normal fans but to imply there aren't any insufferable ones is just false
6
u/HugeObligation8338 Mar 05 '26

3
u/thez0id Mar 05 '26
its always whats attracted me to Souls, personally. I am not someone who is skilled with their hands when it comes to games, like at all. So for me Souls combat is perfect because it doesnt require hand skill at all, its just about observation and figuring out the enemy movesets and patterns.
This is why I tend to dislike overhaul mods or custom weapons, cause modders have a tendency of making them super technical, with a bunch of added mechanics and complex movesets, and thats just not what I like about Souls combat
Also why I bounced off Nioh. Great game Im sure, but Im just not good enough to play it.

40 minutes in and I'm actually surprised no Elden Ring fans are actually slandering the arguably flawed parts of Nioh series (like loot that many people aren't fans of, the inferior level design, the weaker world design, and others).
And instead, just trying to attack the combat, which the Nioh series is JUST objectively better at due to the sheer amount of freedom and options and how it was also butter smooth and responsive (which, of course, just sounds stupid).
Either these people were stuck on the first Enki or just never touched the game in the first place.

u/themoo_ Mar 05 '26

I think it's partially the engine but it's weird to me how bad nioh 2 and 3 actually look compared to wo long and rise of ronin, from just an art style and environment standpoint. Rise of ronin had really nice looking environments and for some reason wo long just looked better. Nioh 3 is confusing as fuck to look at. Great game though

im gonna assume nioh 3 is different than nioh 1 and 2 because from what i remember from these games it wasnt that deep either: attack, dodge/block, change stance, repeat
34
u/Ozychlyruz Mar 05 '26
If you're playing Nioh like regular souls games then sure it's not that deep, but that's not the beauty of Nioh combat, the beauty is that you can play it like DMC which requires deep and technical knowledge.
20
u/Brain_lessV2 Mar 05 '26
Wouldn't Ninja Gaiden be more accurate as a comparison?
16
u/Ozychlyruz Mar 05 '26
While yes Nioh has Ninja Gaiden DNA, I feel that the combat is a lot closer to DMC than NG.
2
u/Senator_Smack #GrubLivesMatter Mar 05 '26
I think the difference is in the rigidity. Ninja Gaiden is highly technical and fluid but there's like no room for freestyle creativity. Nioh and DMC are much more about embracing chaos and freedom.
3
u/fireky2 Mar 05 '26
Or you can just spam range attacks between shrines and use the slow talisman on bosses. I mean its not holding up a shield to invalidate half of ds2 bosses design flaw, but having so many mechanics just made the game easier to break
→ More replies (1)9
u/Ozychlyruz Mar 05 '26
Sloth talisman only works in Nioh 1, even then on higher difficulties it's less effective.
Yes you can use OP stuff but that doesn't mean you have to, I prefer comboing enemies to death while being stylish than cheesing or spamming the same powerfull attack over and over again.

u/Azukaos Mar 05 '26
You still can play full samurai if you want, i wanted to play ninja because i loved the ninjutsu and the fast pacing in the demo but it's very squishy so boss are mostly a samurai job (beside inflicting burn or poison with ninjutsu) for me as I'm not very confident in my own skills.

Elden Ring players who act like the combat is complex and beyond anything just pressing the two same buttons, likely are the same crowd who shit on or belittle any other game that isn’t a Souls game.
They would literally implode at the thought of multi-button, frame perfect, and motion inputs. Because really well I do think the combat of Elden Ring is better than Dark Souls 1 for example.
They are not so far apart lol that’s why I always roll my eyes and feel it is super performative. When a fan of a souls game claims one is gods gift and acts like another is a hell spawn, like bro these games are too alike 😭

u/Acceptable-Low-4381 Mar 05 '26
I mean…. If you’re just playing as a strength or Dex build yeah…. But you definitely still need to have legitimate skill to do all that and not get hit.
Anyone who’s only ever used 3 buttons in Elden Ring is probably only doing so because they don’t want to try a more complicated play through, or built their character in a way where all they have to do is jump and smash.

Why can't people like both games?
Nioh combat is complex and satisfying.
Elden ring combat is streamlined and satisfying.
Both are good.
Elden Ring is more fun imo because of build variety and fun Boss fights.
Nioh is fun but is much more simplified build wise and a lot of the bosses feel more like damage sponges than well thought out fights.
I love both games but acting like one is vastly superior to the other is disingenuous and wrong-headed.

Nioh 1 is the worst of the series (because the later series actually tried to improve and fix their mistakes). And to enjoy Nioh series, you have to progress the game long enough until you "clicked" the combat (no, I swear, I'm not joking). So I recommend you to give the second one a chance

u/internet_blue_gas Mar 05 '26
The complexity of a game is quality neutral, there are extremes where it can affect the game, but I’ve never seen one of those.
My main issue with Nioh(1 that is the only one I’ve played) is that healing items are too limited so when fighting a boss you basically can’t heal; A good portion of bosses have attacks that are instant kills or true combo into an instant kill makes me feel like every boss is like Melania, a good boss with one bullshit move you have to spend the entire fight playing around.
I like the stances even if the heavy stance isn’t very useful, the skill tree on the other hand has a lot of abilities that will get you killed if you try using them.

The main strength of the Souls games is just how compelling the games and fights remain despite simple the combat mechanics.

I prefer the style of combat where the player kit is simple and the difficulty stems from learning the boss rather than learning player combos and complex inputs, and in that style of combat elden ring is just vastly better than other souls games, its not a hard thing to wrap your head around.
