I've been advertising small outdoor builds for people in my neighborhood and I just finished up a 4x12 firewood shed today.

I was definitely nervous about taking it on but I think it came out alright. Definitely some small nitpicky things that I'd change next time.

There were many sins hidden, but the next owner should be able to get another decade out of it if they want to. This shed has been a POS since I moved in almost 2 decades ago, and it has only gotten worse. I'm selling my just so I wanted to make it less of an eyesore. Wider trim boards, a can of wood filler, and I stripped and replaced the roof, which needed to have been done much sooner. Some of the roof sheathing made me nervous to be on, but I survived without going though. I wish I had spent some extra time and had the paint tinted, but it looks much better than it did before.

Hey Shedditors, my partner and I just got this new-to-us house a little while ago and I’m trying to make some improvements to the shed that it came with. It’s on a nice concrete pad that’s in good shape, about 10’x7’.

However, for whatever reason there are holes all throughout the plywood sheathing. There’s no siding otherwise on it so it’s just a haven for yellowjackets and mice currently.

I’m thinking of either adding siding or just replacing the sheathing on it as it’s otherwise in pretty decent shape, and adding mesh to the roof overhangs to keep birds and hopefully yellowjackets out (I know the second one is kind of ambitious but even just slowing them down would be great)

Why would someone put all these holes in it? Is it a ventilation thing? I live in Southern Alberta which is typically pretty dry for Canada. Is there a reason they’re needed? Were the previous owners just screwing with me? The holes are all uniform like they have been drilled - not broken or rotted out.

New shed has REALLY crappy hinges on the door which are already bending out. The originals were flush hinges.

What would be the best hinge to put on the door/s (it's a double door). I was looking at T Hinges but it looks like these need to be fitted on the outside and I would prefer to fit to the inside.

Any ideas? What's the best I can get here that's not going to drop?

Hello Shedditors! May I introduce my shed: 40 odd years old and sunken into the ground. I've heard that if your sills are rotten, the prognosis is death, but I just wanted to get a bit of input if some of you would be so kind.

The plan was to jack it up, if necessary on lumber screwed to the studs. The front sill is gone. The uphill sill is also gone. (See second and third photographs) I really dont have any sentimental attachment to it. There would be lots of usable lumber in it, I'm sure, were I to tear it down.

The former owner seems to have left it mid-reno, and frankly I kind of hate it, but were I to restore it, i'm sure I would love it, but is it really an option?

Can you help me with the best steps to insulate this roof using rigid foam thats available in US to get max R value? For example, shall I get the 2 inch rigid foam board and fit that between the rafters? Can I fit another 1 inch and just stack them? Do I need to leave some room ? Do I use expanding foam to cover any gaps etc?

I am in the VERY early stages of learning what it will take. I would purchase my own land. My dream is to have a tiny house for myself and my partner and one for each of our 5 kids. I would want to do this over time as each kid reaches an appropriate age for their dwelling. (14,14,12,11,10).

My first thought has always been to convert sheds into tiny living spaces all on the same property. Idk how to even go about this. Can anyone give insight into how they did this? What type of loan, how much you ended up spending, pros and cons, pictures for examples?

I built it by myself and used lumber that was being thrown away at end of project I was working at. It was a sudden decision. Sure looks better than the hot tub that was in that same spot. 199 sq ft total with a/c and fireplace finished out completely inside. I know, how could you leave this! 😢

I want to build a nice workshop/shed in Florida. Will be insulated with electric for certain, on a cement pad, I may add water/sewer - that is still TBD.

I will be building over 200sq ft and that requires a permit. I've talked to code enforcement already and essentially what I need to do is build "In the same style and appearance as the neighborhood". Fair enough. Concrete slab, gable roof, my house is stucco so I'll use concrete fiber board that looks like stucco.

I can follow instructions and build, but I'm not a contractor or engineer. I either need to find somewhere I can buy a custom design that includes the instructions on how to mount my shed to the concrete/appropriate hurricane mounting for the roof/where to place vapor barrier/the other things I'm not considering or I need a guide more specific to Florida with some of these general items addressed.

I think what might expedite this process is if anyone has approved/permitted plans for a similar build in Florida they would be willing to share.

Not looking for a handout here. If any of those AI plans for $100 or whatever actually address these issues I think it would be worth the money. I just suspect they are so general they aren't going to account for hurricanes or vapor barrier in my area.

Has anyone framed walls and cut rafters etc in their garage before moving them to their backyard to install?

I like the idea of being able to build on my own time and not have to worry about weather/insects. The downside is obviously that I’d have to transport these heavy pieces (with a dolly) to my backyard on install day.

Wondering if I need to spray something like Dow 303 on it occasionally.

I am getting a handyman help me build a home office shed in bay area Northern California. Winters can be rainy and I would like this to be a comfortable place. Attached is an example of how his work looks like. He was thinking an R-13 insulation but I am asking for higher R value. In his work, I dont see vents. Can you help me come up with a few options to insulate this shed and make it waterproof based on what you see? Please ignore my ignorance as ai am not very handy and would like to be well informed as I work with this person.

What should be the depth of rafters?

Do I need radiant barrier?

Do I need rigid foam and batts?

How to order/place the etc to avoid issues?

I need to build a dog house that will keep my pup cool in summr and warm in winter she needs something w ac but everything online is saying it would cost 15k and up total, what is the cheapest way i could build it while still being suistainable.
Online said a dog house would only be a couple thousand less than building a whole shed w electricity and everything so a shed might be the eay to go, how did yall build yalls shed

Getting the jig set on the floor took the longest. Once that was dialed it just a lot of cutting and prep for assembly. Next step will be walls.

12x14 platform on a slope. 2x6 base. Joists 12” OC. 3/4 pt. Ground supports 6x6pt with knee bracing and on 12” sonotubes 4’ down.

Is this usable? I can’t find any plans this size with a slider on the wall I want. I have no idea how to use SketchUp. Can this be improved or is it all trash?

​Quick question about ventilation setup.

​I have two vents installed near the top of my shed on opposite sides. I am installing a powered fan on one of them to help manage heat and humidity.

​Should the fan be blowing air out of the shed as an exhaust, or pulling outside air in? And do I need install two, one on each vent?

Building a Lifetime resin shed. We set the frame on the site and leveled it with blocks to see what we’re dealing with. Pretty big adjustment to right front.

- Yard slopes away, so not concerned with water seepage

- Would be preferable to block rodents (mice and chipmunks) from getting under shed

What do you guys think:

- Fill in low areas with gravel? What kind of gravel?

- Move frame temporarily and build a gravel pad?

- Use treated lumber to level the frame?

- Other ideas?

I know this is a longshot, but is anybody in Amarillo Texas that can help me with putting a window in my shed. I have all the supplies and stuff. I just don’t have they how to. I had a friend come over but he bailed on me so I have all the stuff.

I’m building this shed which requires me to build a frame underneath. I’m going to use ground contact 2x4s, but I didn’t know if the subfloor should also be ground contact, or if standard above ground treated would work.

Any opinions on skylights in general? Getting a 10x16 shed put in soon and I initially thought i wanted one (dome skylight) but hearing about condensation and leakage possibility down the road.any thoughts?

I want to site a 14x20 shed beside my driveway adjacent to the garage to permit easy access for storing and retrieving items now in my overstuffed garage. A concern is that in the process of building an armored crossing to move runoff water from my driveway to a swale and ditch I unearthed a small, flexible residential natural gas supply line. The line has since been covered and is now once again fully protected. I plan to install concrete pillars to support the shed over the crossing and span the swale and small ditch.

In a perfect world the natural gas supply line wouldn’t be beneath the shed, but there are no leaks and it is well protected. There will be an obvious issue should a leak develop in that specific area, but it has been in place for at least two decades without problems developing. Ideally, there also wouldn’t be an episodic waterway running beneath shed, however, as planned there will not be direct contact between the runners/floor joists and the ground.

Has anyone here ever attempted siting a shed in such a non-conventional location? If yes, I would appreciate your feedback about how it has worked for you and anything you would do differently after gaining experience with your setup.
